Sad news to report, as we’ve gotten the below press release announcing the passing of Kris Kristofferson.  Scroll down to the bottom to see what his peers are saying in remembrance of his passing:

Artist, singer, songwriter, actor and activist Kris Kristofferson passed away peacefully in his home in Maui, Hawaii Saturday, September 28, surrounded by family. He was 88 years old.

Born Kristoffer Kristofferson in the border town of Brownsville, Texas on June 22, 1936, Kristofferson changed the language of country music, with extraordinary internal rhymes, Shakespearean iambic pentameter, and socially progressive subject matter that found the personal within the political.

He was a Rhodes Scholar in Oxford, a defensive back, a bartender, a Golden Gloves boxer, a gandy dancer, a forest firefighter, a road crew member, and an Army Ranger who flew helicopters. He was a peacenik, a revolutionary, an actor, a superstar, a sex symbol, and a family man. He was commissioned to teach English at West Point, though he gave that up to become a Nashville songwriting bum.

Sam Peckinpah cast him as Billy the Kid. Willie Nelson recorded an entire album of his songs, then joined him in supergroup The Highwaymen, with Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Muhammad Ali sat side-stage at his concerts. Mama Cass Elliot called him “No Eyes.” Atlantic Monthly published his short stories.

He believed that songwriting is a spiritual communion of mind, body, and soul, and he believed that William Blake was correct in asserting that anyone divinely ordered for spiritual communion but buries his talent will be pursued by sorrow and desperation through life and by shame and confusion for eternity.

“(Blake) is telling you that you’ll be miserable if you don’t do what you’re supposed to do,” Kristofferson said in the Ken Burns’ documentary Country Music.

Kristofferson’s devotion to spiritual communion brought much in the way of sorrow, desperation, and misery, but it led to triumph.

His work ethic was evident from an early age, celebrated by his parents and, when he was a teenager, a construction supervisor on Wake Island said he was the best worker on the construction crew.

“I took pride in being the best laborer, the guy that could dig the ditches the fastest,” he said. “Something inside me made me want to do the tough stuff . . . Part of it was that I wanted to be a writer, and I figured that I had to get out and live. I know that’s why I ran in front of the bulls in Pamplona.”

The son of a major general and a philanthropic mother, Kristofferson spent his childhood learning lessons in honor and civility, though he arrived at different notions of these things than did his parents. He graduated high school in San Mateo, California, in 1954, then attended Pomona College, where he played football (“I was pretty slow, but I was small,” he said) and studied writing under Dr. Frederick Sontag, who pushed him to apply for a Rhodes scholarship. At Oxford, he wrote stories and examined the works of William Blake.

Kristofferson earned his master’s from Oxford in 1960, then returned to California, married his high school sweetheart, joined the Army, and learned to fly helicopters. In the Army, he wrote funny songs inspired by Hank Williams, until he fell under the sway of folk maestro Bob Dylan.

“The direction Dylan was pointing in made it a respectable ambition, a respectable thing to do,” Kristofferson said.

The Army assigned Kristofferson to teach literature at West Point, a duty that frightened him once he found that he’d have to turn in lesson plans, explaining to superiors exactly what he’d be teaching in class. He said, “It sounded like hell to me.”

And so, in 1965, he came to Nashville to visit with Marijohn Wilkin, the songwriter of “Long Black Veil” and a relation of Kristofferson’s Army platoon leader. On Kristofferson’s first Nashville night, he met Cowboy Jack Clement, a renegade creative who would become a lifelong friend. Soon after that, Wilkin helped Kristofferson get a backstage pass to the Grand Ole Opry, where he met a pacing panther named Johnny Cash. In less than two Music City weeks, Kristofferson decided to resign his Army post and move to Nashville to write songs. Soon after, he met successful songwriter Tom T. Hall in a Nashville bar. Kristofferson introduced himself to Hall, who said “Good to see you . . . It’s a hairy-legged town.”

