Remembering Toby Keith

The country music world woke up to devastating news this morning that Toby Keith had lost his battle with stomach cancer at the age of 62. Tributes from his peers have been pouring in, so we’re doing our best to capture as many of them as possible below.

Toby Keith’s wide-ranging catalog is worthy of a deep dive. While he may be best known to the casual fan for his brash hits like “How Do You Like Me Now?” or his witty tunes such as “Beer For My Horses” and “Red Solo Cup”, or his patriotic anthems such as “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” and “American Soldier”; there was a lot more meat on the bone with several deep heart-wrenching songs about lost love and heartache.

He launched his career in 1993 with the first of his twenty #1 hits, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” He went on to have 41 top-10 hits in what will one day be a Hall of Fame career. He made a stunning comeback for what would become his farewell with his poignant performance of “Don’t Let The Old Man In” on the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards.

Aaron Lewis – Toby Keith wasn’t only an amazing singer-songwriter, a pioneer of truth-telling and a legend in his own right, but he was also a lover of God and Country. And above all, a Patriot. Academy of Country Music – We are heartbroken by the passing of Country Music superstar Toby Keith. A 15-time ACM Award recipient, including multiple wins for ACM Top Male Vocalist and ACM Album of the Year, he was named ACM Entertainer of the Year twice, in 2002 and 2003. With worldwide sales of more than 40 million album, he built an exceptional career on well-sung ballads, barroom singalongs, and patriotic anthems, as well as heartfelt songwriting, for which he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as received the National Medal of Arts. Indeed, Keith wrote the vast majority of his no. 1 hits and had a chart-topping single every year for 20 consecutive years. He also dedicated himself tirelessly to countless charitable initiatives, including several USO tours and events. Most recently, he received the ACM Spirit Award, presented to a singer-songwriter who continues the legacy of Country legend Merle Haggard. Alan Jackson – Denise and I are saddened to hear about our friend Toby Keith. Our prayers are with Tricia and the entire Keith family.
Anita Cochran – Woke up to the sad news of the passing of @tobykeith. He was always so nice to me. We spent a lot of time together when we filmed the Dukes Of Hazzard Movie. Such a strong man with all the money in the world but still cancer took him down. He fought so hard. Thank you for the music and the memories. RIP friend.
Ashley Cooke – man, @tobykeith was a real true icon. got to see him play at an award show recently. he walked on stage looking noticeably thin, as one does when battling cancer, and without skipping a beat he says “bet you never thought you’d see me in skinny jeans” the whole room was in the palm of his hands. you’ll be missed, TK.
Big Kenny Alphin (Big & Rich) – Life is short. So sad to hear of the passing of our friend @tobykeith. He was a superstar performer, legendary songwriter and great American. Prayers and condolences to all his family. He will be missed by many.
Bill Anderson – I never got the chance to know Toby Keith as well as I would have liked to, but I always enjoyed his company and certainly admired his talent. I wish I could have written a song or two with him…he was a great writer as well as performer. This picture was taken in the hallway backstage at the Grand Ole Opry when he made one of his rare appearances there. He gave us a lot of good music and left us with a lot of good memories. May he rest in peace.
Bill Engvall – Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of my friend, Toby Keith. We shared a lot of laughs over the years that I will treasure. I guess “the old man got in”. RIP TK.

