Obituary courtesy of Country Aircheck:

Country Radio Hall of Famer and “Mayor of Music Row” Charlie Monk passed away today (12/19). He was 84. Born Oct. 29, 1938 in Geneva, AL, Monk launched his radio career in 1956 sweeping floors at WGEA-AM/Geneva. He quickly segued to an on-air position before taking jobs in multiple markets across the state, including Troy, Mobile and Tuscaloosa. His passion for country music led Monk to Nashville in the late ’60s, where he served as PD for WMTS-AM/Nashville before eventually establishing a music publishing business.

One of the original founders of Country Radio Seminar (CRS) in 1969, Monk is the only person to have attended every CRS from its formation through CRS 2022, which was his 53rd appearance. For many years, he served as emcee for the New Faces dinner and showcase, opening the night with his famous “Let Us Pray” roasts. He also served on the CRS Board from the organization’s inception. Monk was active in multiple facets of the industry. He penned songs recorded by Eddy Arnold, Jerry Reed, Charley Pride, Jimmy Dean and others and, as a publisher, helped foster the careers of Randy Travis and Kenny Chesney. Monk later moved his on-air talents to host SiriusXM’s CMA Broadcast Award-nominated The Mayor Of Music Row.

Honored with the CRS President’s Award in 2007, Monk was quick with a joke. “They’re not sure I’ll be around next year,” he said of the motivation behind the honor. “They think I’m starting to look a little paisley.” Monk was inducted into the Country Radio Hall of Fame in 2019 (CAT 2/13/19); read Monk’s story in his own words in Country Aircheck‘s coverage of his induction here. In 2021, Monk received the Joe Talbot Award from the CMA and, earlier this year, was inducted into the University of Alabama College of Communication & Information Sciences Hall of Fame. Complete obituary here; arrangements are pending.

Here is what some of his peers are saying today about his loss.

It always pains us to receive press releases like this.

Country singer and actor Mickey Gilley, known for launching the Urban Cowboy movement in Country music and hit songs including “Stand By Me,” “Room Full of Roses” and “Lonely Nights,” died Saturday in Branson, Missouri.

Gilley was 86 and had just come off of the road, his favorite place, having played ten shows in April. He passed peacefully with his family and close friends by his side.

Gilley, a native of Natchez, Mississippi, influenced generations of country singers for decades with his signature, haunting combination of Louisiana rhythm and blues and country-pop crossover melodies. He grew up with his two famous cousins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart, surrounded by the influence of music and earned 39 Top 10 hits and 17 No. 1 songs throughout his career.

In 1971, Gilley opened his world-famous honky-tonk Gilley’s in Pasadena, Texas, which sparked a chain of the famous nightclubs.

The son of Arthur Fillmore Gilley and Irene (Lewis) Gilley, Gilley learned how to play piano from Lewis and dabbled in boogie-woogie and gospel music early in his career before finding his professional footing in the ’70s with “Room Full of Roses.” Hits “Chains of Love,” “Honky Tonk Memories,” “She’s Pulling Me Back Again,” and “Here Comes the Hurt Again” followed as his honky-tonk gave way to the more progressive countrypolitan.

In 1980, Gilley splashed into pop culture when he appeared in the smash hit movie “Urban Cowboy” alongside John Travolta, Debra Winger and Johnny Lee. Gilley’s served as the backdrop for the film, which helped launch his acting career and put his music career on a whole new level. Gilley went on to star in popular television series including “Murder She Wrote,” “The Fall Guy,” “Fantasy Island” and “Dukes of Hazzard.”

Gilley was widely recognized for his work in music and movies, earning numerous accolades, including six Academy of Country Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011. He was one of only a handful of artists to receive the Academy of Country Music’s Triple Crown Awards.

Gilley was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian. He is survived by his wife Cindy Loeb Gilley, his children Kathy, Michael, Gregory and Keith Ray, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and his cousins Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart.

The family respectfully requests privacy at this time.

Bill Anderson – I heard Mickey Gilley’s hit version of my song, ‘City Lights,’ on the radio Friday, and marveled for the ump-teenth time at what an incredible record it was. I never dreamed that one day later I would be mourning his passing. He was a great artist, a good friend, and like the rest of our country community, I sure will miss him.