Kristofferson scuffled for more than four years in Nashville, entering his 30s as what his parents considered a ne’er do well who was dragging down the family name. He worked as a janitor at CBS’s Nashville studio, happy to empty trash cans and make coffee in exchange for access to recording sessions by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and others. He rode around on a well-bruised Honda motorcycle, and neglected family matters in ways that came to haunt him and that doomed his first marriage. He was heartened by praise from the people whom he hoped would become peers. When his “From the Bottle to the Bottom” was recorded by Grand Ole Opry star Billy Walker in 1969, Tom T. Hall said, “God, that’s a great song” and quoted lines back to the fledgling talent.

“That kind of thing was enough to keep me going back then,” Kristofferson said.

After more than four years in songwriting purgatory, things began to roll Kristofferson’s way. Ray Stevens recorded his “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” and Johnny Cash recorded the same song and took it to the top of the country charts. Cash performed “Sunday Mornin'” on his ABC television show, and, despite the cries of network censors, refused to change Kristofferson’s line “Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned” to “Wishing, Lord, that I was home.” That song was voted the Country Music Association’s song of the year in 1970.

Roger Miller, one of Kristofferson’s songwriting heroes, recorded “Me and Bobby McGee,” a song inspired by publisher and Monument Records boss Fred Foster’s suggestion that a song should be written about Foster’s secretary, Bobby McKee. And Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times” was recorded by the great Ray Price and became a No. 1 country hit.

After arguing with Foster about his validity as a recording artist (Kristofferson said, “I sing like a fucking frog,” to which Foster replied, “Yes, but like a frog that can communicate.”), Kristofferson’s first solo album came out in April of 1970. It contained now-classics including “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” “To Beat the Devil,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “Just the Other Side of Nowhere,” “Darby’s Castle,” and “Best of All Possible Worlds.” It began with “Blame It On the Stones,” a song that opened with the decidedly non-traditional line, “Mr. Marvin Middle Class is really in a stew/ Wonderin’ what the younger generation’s coming to.”

With that debut album, Kristofferson emerged as a luminous figure whose fame expanded far beyond country music. Janis Joplin recorded “Me and Bobby McGee,” which became her signature hit. And Kristofferson became a counter-culture darling, beloved by artists and listeners who had never before paid attention to country music.

“You can look at Nashville pre-Kris and post-Kris, because he changed everything,” said Bob Dylan.

Kristofferson’s second album, The Silver Tongued Devil and I, came out on Monument Records in 1971 and contained “The Pilgrim – Chapter 33,” a song he claimed to write about friends Cash, Chris Gantry, Funky Donnie Fritts, and others but later admitted was mostly about himself. “He’s a walkin’ contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,” he sang. “Taking every wrong direction on his lonely way back home.”

All those wrong directions led to some spectacular locales. In 1971, Kristofferson began a side career as an actor. He would go on to win a Golden Globe award for his role in A Star Is Born, and to act in numerous films including Semi-Tough, Songwriter, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, Lone Star, and Blade. He toured the world with his band and with Rita Coolidge, his wife from 1973 until 1980. He moved from Nashville to California. And he released seven solo albums between 1972 and 1979.

This flurry of activity and the accompanying celebrity did not ease Kristofferson’s mind, which was prone to depression, or his problematic drinking habit. The heady years of grand success proved to be some of the most difficult of his life.

“The darkness is driving me farther away from the shore/ Throw me a rhyme or a reason to try to go on,” he wrote and sang in “Shipwrecked in the 80s.” He found rhyme and reason in the graceful form of Lisa Meyers, who married Kristofferson in 1983 and helped him get his life under control. The couple would have five children together.

In 1985, Kristofferson joined Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson to form the supergroup now called The Highwaymen. The group returned Kristofferson’s voice to radio, provided a larger audience for him to relay his critical and sometimes controversial views on American foreign policy, and offered him great joy.

“Every time I look at a picture of Willie and me and John and Waylon, I find it amazing that they let the janitor in there,” he told journalist Mikal Gilmore.