BlackHawk – The sad news today of Toby Keith’s passing is heartbreaking. He was a great singer and an incredible songwriter. A true self-styled artist of enormous proportions. Our sincere condolences to his family.
Blake Shelton – Even though I knew about your battle these last few months I still never imagined this day. Anyone who knew you knows what I mean. You were the toughest man I ever met. Thank you brother for being a friend, a hero and an inspiration. There will never be another Toby Keith.
Bobby Braddock – I WANNA TALK ABOUT TOBY: This morning when I turned my phone on, the first thing I saw was a message from my Kentucky friend Debbie Smith that read “Toby Keith went to Heaven.” Just a little over four months ago Toby came to participate in my Kris Kristofferson Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to say a few nice things about me and to sing our big monster hit, “I Wanna Talk About Me.” He looked a little frail but his singing was as great as ever. Toby was not only an amazing singer/entertainer, but he was an unforgettable bigger-than-life character, overflowing with good humor and brimming with self confidence. I was lucky to get a cut by this superstar because he was a great songwriter who wrote most of his own material. He took my song to #1 for five weeks in the country charts and high in the pop charts; and it was considered the first #1 country rap song. He once told me that when somebody would say that “I Wanna Talk About Me” wasn’t a country song, he would tell them: “Don’t tell ME that song’s not country; Bobby Braddock wrote it!” I have fond memories of the night in 2015 that Toby and I were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York – we were the only country songwriters inducted that night, the others were pop and rock writers such as Cyndi Lauper. The night before induction night BMI was having a nice private dinner for that year’s inductees, and Toby was sitting across the table from Linda Perry who wrote Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” Pink’s “Let’s Get the Party Started” and was the writer and singer of 4 Non Blondes’s international hit “What’s Up.” Linda kind of playfully asked him, “Toby, do you have a problem with me being a lesbian?” Toby laughed that big infectuous laugh and said, “Honey, if you ain’t got no problem with me, I ain’t got no problem with you!” On induction night when I was on the stage at the piano singing our hit, there in the audience was this giant of a man in his trademark cowboy hat, standing up, clapping his hands to the music and singing along with me, the spotlight on both of us. I remember at the after-party my daughter, Lauren, was engaged in a long conversation with Toby, and afterwards she said to me, “Wow, what a nice guy!” I say this for all the Toby Keith fans, of which I am one, “We’re gonna miss you Toby.” I wish the big man could have lived a lot longer, but I guess he was bigger than life.

Brantley Gilbert – Woke up to news that Toby Keith had passed…. He was a class act, a friend and one of the most talented guys you’ll ever meet… We’ll miss you down here man… Rest in peace
Bryan White – (1st post) Many prayers for the Keith family this morning.. Such a loss. No words. Rest in peace brother. Boomer Sooner. (2nd post) It’s funny what we recall when we lose somebody. One of my favorite moments with Toby was rehearsal for this performance on the ACMs when it was still in LA. The story is too long to go into, but let’s just say we laughed quite a bit. Toby was a funny dude. This was a great memory paying tribute to our friend Glen Campbell. RIP Toby

Carter’s Chord – TOBY KEITH. He had such an incredible impact on so many lives. He represents a huge chapter in ours. He signed us to our record deal, produced our albums, and brought us out on the road. He took 3 girls who were super green, believed in us, propped us up, and set the course for our career. We are forever grateful for the years we spent with him. He loved music so much. Our hearts to go out to his family, his band, and everyone who is grieving today. We are cherishing the core memories we have in our hearts.
Chancey Williams – I woke up this morning to the news of Toby passing. I can’t hardly believe it. I’m so fortunate that I got to call Toby a friend. I moved to Nashville after college to do an internship and got to work for TK (his manager) as well as work for Toby’s label Showdog. He was such a great man who treated me like family. I have so many stories and memories of spending time with him that I will never forget. Not long ago Mica (Toby’s lifelong background singer) sent him a picture of her and I and he called me his oldest son. That meant the world to me. Rest in peace Toby.
Chapel Hart – Toby was the embodiment of GOD, Family, & Country… and had a way of making you stand up a little taller when singing about (or honoring) our service men and women. We are better country music artists because of the life and legacy of Toby Keith. Rest well, brother, may your music and legacy live on forever!
Charlie Daniels Jr. – It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Toby Keith after 1 1/2 years battling stomach cancer. Prayers to his friends, family and his many fans.
Chase Bryant – I had the honor of doing some touring with Toby some years back. He was a larger than life character. When he walked in a room he could captivate it. It always blew my mind the amount of great songs he had written thru the years. He was prolific, and highly underrated in my mind. Regardless the CountryMusic and Music Industry as a whole took a massive hit with the loss of Toby. Rest easy Toby. You will be missed, but your words will live on forever!