We were honored to share years of friendship (and a little competition) with him. We will continue to honor Mickey Gilley in our Wall of Fame for years to come. Our thoughts are with his family during this time.

Bobby Bare – Been a friend of Gilley’s for 50 years. He was one of the good ones – I loved playing Gilley’s in Texas, we played it many, many times. The fact is, that’s where I first met Mickey and Johnny Lee and ol’ Sherwood Cryer. I’m sure going to miss my old friend.

Over 30 hits and Mickey was still performing just last month in Laughlin. I especially loved the records that he and Jim Ed Norman made. While working in Branson in 2018 and 2019, I got to hang with Mickey a couple of times and it was quite entertaining backstage before the show and during intermission. He was so much fun and so full of life and still owned the stage.

Charlie Daniels Jr. – Mom and I are saddened to hear about the passing of @MickeyGilley1.
Dallas Wayne – With the Urban Cowboy movement of the 1970s, Mickey Gilley introduced his unique piano playing style to a whole new generation. He was one of the greatest entertainers I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing, as well as a warm and wonderful friend. Our deepest condolences go to his wife Cindy, cousins Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmy Swaggart, and Linda Gail Lewis, his family, and millions of fans around the world. He will be greatly missed

Damon Whiteside (CEO of ACM) – The Academy is saddened to lose one of our greats today. His impact on Country Music, film, and television, can never be understated and will never be forgotten. We’ll always keep this urban cowboy in our hearts, and we send our deepest sympathies to his family and fans around the world.

David Frizzell – Mickey Gilley and I have been friends since his ‘Urban Cowboy’ and my ‘Any Which Way You Can’ movie days. We had performed a lot around the country together and especially at his Gilley’s Club in Texas. We had quite a time! Gonna miss you!

Eddie Bayers – Mickey was the first No. one record I played on and I had 10 consecutive overall with him. He was a gift to not only country music, but the world of music. One cannot think of the motion picture ‘Urban Cowboy’ without thinking of Mickey Gilley.

Gene Watson – I’m so very sorry to learn that our good friend and incredible legend in country music, Mickey Gilley has passed.
Grand Ole Opry – During tonight’s Opry show, we took a moment to recognize Mickey Gilley and his contributions to country music. You’ll be missed, Mickey.

He was a true stylist! Seeing him live in concert as a kid, and the way he owned the stage…helped me realize that being an entertainer was often as important as the music itself. My deepest sympathies go out to his family. He will forever be a legend and rightfully so!

Irving Azoff – Working with Mickey Gilley was undoubtedly one of the top highlights of bringing the Urban Cowboy story to both record and film audiences. Mickey was the real deal and a key component of the ‘Urban Cowboy’ story. He will be missed greatly.

J.D. Shelburne – I am saddened to hear the passing of the legendary Mickey Gilley. One of the biggest names in the business. I was honored to perform in his famous nightclub in Vegas many times. Prayers to his family.

J.P. Pennington (Exile) – Far too much of this kind of news lately. So sorry to hear of another music icon gone. He was an incredible person and an amazing artist. RIP Mickey.

Janie Fricke – I enjoyed working on Mickey Gilley records as a backup singer, with the great Eddie Kilroy as producer. One of the first big concerts I played was Gilleys in Pasadena, TX and was amazed at the bucking bull machine! Mickey’s image and memory will be forever.

I treasure all the times we got to work together and there were never enough. He and Johnny Lee brought a new dimension to country music with the urban Cowboy trend and brought new fans to the genre. Whether it was a boogie or a ballad, Mickey made it his own, no matter how many times it had been done before, and it would become my favorite version. He was loved and respected and he will be so greatly missed.

Jerry Lee Lewis – I am so very saddened by the death of my cousin Mickey Gilley. He and Jimmy Swaggert are like brothers to me. We are asking for prayers for his wife, Cindy and his entire family. I’m sad and praying. I loved him very much.

Jim Ed Norman – Mickey Gilley was more than just a legend to me. I loved him like a brother. We enjoyed a closeness that came from working towards goals that many suggested were unachievable. He was a kind, thoughtful fun-loving friend and partner through the process of making music and his generosity of spirit pulled the best from everyone with whom he worked. I’m overcome with a sadness that only the memory of his mischievous smile, beautiful soul and our special time together can erase.