After two roundly ignored solo albums for Mercury Records, Repossessed and Third World Warrior, Kristofferson began working with producer Don Was in 1995. Their creative partnership proved fruitful, with Was’ restrained production allowing the gristly character in Kristofferson’s voice to be heard to full effect, and with Kristofferson writing pensive, eloquent songs that rank with his finest works. “It’s about making sense of life at this end of the game,” Kristofferson said about his 2009 Closer to the Bone album, and that comment also applies to Was-produced works A Moment of Forever (2006), This Old Road (2009), and Feeling Mortal (2013). On his 80^th birthday in 2016, Kris released The Cedar Creek Sessions, which was nominated for a Grammy for best Americana Album six months later.

Until the pandemic in 2020, Kristofferson toured incessantly in the 21st century, a quiet man in worn brown boots, commanding stages with only his guitar and harmonica for accompaniment. His Gibson acoustic might go out of tune . . . no matter. In his final years he performed with Merle Haggard’s band, The Strangers.

In 2003, Kristofferson received the Free Speech Award from the Americana Music Association and in 2004 he became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Since then, he received lifetime achievement honors from BMI, The Recording Academy, the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, among many others.

“When I got started, I was one of the people hoping to bring respect to country music,” he said. “Some of the songs I had that got to be hits did that. I imagine that’s why somebody might vote me into a Hall of Fame. I know it’s not because of my golden throat.”

On the back cover of The Silver Tongued Devil and I, Kristofferson advised that his songs were “Echoes of the going ups and coming downs, walking pneumonia and run-of-the-mill madness, colored with guilt, pride, and a vague sense of despair.”

Sometimes divine communion, then, is holy hell. Kristofferson brought some of that hell on himself, and he lived through times when guilt and despair were anything but vague, and when pride was hard to conjure. Asked about regrets, he said, “Listen, I have those. But my life has turned out so well for me that I would be afraid to change anything.”

Kristofferson’s survived by his wife, Lisa; eight children, Tracy, Kris Jr., Casey, Jesse, Jody, John, Kelly, and Blake; and seven grandchildren, who offer the following consolatory statement:

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28 at home. Of course all of the Swiss Artists were so excited they all wanted to sing with him, and so they did, from the Yodelers to the Rock Stars to the Folk Singers and everything in between because Kris’ music is Universal, everyone knows it and everyone loves to sing it & everyone will miss Kris Kristofferson so much but his Legacy will live on. A consummate lyricist who changed country music songwriting forever. His passing, coming only days after the death of my friend Hugh Prestwood, whom like Kris wrote so many lyrical and musical masterpieces, has made this week a devastating loss for our industry and music. • Jimmy Wayne – I’ve shared the stage with many acts, artist and lots of legends. September 11, 2004 was a very special evening. #KrisKristofferson met me backstage at a venue and introduced himself. We talked for a few minutes and then he asked me if I would tune his guitar. I was so nervous. I took my time and made sure his guitar was perfectly in tune. Shortly before Kris went on stage I handed him his guitar. He walked out to the microphone and stood in front of thousands of people and performed his hits with the guitar I’d just tuned. I watched his show from the side of the stage and thought to myself, “ I just tuned Kris Kristofferson‘s guitar. I think I’m gonna be telling this story for the rest of my life.” That was one very cool and unforgettable experience.  RIP, Mr. Kristofferson.
• John Ford Coley – This is another one that just really hurts. We are losing the cream of the crop. I so admired Kris Kristofferson. I remember the first time that I heard “Me and Bobby McGee” and I thought who in the world wrote this one. I learned that thing backwards and forwards. Just the one line of “pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna” to this day still has to be one of the best visuals lyrics I’ve ever heard. I was in love with his music ever since. What a remarkable writer.
• John McEuen – Kris Kristofferson made great music for us that was brought to life by Elvis, Cash, Joplin, and Kris himself (and many others). What a sad day to lose him. I recorded with him at John Carter Cash’s cabin studio on a Carter Family song (Gold Watch and Chain), and met up with him several times over the years before and after that. While watching his solo show in St. Petersburg, Florida I was amazed at the calm control and love he got from his audience.
• John Rich – So sad to hear Kris Kristofferson has passed. He and I became friends over the years, and it was a distinct honor every time I got to work or hang out with him. He was one of the greatest lyricists to ever live, and a true class act. He set the bar so very high. Miss ya brother