Chely Wright – I’ve been thinking about Toby’s passing all day long. It’s a devastating loss for Tricia and their kids and all the close friends who love this family. I was lucky to know Toby Keith. He and I were the flagship artists on Polydor Nashville / A&M Records back in the early 90’s. He’d had a couple of big hits over on Mercury Records and I was just starting out, so of course I hung on every word he said and I paid close attention to how he went about conducting business. The great Harold Shedd had signed us both to Mercury and sometime in 1993, he took us over to Polydor. We all sort felt like our fates were inextricably linked. The vibe at the label was that of a startup. The team was scrappy, smart, creative and we had something to prove. Harold gave me wise advice one day as Toby was walking out of a room. Harold did a little head tip in Toby’s direction and said, “Follow that guy. He knows what he’s doing.” So I did. Toby modeled some really important behaviors that I did my best to embed into how I handled myself and into my way of working. There’s a lot I can say about his talents as a songwriter and a performer (gifted, prolific and authentic), but I think the thing that has always stood out to me about Toby was that he was a good person. He was generous with his time, thoughtful with his words, purposeful in his actions and true to who he was. Always. Not sometimes, not most of the time, but always. Rest in peace, Toby.“… Sleepin’ out all night beneath the desert stars…With a dream in my eye and a prayer in my heart…”
Chris Janson – It’s a very sad day for all of music, especially Country music. Losing Toby, is like losing a pillar that is not replaceable. He took us on tour right after Boat became a hit. Won’t ever forget that, and will always be very grateful. RIP, Sir. Thank you for the memories.

Cody Alan (CMT) – I love Toby Keith. I will never forget the times we spent. He had the highest respect for country music and songwriting. And what a hit maker! He was always good to me. We had an authentic connection, and appreciated each other’s honesty. For whatever reason, we also had great energy together on camera. He always put me at ease in those CMT interviews, like an old friend would. Or maybe it was the mezcal tequila shot he insisted I drink before every interview?!! Everytime I stepped on his bus, a heavy pour in a red solo cup was indeed ready. When I came out as gay in 2017, Toby wasn’t afraid to show his support, writing “Cody, I admire your courage” proving to me he was fearless in speaking up for what he knew. Yes he was multi-platinum, multi-talented and won all the awards. But mostly the Toby I knew and loved was an honest guy, a real friend and as fun as anyone you’ll ever meet. Rest in peace Big Dawg Daddy. You’re missed.
Cole Swindell – RIP Toby Keith- Tell folks you love them while you can. Life is short..the older I get, the more I realize how true it is.
Collin Raye – My heart is deeply saddened today, at the new of my friend, Toby Keith’s passing. Toby was a good man… a kind man, and a wonderful Artist and Songwriter. Toby stood for good things. He walked into a bar one night in Nashville (approx ‘07) when I had jumped onstage to sing with a couple of friends, and a few months later those friends and I were signed to a record deal on his label and he put us on a tour bus to open up for him all over the country that summer. We recorded albums with him, were in a movie with him, and went on countless tours for many years. And because of him I was able to make so many friends that I still treasure today. Because of him, I have had some of the greatest experiences and made some of the greatest memories of my life. Thank you for taking that chance and making that impact. Truly rest in peace Toby Keith.
Dallas Wayne – Toby Keith was as tough as the oilfields of Oklahoma with the soul of a poet. He fought his battle with cancer with the same toughness, grace, and resolve the same way he approached his craft of songwriting. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Darryl Worley – Toby Keith was his own man. He set a great example for all of us in life and in death. He had one shot at this just like we all do and he did it his way. I paid attention to his life and his career. He had a swagger that was a little different than most because he knew who he was. In life we have a chance to leave a mark that will not fade and he knocked it out of the park. In death we have a chance to exit this awful, beautiful life with grace and dignity. Toby just hit another grand slam and we could learn from this example. Sometimes it’s not about the elaborate production because sometimes the production is simply the actions of the man. God bless you and your family and thank you for showing us all how it’s done.
David Adam Byrnes – I took my first trip to Nashville alone just days after my high school graduation and the first place I went was the Fiddle And Steel Guitar Bar. Toby Keith walked into the bar and I can honestly say I remember it being the first time I was ever star struck. I walked up to introduce myself and he offered me a shot of whiskey and since I was underage he had a shot for the both of us. I was blown away how he took the time to just chat and give advice to this 19 year old kid he didn’t know. It’s a moment I have never forgotten. He was a huge part of my childhood and teenage years musically but I’m even more proud to be part of the “fiddle fam” with him and the rest of the Easy Money band and my condolences to the crew and his family. Fly high TK, I know you and Joey are having a heck of a time being reunited upstairs.