Joe Bonsall (Oak Ridge Boys) – Once again we have lost another country music star and a long-time friend. Rest In Peace Mickey Gilley until we all sing again. In the meantime, we will miss you brother.

Joey Canyon – In 1980, Mickey Gilley and his country nightclub Gilley’s, was the scene for the movie ‘Urban Cowboy’, and along with his great music, was instrumental in introducing country music to a global audience. What a legacy!

Johnny Lee – My heart will forever break over the loss of my dear friend Mickey Gilley. He believed in me when no one else did. Losing Gilley feels like a bad dream and sadly it’s not. He loved his fans more than anything in the world and taught me everything I needed to know about country music. He always told me if I thought it was going to rain, to always grab my umbrella. My prayers are with Cindy during this very difficult time.

Kent Blazy – Mickey Gilley, a true legend and star. Cousin to Jerry Lee Lewis, (who taught him to play piano) and Jimmy Swaggart! He was versed in gospel, the blues, country and pop and he wove it all into his own unique sound. His bar “Gilleys” basically started the Urban Cowboy movement.I miss the piano player/singers that were stars. I would like to see that come back. Thanks for the music Mickey.

Lacy J. Dalton – Mickey and I did so many shows together. I feel Mickey and Johnny are like brothers from another mother and this loss hits hard and he will be sorely missed. I truly respect him as a musician and he was a great entertainer. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Lane Brody – Gilley’s love of music and people was beautiful. Gifted far beyond talent, he was genuine, loyal, fearless and charming . He warmly welcomed artists and fans from across the globe and all walks of life into his world. A country music ambassador extraordinaire! May his memory be eternal.

Larry Gatlin – My old friend Mickey Gilley was one of a kind..a great entertainer and a great guy. RIP old friend

Linda Davis – When I learned of the passing of Gilley my heart just sank! What a trailblazer he was his entire career!! Being a fellow Texan of course, his music blared on my radio and record player and 8 track player!! And then, Urban Cowboy, Gilley’s in Pasadena, he is a member of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame – I am just getting started with all of his accolades. He used to sit and listen to me sing at the piano bar where I played for several years at the Sheraton Music City. He was an encourager to me and he was my friend. RIP Gilley.

Lisa Matassa – My heart aches hearing of the passing of the incomparable Mickey Gilley. I was blessed to have known him and to have had the honor to record a song with him. He was an amazing person and someone I will truly miss. Rest In Peace my dear friend until we meet again in paradise.

Makenzie Phipps – I am saddened to hear of the passing of yet another country legend, Mr. Mickey Gilley. I was first exposed to Mr. Gilley and his music when I watched “Urban Cowboy”. His rendition of “Stand By Me” is a true country classic. From hits such as “Don’t The Girls All Get Prettier At Closing Time” to “Room Full of Roses” in addition to his world-famous Gilley’s Bar, Mr. Gilley will go down in history as one of the all-time greats.

Mary Sarah – I am beyond sad to hear the news of Mickey Gilley. Growing up in Texas, the name was all too well known to me. So many #1 songs that will never be forgotten and neither will he. Rest In Peace Mickey. We will see you again.

Paige King Johnson – It breaks my heart to hear of Mickey’s passing! He has been a staple in music for many years & his spirit will truly be missed.

Randall King – Aw man, RIP to the legend

Reverend Jimmy Swaggart – With the passing of Mickey, the music world has lost a giant. I don’t think there is any argument about that. Mickey, Jerry Lee and myself were raised together. We learned to play piano together. I remember the day that he came to me and said, ‘Jimmy, I want to learn to play the piano.’ We were only about 10 years old. He had already taught himself to play guitar and had done very well. I remember showing him several chords on the piano, and he took it from there. I might quickly say that he took it very well – as everyone has seen for themselves for over a half-century. But alongside all of his achievements in music, the thing that thrilled me the most was that some time ago he called me and said, ‘Jimmy, I’ve made things right with the Lord.’ I saw an immediate change in his life in these last few days and that is the thing that’s far more important to me. The music world will miss him. And the work of God will miss him as well. I will miss him. Our prayers are with his family and friends during this time.