I will never forget his support for me when I received my first CMA Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year Award – his friendship and encouragement helped validate my career in country music and my place in Nashville. My family and I send our deepest sympathy to Kris’ family. We lost a giant in our industry today!
• Lee Roy Parnell – My heart is heavy today since getting the news of my friend, Kris Kristofferson’s passing.  No words could possibly express all the gratitude I feel for this fine man, both personally and professionally. • Trisha Yearwood – This one hurts. The word legend gets tossed around a lot but with Kristofferson the shoe fits. These are shoes that won’t be filled. Rest easy.
• Ward Davis – It’s weird to think that one of the coolest things I ever got to do was change a guitar string with my buddy for the frustrated old man standing in that doorway right there. But it was Kris’ string, and we had no business anywhere near it. Yet, there we were. He was as we all are. A human being. Kris Kristofferson was an exceptional example.  I met a man once, in Marble, Colorado who had gone to college with Kris at Oxford. He told me “Kris…..turned his back on academia.” My response was, “Well, Thank God!” And I meant it. And God blessed us, yall. Giving us that man and his beautiful art. And God bless him for sharing it with us.

Charlie Daniels

The Country Music community is mourning the loss of a true American Treasure today as Grand Ole Opry member and Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels passed away this morning in Hermitage, TN due to a hemorrhagic stroke. The multi-instrumentalist is best known for his fiddle playing, patriotism, generosity, and of course his iconic hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

His career spanned several decades and dabbled in multiple genres including Bluegrass, Gospel, and Blues, but he is best known for his contributions to Southern Rock and Country Music.  The North Carolina native started off as a songwriter and session musician playing for artists such as Bob Dylan and Ringo Starr before stepping out on his own in 1971.

In addition to his Opry membership (2008) and Country Music Hall of Fame induction (2016), he was also inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2009.  He would also add Grammy winner, actor, and several other awards and recognitions to his well-rounded resume.

His catalog boasts five Top 10 albums, four Platinum albums, three Gold albums, and seventeen Top 40 singles.  Despite his musical contributions, his biggest impact on the world may be his charitable efforts headlined by the Volunteer Jam, a recurring event that dates back to 1974.  He also wasn’t afraid to speak his mind about politics and current events, as his series of “Soapbox” blog posts prove.

Daniels was one of the best follows on Twitter, having his daily routine of tweets.  Each morning, he would fire off a series of tweets starting with a “Daily Bible Verse,” followed by a “Let’s Make the Day Count” motivational thought, a “Pray for the Blue” reminder, a reminder of how many babies are aborted each day (125,000), a reminder that “Benghazi ain’t going away,” a reminder that “22 veterans commit suicide each day,” and a reminder to “remember 9/11.”  He would then later end the night with a “Guess I’ll hang it up for tonight, Goodnight planet earth-God bless” tweet.  His final tweet was this image:

Our industry has a huge void in it today. A great man of principal, honor, integrity and faith, who always told it like it is. There will never ever be another Charlie Daniels. • Colt Ford – I thought that 2020 could only get better and I was wrong. To hear that one of my heros has passed away, the great Charlie Daniels, has broken my heart. I can’t even put the words together. He was so special to the world not just as a musician, but as a man, a truly great human being. Charlie has been so good to me over my career. I have been so lucky to share the stage with him many times. I can’t imagine this world without him. I have had many talks with him about music, about life, and about how to treat people. He stood up for this country, he stood up for what was right, he stood up for his faith. He did what he said — he was everything I want be and still want to be. I will never get over you not being here, Uncle Charlie. There has never been anyone like you. There will never be another. I love you, Charlie. Rest Easy. You are and will always be the BEST.
• Confederate Railroad – Confederate Railroad sends our deepest condolences to Hazel, Charlie Jr, all the members of the Charlie Daniels Band and his many fans. Charlie Daniels was not only a star, member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and American Patriot, he was and will always be a legend. I lost my mother seven years ago to a hemorrhagic stroke; the shock only ever softened by knowing she was with her Lord. • Gene Watson – It’s with a heavy heart that I am letting you know our good friend and Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels passed away this morning at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, TN from a hemorrhagic stroke. He was 83. What a truly great man beyond just his obvious talents as a singer and musician. He was a force of nature and will be greatly missed.

Being that he is somebody we look up to, from Wilmington NC and my brother and I have lived there for 20yrs, we of course said yes and walked over to his bus. Charlie, his wife, Tom and I sat just the 4 of us laughing and having a great convo about life/tour and Wilmington NC for a good while. He was one of the nicest/down to Earth guys I’ve ever met and I’ll never forget that day. Right before we were about to get back on our bus say goodbyes, and head out to our next show he said “well we better take a picture, it’s not often I run into brothers from Wilmington out here on the road!”  This photo is that moment on his bus. • Jeremy Westby – I had the pleasure of representing Charlie Daniels and his charity The Journey Home Project for many years. He headlined a concert at the Air Force Academy back in 1998 when I was road managing the opening act – the Clark Family Experience – who were managed by Jim and Sherman Halsey. I’ll never forget how Charlie could shred that bow and keep the audience at the edge of their seats. I didn’t have the pleasure of talking to him then but as the years passed and my career came full-circle, I did – and then some. Charlie was much more than a client. He welcomed me and my family into his home on holidays, we had media junkets to New York and more wonderful experiences than I can count. To say he leaves an indelible mark on our community is an absolute understatement. I will forever cherish the moments we had, and being part of the team to help guide his induction to the Country Music Hall of Fame will never be forgotten!  My heart goes out to Hazel, David, Bebe, Paula, Angela, Charlie Jr. and the rest of The CDB. Love to you all.
• Jerry Lee Lewis – Charlie Daniels was an incredible musician, entertainer and friend. I was thrilled to get to know him on the road and in the studio throughout our careers. He will always be remembered as a patriot, and a faith-filled Christian above all else.

• Ray Benson – We lost our pal Charlie Daniels.  I met Charlie in 1972 in San Fran at The Keystone Corner we played a double bill with his new band tickets were $1 and Freddies mom made free Spaghetti! I’ll cherish the time we had together. My Love to Hazel family band crew RIP friend!