Grand Ole Opry – We loved the times Toby Keith played this stage, including most recently when he visited the Opry House to accept the first-ever People’s Choice Country Icon Award. Toby’s music will live on forever, and we’re remembering alongside his many friends and family. Thank you, Toby.
Granger Smith – Heavy morning with the announcement of losing a pillar in the country music community. I wasn’t expecting that news the same day I announce this news. But the Lord is sovereign and death is a reality we cannot avoid. In fact, it’s not helpful to avoid the conversation about death altogether but instead it’s good to process through death—and what comes afterwards. That’s what my new book is about called ‘Up Toward the Light’. It comes out April 2nd (pre-order now) and I hope it’s an encouragement to you and your children! I’m so grateful for the joy TK’s music brought so many of us for so many years. I hope it was not bad taste for me to announce a new book on this day. #uptowardthelight
Heath Wright (Ricochet) – I knew Toby from back in our Oklahoma nightclub days. He was the leader of the “Easy Money” band, and I remember looking up to him as a band leader even back then. I think the thing I admired most about him is that he did things his own way and made no apologies for it! I’m told that he came out to the last show we performed in Grove, Oklahoma, but had to leave before we came off stage. I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye or tell him how much I’ve looked up to him over the years. I hope he knew. Rest in peace, my Oklahoma brother!
Jack Ingram – Toby Keith was a loyal, faithful and good friend of mine. He stood with his people and his people stood by him. He was controversial at times, hard headed sometimes but always thoughtful and vulnerable. I ALWAYS believed in him even if I didn’t always agree with him. I will always miss him. He took me in. Jackson Dean – It was an honor to have known Toby the little that I did. It was an honor to touch the same stage. I will never forget his wild stories and the kindness he gave to me. Journey well, Legend.
James Otto – Completely heartbroken waking up to the news of Toby Keith passing. I thought he was on the mend. I was blessed to do the entire American Ride tour with Toby and Trace and will never forget the experience. James Robert Webb – 90s country superstar and fellow Oklahoman Toby Keith passed away last night. So much more than an artist he was—hard to say “was”—a GOAT songwriter who will always be a songwriting hero of mine. A great melody writer. Steely Dan like modulations in songs like Whiskey Girl and what I’ve had co-writers say are “too many key changes” were part of that left of center trademark style that we share with another Okie, Roger Miller. @tobykeith and @brooksanddunn single handedly got me back into country with their great country-roots rock & blues music. As an artist, I’ve opened most of my shows over the last decade with Should Have Been A Cowboy. I remember who’s Your Daddy coming out around the time our first daughter was born. Josh Abbott – October 2018, I was at Rodney Carrington’s bday celebration in Oklahoma. His good friend Toby Keith showed up. When we met, the only thing he wanted to talk about was: why the disconnect between Texas country and him? He felt it was unfair and we had a great conversation about it. And you know, he was right. Our genre, myself included, labeled him as “cheesy.” But he was right. He was Willie Nelson’s guy. He played Floores & Gruene. He played Willie’s picnic. He loved the Texas side of things. He wrote his own songs and damn did he have some great ones. And he was tough as hell. I apologized to him for anything I might’ve said that was unfair and immature. Honestly I had wanted to anyway. But having that conversation was a real honest moment I won’t forget. Pretty sure a hug was involved and he genuinely appreciated the convo. I did too. Richard Young (Kentucky Headhunters) – I met Toby for the first time when Mercury Records president Harold Shedd asked me to attend a showcase for Toby and two other acts he had just signed to the label. Toby had a great sense of humor and through the years would show up at our shows out of the blue and jump on-stage with us to sing ‘Dumas Walker!’ He just loved to surprise people and have fun. I especially remember one time in New York City, which was about as far from Oklahoma and Kentucky as you can get, we were playing the Lone Star Roadhouse. And out nowhere, here comes Toby out of the audience and jumped on-stage! I always loved the fact that he was a country act but was not afraid to add a horn section to his songs and live show. He broke a few rules but made certain things were OK for those who came after him.