Rhonda Vincent – Another great loss in Country Music – so sad to hear of the passing of Mickey Gilley. Our paths crossed a few times being in Branson; and Gene Watson and I did his TV show. I loved the day I was fortunate to hang out backstage with Johnny Lee & Mickey Gilley during one of their shows. Great stories and great memories. May He Rest In Peace.

Ricky Skaggs – Mickey Gilley was a great artist, and he was always nice to me. I won’t forget you Mickey. Rest in peace.

Shane Owens – Mickey Gilley is one of the most famous country singers of all time. Not only was he a great singer he owned the biggest nightclub in Texas at one time. Truly a country Icon and cousin to the one and only Jerry Lee Lewis. RIP to a legend and truly one of a kind!

Steve Azar – Mississippi lost a great one today What a legacy he left us on all! Blessings to his family! RIP

T. Graham Brown – We just lost a great human being. Mickey Gilley has been honky-tonkin’ since the ’50s. ‘Urban Cowboy’ secured him a spot in America’s consciousness and he’s been in our minds ever since. He lived a full life and left us with a great catalog of hits. One of the things that I’m most proud of is that over the years we have become close. The times we spent together doing shows, cruises, or just talking were a gift. Sheila and I will miss him a lot. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.

T.G. Sheppard – Just when I think my heart can’t take anymore loss, I get the news that my dear close friend Mickey Gilley has passed. He truly altered the course of country music. I was fortunate to have gotten to see one of his last concerts 3 weeks ago. Prayers for Cindy, family and his fans.

Tess Frizzell – Mickey Gilley and Conway Twitty announced my birth on the ACM awards and showed my grandmother, Dottie West the first video footage of me when I was born. Now, all three – him, Conway and my grandmother have left this earth and sing in heaven. Mom and uncle David played Gilley’s club in Texas so much when I was a kid. What an era. Sad to see him go.

The Oak Ridge Boys – Just heard that MICKEY GILLEY has just passed away … wow … another singing friend has gone home … Bye Mickey … until the day

Tim Atwood – Every loss to our country music community is a great loss, but this one hits close to home for me. It breaks my heart! Mickey Gilley was one of my musical heroes. No one could play a honky tonk piano better than Gilley, and no one had a better time on stage than Gilley. After his accident took away his ability to play, he often called me to play piano for him when he was in Nashville. He said I sounded more like Mickey Gilley than he did. That’s one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever had or will ever have. Not long ago, Jeannie Seely and I opened for Mickey at a festival in Illinois. He invited me on his bus where we visited for over an hour. I don’t know if he even realized how special that time was for me. My prayers go out to Cindy and the rest of his family and friends. Tonight I’m playing a show in Kentucky, and you can bet I’ll be singing “The Girls All Get Prettier At Closing Time” in honor of Mickey Gilley and the honky tonk sound he loved.

Zachariah Malachi – I’m saddened to hear of the passing of Mickey Gilley. Few could hold a candle to his genuine honky tonk sound. When you hold these icons so high on a musical pedestal, we forget that they are mortal just like the rest of us. Prayers for all the fans and of course, his family. Gilley’s forever!

Check out our interview with 17-year old Kentuckian Dreyden Gordon!

What project(s) are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on my new single, “Soldier’s Story”

What inspired you to pursue a career in music and when did you know?

From a very early age I knew I wanted to pursue music. When I was two years old I began dancing on stage and continued doing that until around the age of seven when I began singing on stage. Legendary bluegrass pioneer Melvin Goins, is probably the main reason why I play music today. He was the first person to pull me on stage when I was in fact two. Later I began performing and traveling with him more regularly, singing and playing guitar with him until the time of his death. I was also greatly inspired by Dr. Ralph Stanley who was kind enough to allow a young boy, under the age of twelve, to perform on the road with him and his band. Those were just two of the many inspirations I had in music.

If you weren’t pursuing a career in music, what would you be doing for a living?

Probably a historian or a history teacher. History offers a passage into a way of life and way of thinking that is oftentimes forgotten in modern society. And it can still serve as a relevant key in solving modern problems.

What is your favorite downtime activity?

Collecting vintage vinyl records and vintage instruments!

Who is your biggest celebrity crush?