I wrote a recitational song called Plowboy that ended up getting me a record deal.. I owe that to this man… He inspired me to do something different that stood out.. I’ve always credited him for that…I was lucky enough to do a few shows as his opener as well.. cherished memories.. • Ronnie Milsap – Charlie Daniels embodied the fire of the South. He blurred lines between rock and country, when rock didn’t think country was cool, and his Volunteer Jams weren’t just legendary, they brought people from both of those worlds together. He was a patriot, a proud American, a world class musician, an incredible showman, as well as a wonderful father, husband, grandpa and friend. We’re all so sad to lose him, but if I know Charlie, he’s up in heaven, rosining up his bow and getting ready to let those fingers fly! Godspeed, my friend, you’re home.
• Sam Moore – One of the best friends, not only a peer, but a true friend. He was one of the most spiritual men. When we got together for a show in Oklahoma, we performed ‘Will The Circle be Unbroken.’ I never will forget that night.
• Sammy Kershaw – The music community has lost one of its greatest American icons today. Charlie Daniels is one of those artists whose music will never die. He was also one of the nicest people I have ever met in my life and also a great Patriot. God bless him. Charlie Daniels was statue material.
• Sara Evans – When I was 10 years old, I came to a Nashville and recorded this song. It’s called “I’m Gonna Be (The Only Female Fiddle Player in Charlie Daniels Band)”. RIP Charlie.  (See Videos section below)
• Sawyer Brown – It’s hard to know where to begin talking about Charlie. Maybe it should be the first time we met him, when he walked over to the bus, introduced himself (as if we weren’t already in awe of him) and told us he enjoyed our show—leaving us speechless—and when we called him Mr. Daniels, he told us, “Boys, just call me Charlie. We’re friends now.” Or the second time we ever worked with him, and he hopped up on the bus at about 7:00 AM and said, “Mark Miller, get up, son—we’re going golfing.” Or the time we were scheduled to do a weekend of shows with Reba McEntire but her band was tragically lost in the plane crash a few days before and Charlie called us and said, “Boys, I’ll fly in and do the show with y’all, if you don’t mind backing me up.” Mind?! We told him that when we started out playing clubs, half of our set was CDB music—so we’d already been in training. It was such a thrill to get to share the stage with him that night—and every night we ever got to do a show with Charlie. And there were a lot of shows over the years. There was never a show we played with Charlie that we didn’t say, “We need to more of these!”  And while I loved every minute of those shows, I really treasure all those times we got to visit and talk about books and music and life on the road. I was like a kid getting to go his favorite relative’s house every time we worked with Charlie. I’d make a beeline for his bus, give him and Mrs. Hazel a hug, and the visiting would commence.  When we first started out, people would ask what kind of career we wanted to have, and we’d point to the Charlie Daniels Band, and say, “That. That kind of timeless music. That kind of no-holds-barred stage show. That kind of longevity.” But as much as Charlie exemplified all of that, he was also a good man. A true gentleman. (Who was one of the first people Mark heard from when Madison was born? Yep, it was Charlie.) A true friend.  At the end of every visit, Charlie would give me a hug and say, “Love you, son.” I have no doubt where you are right now, Charlie—so I know we will see you again. And since we already know the songs, save us a place on the bandstand. We love you, Charlie.  Mrs. Hazel, Charlie Jr. and the whole CDB family—we are keeping you in our prayers.
• Scooter Brown – I grew up listening to Charlie Daniels. I never thought back then that he would become a friend and a mentor. He is the definition of ‘Salt of the Earth.’ His music touched millions, his kindness was always felt and his patriotism was second to none. I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities he’s given me in the music business. We have lost a true legend and I will miss him dearly.
• Scotty McCreery – Rest In Peace Charlie Daniels, my fellow North Carolinian. I was honored to receive NC’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award from you backstage at the Opry in 2017. Thank you for your sharing your talent and your kindness with all of us.
• Shane Owens – It’s hard to imagine country music without Charlie Daniels and the world will never be the same. Thankfully he left a legacy like no other that we can reflect on. You are loved and you will be missed!”
• Shannon Lawson – I cannot believe Charlie Daniels is dead. I knew him and his family well. Christmas parties, jammed with him a few times, we shared the bill on a few shows. I played to the largest crowd I have ever played to on a co-bill with Charlie to 30,000 people. He was such a great guy.  Rest in peace Charlie.
• Steve Azar – Rest in peace my friend. I’ll never forget how good you were to me on the road and the time I had to cancel writing with you to have throat surgery. Blessings to you, your family and the multitude of people you have touched during your life here! Gonna miss ya, SA
• Steve Wariner – Charlie Daniels’ work on Earth is done. While we will miss him and his talents here, we know he has gone home now. Rest In Peace, old friend. You are so loved. Sending love to Hazel and the entire family.
• Suzy Bogguss – So sad to hear of Charlie Daniels’ passing. His songs were some of the first I learned on guitar. He truly was the consummate performer and just gave us everything all the way through his life! Thanks Charlie for the amazing music,, your love of life and your great laugh. We will hear your songs echo in the halls of @opry
• Swon Brothers – Heard the news about Charlie this morning. This is a sad day. He was one of the sweetest coolest guys we’ve met in this business. We have played quite a few shows with The Charlie Daniels Band