N/A

Who is your favorite sports team(s)?

Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Penguins,

What is the last movie that you watched?

Smokey and the Bandit

What is the last album you listened to?

An American Classic: Jeannie Seely

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Night Life: Ray Price or Together For The First Time: Jimmy Martin & Ralph Stanley

What is the greatest country song of all time?

“Dublin Blues” by Guy Clark

What has been your favorite city/town that you’ve visited out on the road?

Bristol VA / TN – Visiting Bristol is like stepping back in time seventy years, I love it! But overall, I love traveling and seeing new places!

What is your favorite meal?

bison steak, gator tail, or frog legs

Who is your dream duet partner?

Patty Loveless, Loretta Lynn or Linda Davis

Who would you like to go on tour with?

Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Anderson or Willie Nelson

What is your ultimate career goal(s)?

To write and sing songs that listeners can relate to and feel emotionally.
The post Interview with Dreyden Gordon first appeared on Hometown Country Music.

We lost another musical legend this weekend with the passing of five-time GRAMMY winner B.J. Thomas to stage 4 lung cancer at the age of 78. Here is a great obituary written by his publicist telling all about his career, and below that is a series of comments from his peers about his loss.

Few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than B.J. Thomas. With his smooth, rich voice and unerring song sense, Thomas’s expansive career crossed multiple genres, including country, pop, and gospel, earning him CMA, Dove, and Grammy awards and nominations since his emergence in the 1960s.

Thomas’ career was anchored by numerous enduring hits, among them his million-selling cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” the Grammy-winning “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” and the iconic “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” which won the Academy Award for best original song. A five-time Grammy award winner and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, Thomas has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, scoring eight No. 1 hits and 26 Top 10 singles over his 50+ years in the music industry. His lengthy chart history led to him being named one of Billboard’s Top 50 Most Played Artists Over The Past 50 Years. Such memorable hits as “I Just Can’t Help Believing, “Don’t Worry Baby,” “Whatever Happened To Old Fashioned Love,” “New Looks From An Old Lover” and “Hooked on a Feeling” have made him a staple on multiple radio formats over the years.

Born in rural Hugo, OK, Billy Joe Thomas moved to Houston, Texas with his family and where he grew up absorbing a variety of musical influences from the traditional country of Ernest Tubb and Hank Williams Dr. to the soulful sounds of Jackie Wilson and Little Richard, whose “Miss Ann” was the first single B.J. ever bought. He began singing in church as a child and in his teens joined the Houston-based band the Triumphs.

Thomas’s first taste of success came in 1966 when he recorded “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” with producer Huey P. Meaux. Released by Scepter Records, it peaked at No. 8 on the pop charts and became his first million-selling single. He released the follow-up single, “Mama,” and delivered his first solo album that same year.

Thomas’ second million-selling hit came in 1968 with the release of “Hooked on a Feeling,” from On My Way, his sophomore album for Scepter. During his days with the New York label, he became friendly with Ronnie Milsap and Dionne Warwick, who were also on the roster at the time. It was Warwick who introduced him to songwriter-producer Burt Bacharach. In January 1970, Thomas topped the charts with “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.” Penned by Bacharach and Hal David, the song was featured in the classic Paul Newman/Robert Redford film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, earning the Oscar for best original song. Sales quickly exceeded two million copies and it has remained one of the most enduring pop hits of all time, reoccurring in such films as Forrest Gump, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Clerks II, and Spider-Man 2 as well as multiple TV shows over the years. He followed that career-defining single with a string of pop/rock hits, including “Everybody’s Out of Town,” “I Just Can’t Help Believing,” “No Love at All” and “Rock and Roll Lullaby.”

After six years with Scepter Records, Thomas signed with Paramount Records where he released two albums—1973’s Songs and 1974’s Longhorns & Londonbridges. In 1975, Thomas released the album Reunion on ABC Records, featuring “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,” which holds the distinction of being the longest titled No. 1 hit ever on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Like many successful pop/rock artists, Thomas fell into drugs and battled substance abuse. His wife Gloria became a born-again Christian and the turning point in Thomas’ life came when he became a believer in 1976. He immediately quit drugs and found an avenue for expressing his faith in gospel music. Thomas signed with Myrrh Records and released the album Home Where I Belong in 1976. Produced by Chris Christian, the project won Thomas a Grammy and became the first of two Dove Award wins. The album became the first gospel record to sell a million copies. The warmth and emotional timbre of Thomas’s voice was well suited to the genre and he became one of gospel music’s most successful artists. His rendition of “Amazing Grace” is considered one of the most poignant of the classic hymn’s many covers.

In addition to his country and gospel success, Thomas also enjoyed a healthy run on the country charts in the 1980s with such hits as “Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love,” “New Looks from an Old Lover Again,” “The Whole World’s in Love When You’re Lonely” and “Two Car Garage.” “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” was No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Country Songs charts. It won the Grammy for Best Country Song in 1976 and was nominated for CMA Single of the Year. On his 39th birthday in 1981, Thomas became the 60th member of the Grand Ole Opry.

Beyond populating multiple radio formats with so many beloved hits, Thomas also voiced the theme song, “As Long As We’ve Got Each Other,” for the popular TV series Growing Pains, and has lent his voice to numerous commercials, including campaigns for Coca-Cola and Pepsi. He can also be seen on television hosting Time Life Music’s Forever 70s infomercial. As an actor, he also appeared in the films Jory and Jake’s Corner. Thomas authored two books, including his autobiography Home Where I Belong.

In 2013, he released The Living Room Sessions, an acoustic album, which celebrated Thomas’s nearly six decades in the music industry. The project featured Thomas dueting with other high profile artists on his most beloved hits, which included teaming with Richard Marx for “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,” Vince Gill on “I Just Can’t Help Believing,” Sara Niemietz on “Hooked on a Feeling,” Keb’ Mo’ on “Most of All,” Lyle Lovett on “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” and The Fray’s Isaac Slade on “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” The album was well-received with critics praising it as a reminder of just how engaging his voice remained after decades of recording and touring.

Though Thomas will be remembered as one of this generation’s premiere vocalists and a consummate entertainer, the humble artist was most proud of his family. He’s survived by his wife of 53 years Gloria, their three daughters Paige Thomas, Nora Cloud, and Erin Moore, and four grandchildren, Nadia Cloud, Keira Cloud, Ruby Moore, and Billy Joe Moore.

A quote from his website exemplifies Thomas’ humble attitude and appreciation for life. “All I am is just another guy. I’ve been very lucky,” he shared. “I’ve had a wonderful life, I’ve been a husband and a father who cherishes his children and now I’m a grandfather, and I’m motivated like all these teachers and preachers and mothers and fathers to help my kids grow up with character and self-respect. I hope that doesn’t sound too grandiose, but that’s what it comes down to. It’s what I’ve tried to do with my music and with the majority of my life.”

Funeral arrangements are forthcoming and will remain private. In lieu of flowers, in-memoriam donations will be accepted by Mission Arlington, Tarrant Area Food Bank, and the SPCA of Texas.

Here is what his peers are saying about his loss.

Crystal Gayle – I was a huge fan of B.J. and his wonderful voice before I started recording, so I loved getting to know him when we were both having hits on United Artist Records early in my career. With all his great songs and career success, B.J. was always so nice and humble. It’s hard to say goodbye to an old friend. My heart is with Gloria and all of B.J.’s family.

David Frizzell – We were at The Grammy’s together in the early 80’s and he was And is “A Winner.”

Deborah Allen – I loved and admired B.J. Thomas and his music long before I had the opportunity to get to know him while at a charity golf tournament in Texas. He was so kind and such a gentle soul. When he sang it was like reliving all those amazing memories and feelings that mesmerized me all my life, along with the rest of the world, all over again. Being in his presence, I could see why many musicians who played on B.J.’s early sessions spoke of his enormous charisma… which they said could only be compared to Elvis. The indelible mark he made in the world of music is iconic, but getting to know B.J. as a real friend was the greatest gift of all. He will truly be loved, missed and remembered forever.

Dionne Warwick – My sincere condolences to the family of one of my favorite duet partners, B.J. Thomas. I will miss him as I know so many others will as well. Rest In Peace my friend.

Don McLean – I’m really sorry to hear of the passing of B.J.Thomas. I hope he had a good life. I remember all the girls loved him.