  and it was always the most memorable and enjoyable times. One time in particular the show was on hold due to storms so Charlie invited us on his bus to chat. His stories about the road and this business are unmatchable. The storm turned into a tornado and our bands and crews were told to gather in a bathroom of a gymnasium. Although a bit scary, that is one of the nights on the road that I’ll never forget. We all sang songs together with the natural reverb of the gym and the bathroom. Then sat in folding chairs talking until the storm passed. Not only was he a legend for country music, but a legend of a man. He told us about his mistakes, corrections, and his love for God. Rest In Peace CD… we will all miss ya and will see you again.
• T.G. Sheppard – Charlie was one of the most talented, kindest, patriotic and spiritual people I’ve ever had the pleasure of calling a friend. Whether I was doing shows with him from the Opry stage or on a stage in far away Japan, he always remained the consummate performer. The void he leaves in our business is enormous, and I know the music he will make in heaven will be overwhelming. Rest easy my friend.
• T. Graham Brown – It was an honor to know Charlie. He was a Godly, family man and the U.S.A. didn’t have a better friend. He always had an encouraging word and a firm handshake. Sheila and I pray for Miss Hazel, the family, the band and his entire organization. Rest in peace ol’ pal!
• Tammy King (The Steeldrivers) – Charlie Daniels was a giant among men!  An unbelievably talented musician, an American icon in every sense of the word.  I will forever remember the Opry performance when the SteelDrivers shared the stage with him and played a few songs together.  He leaves an enduring legacy and will be greatly missed.  The angels just gained one heck of a fiddler today!
• Tanya Tucker – Charlie Daniels was someone you could lean on at any time or ask his advice. I am so blessed to have known him as a peer, as a friend and performed with him many times. “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” well, the devil never had a chance! And now Charlie is playing that fiddle with the heavenly angels in the Big Man’s band. Some day I’ll see you again, Charlie.
• Teddy Gentry (Alabama) – From the eighties until last year, I’ve had the pleasure of not only touring with but getting to know Charlie Daniels. He was everything on stage a great artist should be. But it was the off stage Charlie I grew to love over the years. Many times Charlie would answer the call to do charity work and never charge a cent. He set a humble example of what a man, a friend, and Christian should be by the way he treated others. I’m gonna miss you my friend.
• Terri Clark – One of the kindest men I’ve ever met. I’ll never forget this first time I met him in person many years ago, and he asked me what size hat I wore… magically a Charlie Daniels signature cowboy hat showed up with my name inside it. A legend, man of faith and proud American. I don’t think it’s purely a coincidence that he went to heaven right around “Independence Day”. The angels have another one for their choir. #ripcharliedaniels
• The Cadillac Three – Charlie was the coolest of the cool. A genuine talent and the nicest guy you ever met. He was so positive and encouraging, always told us to just keep on doin’ what we we’re doin’. We’ll miss ya Charlie.
• The Henningsons – I just heard that Charlie passed away. He was a great American and a wonderful Human being. We played at the Grand Ol Opry with him and he came and visited us in our dressing room. Had a great conversation with one of my heroes.
• Thompson Square – Another massive country music loss today. What an amazing artist and American. Rest In Peace Charlie Daniels
• Tim Atwood – Charlie Daniels was a music icon, yet every time I played piano for Charlie he made me feel like I was part of the Charlie Daniels’ family.   He loved our country and devoted much of his time to encouraging and performing for our men and women in uniform.  When my son Torre was in the Army, and he was about to ship out for his first tour in Iraq, Charlie met with Torre before he left, and he prayed with him.  You have no idea what that meant to me.  The devil can stay down in Georgia for all I care, because Charlie Daniels is heaven bound!
• Tim McGraw – Oh man, sad to hear about Charlie Daniels passing…I grew up on his music… brilliant songs and smokin’ records. And always, without fail, every time I had the pleasure of being around him, he was one of most genuine, kind and thoughtful folks I’ve ever run across. The word “legend” gets tossed around so easily these days, but not in this case… he was #BeyondLegendary.
• Toby Keith – Charlie Daniels was part of my very first music collection. And a great guy. He showed us how it’s done. RIP superstar.
• Trace Adkins – Today I have a very heavy heart as I reflect on the legendary Charlie Daniels. It’s true that meeting your heroes is dangerous because more often than not, they disappoint you. Charlie was the exception. I absolutely cherished his friendship.  I could write a book about the positive influence he had on my life, but today I’ll just say that I miss him already. Love you, Charlie.
• Tracy Lawrence – Heartbroken from the news of my friend Charlie Daniels passing this morning. Heaven’s gate opened wide as that golden fiddle was laid in his hands. So much respect for Charlie. The musician, the songwriter but mostly, the man. You will be missed. God bless your life & legacy.
• Travis Denning – RIP to the Long Haired Country Boy. The first time I ever stepped foot on stage was on the Volunteer Jam. One of the kindest people I ever met in this business.
• Travis Tritt – My heart is crushed today after hearing that my dear friend Charlie Daniels has passed away. Charlie was the first legendary artist to take me under his wing and encourage me when I was first getting started in the business. He was always there for me when I needed him. I have so many great memories of touring, performing, writing and recording with Charlie, but my favorite memories are of simply talking with the man when it was just the two of us alone. Farewell dear friend until we meet again. Thank you for being such a friend, mentor and inspiration to me. I will always be grateful.

• Ty Herndon – One of the finest Human beings I know… Entered the gates of heaven today. Charlie was a man of great integrity. And he had a wide open heart. His Christmas concert at the Ryman was the first gig I played after I came out in 2014. He simply hugged me and said go do what you do son. And that was it. We shall miss you Charlie Daniels. I will miss you. Please give Joe Diffie a hug.

• Vince Gill – I first met Charlie Daniels in 1976, and then when I was touring as part of Pure Prairie League, we opened a bunch of shows for him. I made a great friend in Charlie, and we’ve remained friends for over 40 years — that’s hard to do. He was a great example of loyalty and I’ll miss him.
• Vonn Kiss – A pioneer that stood for so many great things outside of music, a true patriot. He taught us all what a fiddle truly was while never being afraid to voice his opinion. He’s going to be deeply missed but his legacy will no doubt live on. Prayers and thoughts are with his family, friends and fans.
• Wade Bowen – Charlie Daniels played @BowenMusicfest years ago and my exact words to him were “Mr. Daniels you are the nicest artist we’ve ever had!” We had a good long visit & it could not have been a better experience or a better show. He was fantastic on every level. I will never forget that. He even gave us some love on his socials the next day about all the good we are trying to do around Waco with @BowenFoundation. Thank you Charlie for being the bad ass you are. We will all miss you dearly! Godspeed.
• Wynonna Judd – Getting to open for Mr. Charlie was one of my very first memorable moments in country music. He’s an important part of my story. When Mom & I opened for Mr. Charlie in the 80’s, I was so young, so naive, and in awe of my heroes and sheroes in country music. I spent most of my time trying to talk to, hang out with and learn everything I could from the artists we played shows with. Mr. Charlie was always so kind to me. He always made me feel so important. His heart. Oh my. His passion for God and his country, it really was what made him such a gifted soul. I adore him!! He’d come over to me in a crowded room to hug me. He always made time for me and I respect him so much for the way he treated me and so many others in the room. During one of our moments backstage before a show, I was talking to Mr. Charlie about how nervous I was being onstage. He told me to “Never look at the empty seats.” I have not forgotten his words to me. Charlie Daniels is a maverick. His heart is bigger than most. He lived and he loved large!!!!! Thank you for your service to our great country sir. I love you so