Doug Stone – B.J. Thomas was one of my personal favorites. One of the best singers that’s ever been. I wanted to record every song he ever did because they were great songs and his voice put them over the top. His music will live forever. I’ll miss him ‘Most of all’. Prayers and condolences to his wife and family.

Duane Allen (The Oak Ridge Boys) – While we were working in Las Vegas, and B.J. was opening for us, we spent almost every night in each other’s room. We both had Texas roots, similar beliefs, and we loved finding and playing new songs to each other. The first time we met, we both talked over each other. It was just crazy. We had so much to say to each other that we were almost talking at the same time and it just became funny to both of us. We had so much fun together, getting to know each other in such a short time. Every time I saw him, we just picked up where we left off. I guess it will be that way in Heaven.

Dwight Yoakam – In memory of one of the greatest voices ever in music… a true gentleman and a kind friend. No one could peddle a note as smooth as BJ Thomas… Rest in sweet peace BJ. God keep you in his arms… Dwight

Gene Watson – Just saw the sad news that my Houston friend, BJ THOMAS, -The BJ Thomas – has passed from cancer. One of the great singers gone too soon.

George Thorogood – Sad to say goodbye to BJ Thomas.

J.P. Pennington (Exile) – We worked with B.J. in the ’60s on the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars. He was so kind and encouraging to us young upstarts. We’ve lost a giant.

Janie Fricke – I’m so saddened to hear about B.J., a wonderful talent who made a huge impact on the music business worldwide, crossing over to touch all hearts, in all genres. I’m so lucky to have toured with him in the West, Oregon, Washington, and other states. I will miss him greatly

Jeannie Seely – Simply heartbreaking to hear of the passing of BJ Thomas. This loss will be felt not only in country music, but all genres. His music could fit in any programming, any event or music outlet. The same could be said about BJ himself. He was always dressed so sharp and appropriate for the occasion, and was so friendly to everyone he met. May this be his legacy.

Joe Bonsall (The Oak Ridge Boys) – The Oak Ridge Boys are devastated by the loss of a friend and a brother and one of the greatest voices to ever sing a song!!! As a young man B.J.’s biography and song called ‘Home Where I Belong,’ and his testimony of how Jesus Christ changed his life meant the world to me. A few years ago I shared that with him late one night over pizza on the Country Music Cruise. We cried and prayed together. I loved B.J. Thomas. There’s a Brand New Star up in Heaven tonight and we will miss you, man. Until the Promised Day.

Johnny Lee – B.J. Thomas has been a dear friend for many years. My heart is broken. Prayers for his family and wife Gloria. Love ya B.J.

Kelly Lang – Like many others, I have been a lifelong fan of B.J. Thomas. His unique vocal style has always soothed my soul. I am so blessed to have gotten to know this kind and gentle man as a precious friend. He was so supportive of others in the music business and always a class act. There will never be anyone that could fill his shoes. Soar high my friend. With you not here, “we’re all so lonesome we could cry

Lacy J. Dalton – B.J. was a great entertainer – he will be missed

Lee Greenwood – B.J. Thomas not only had a great voice, but he was right for his time in the movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with the song ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head’ which was perfect for his career. I knew him personally and he was a wonderful human being. He will be sadly missed.

Les Taylor (Exile) – I remember listening to BJ.and man I wish I could sing like that…what a great voice and a wonderful human being! The music world has lost yet another Great, Great artist!

Linda Davis – BJ Thomas’ voice holds a special place in my memory. No one sounds like BJ. “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” is even sadder today.” Heaven’s choir is sweeter now.

Marie Osmond – We have lost another great one BJ Thomas! This clip is from the last time we really got to chat (watch the full video at https://youtu.be/WaexVD0Fq3g). What an incredible person and legacy you have left us with my dear friend!!! May you #RestInPeace #Legend

Marlon Hargis (Exile) – B.J. was always one of the nicest, down-to-earth artists I was ever around, a real gentleman ad a true music legend.

Mike Huckabee – One of the greatest voices in pop music. My privilege to have B.J. Thomas on my show and play music with him. Gracious, humble, & his voice a remarkable gift from God. Condolences to his family.

Paul Stanley – One of the signs of true greatness in any of the arts is instant recognition of the creator. When you heard B.J. Thomas sing there was never a doubt who it was. RIP. Gone too soon but I will always know that voice

Questlove – I don’t even know the technical jargon to use to describe the pure soul that is #BJThomas’ voice. In the age of the variety show in the 70s, his voice wasn’t rock nor pop nor country nor gospel——it was always soul to me. One of the first voices I remember in my childhood (he made a few Christmas lps’ his 80s version of #TheFirstNoel was a constant staple wherever I went) —-so many hits too. I know this is somewhat “my thing” or whatever. But man….this one hurts man….rest in melody to the great BJ Thomas

Ray Stevens – BJ Thomas was one of the most natural singers I ever knew. He was a pleasure to know and to work with. The Angels were there when he recorded ‘Rain Drops’ and he’s now added his unique voice to their eternal choir.

Rhonda Vincent – Always loved working with B.J. Thomas. Such a unique voice, and always the professional. My sincere condolences to his family.

Richard Marx – So sad to hear of B.J. Thomas’ passing today. I was in touch with him three weeks ago and he seemed ready to fight his diagnosis. He was a kind and elegant gentleman and I will miss him, and his amazing voice. My love to his family.

Sawyer Brown – We’re heartbroken at the passing of our hero and friend The BJ Thomas. Simply the best. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve listened to this record—grateful for the gospel message shared in it. Prayers for Gloria and his family. We love you, B.J.

Sonny LeMaire (Exile) – Long before we got the chance to work with him, I was a fan. After we met him and shared the same stage, I became an even bigger fan! He had an amazing voice and was a true talent, yet he was such a kind and humble man. Rest in peace B.J.

Stella Parton – RIP my sweet talented friend BJ Thomas. Sing with the angels now my precious friend.

Steve Dorff – BJ Thomas was one of those very special artists, who had that unmistakably unique voice. I was so fortunate to have gotten to work with this amazingly gifted man, and to call him my friend.

Steve Goetzman (Exile) – I had a unique opportunity to spend a few brief moments with BJ away from show business. I learned that both he and Gloria were givers and generous in nature. My life got a little better because of them.

Steven Curtis Chapman – Saddened by the news of the passing of a great artist and a brother who inspired and influenced me as a boy…Welcome Home BJ Thomas.

Sundance Head – B j Thomas died today. He and my dad were best friends. I know all of the stories. It’s amazing how you can leave a huge mark in the world if your lucky. Most people just go threw life working living creating a family but sometimes you get really lucky and hit a lick that provides for you and your family for a long time . Becoming creators and innovators This is the story of BJ and RH they are texas and music legends. You boys did good. I love you and I know your gonna make that sky brighter. I’m so proud to have been around you and I hope to see you again and sing a melody together in the last battle of good verses evil. In your good name I pray .. and may you’re swords slay satin! Amen

T. Graham Brown – This first song I sang on the first gig I ever had in 1973 was “Raindrops.” I mimicked B.J. the best I could. I tried to sing just like him. He was my hero. I later had the honor to call him my friend and he made a great friend. Sheila and I are heartbroken, but we take comfort knowing that he is out of pain and now gazes upon the face of Jesus. Rest easy, my brother!

T.G. Sheppard – I can’t believe that another great voice has gone silent. One of the reasons I became a singer was because of B.J. Thomas. It was after hearing his recording of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” I’m so thankful that our friendship through the years grew into a deep one. To say I’ll miss him is an understatement. My prayers and deepest sympathy go out to Gloria and their family. R.I.P. my dear friend.

Tim Atwood – My dad loved westerns. I remember going to the theater as a family to watch the movie Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. I was still a kid myself, but I vividly remember the now-iconic scene where Paul Newman rode Katharine Ross around the farm on an old bicycle to the tune of this new song called “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head.” The music was just as much a part of the scene as the visual. The artist didn’t oversing the song. His delivery was playful, and he let the music breathe. I think that was the moment I first became a fan of B.J. Thomas. Years later I performed with B.J. on the TV show Nashville On The Road, then again on TNN’s Nashville Now. I’ll never forget how kind he was. B.J. is part of some of my favorite full-circle memories. The man was a legend and earned his place in our music history books.