The Country Music community is mourning the loss of a true American Treasure today as Grand Ole Opry member and Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels passed away this morning in Hermitage, TN due to a hemorrhagic stroke. The multi-instrumentalist is best known for his fiddle playing, patriotism, generosity, and of course his iconic hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

His career spanned several decades and dabbled in multiple genres including Bluegrass, Gospel, and Blues, but he is best known for his contributions to Southern Rock and Country Music. The North Carolina native started off as a songwriter and session musician playing for artists such as Bob Dylan and Ringo Starr before stepping out on his own in 1971.

In addition to his Opry membership (2008) and Country Music Hall of Fame induction (2016), he was also inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2009. He would also add Grammy winner, actor, and several other awards and recognitions to his well-rounded resume.

His catalog boasts five Top 10 albums, four Platinum albums, three Gold albums, and seventeen Top 40 singles. Despite his musical contributions, his biggest impact on the world may be his charitable efforts headlined by the Volunteer Jam, a recurring event that dates back to 1974. He also wasn’t afraid to speak his mind about politics and current events, as his series of “Soapbox” blog posts prove.

Daniels was one of the best follows on Twitter, having his daily routine of tweets. Each morning, he would fire off a series of tweets starting with a “Daily Bible Verse,” followed by a “Let’s Make the Day Count” motivational thought, a “Pray for the Blue” reminder, a reminder of how many babies are aborted each day (125,000), a reminder that “Benghazi ain’t going away,” a reminder that “22 veterans commit suicide each day,” and a reminder to “remember 9/11.” He would then later end the night with a “Guess I’ll hang it up for tonight, Goodnight planet earth-God bless” tweet. Our affiliate in South Florida had the opportunity to interview him in 2016 in advance of a show he played, and his generosity and thoughtfulness were on full display as he gave great answers to our questions. His presence as an American Icon and Patriot will be sorely missed.

Bill Anderson – Charlie was a big ol’ teddy bear…one of the kindest, gentlest people I’ve ever known…with a wonderful sense of humor and a great outlook on life. I’ve played golf with him, shared the Opry stage with him, sat alongside him at the Titans football games, and always marveled at his talent and his tenacity. There’s a big ol’ hole in lots of our hearts today with the news of his passing.
Billy Dean – Charlie Daniels was the John Wayne of Southern Rock, Rhythm and Blues. He always put the love of playing music above the business of music. And one more thing, he loved America!
Billy Ray Cyrus – This Legend, Charlie Daniels, was at the core of my roots and influences in music. We recorded “Just As I Am” together for his Gospel Album. “Oh lamb of God I come…I come,” sings the hymn. An honor to call him my friend. Fiddle is gonna be roaring in heaven tonight! #RIP
Blake Shelton – Just when I thought 2020 couldn’t break my heart anymore… Charlie Daniels you will always be an American hero. Rest In Peace sir.
Bobby Bare – Charlie’s been like a brother to me since the early ’70s. He’s one of the greatest, kindest people I’d ever met in my life. Not only Charlie – but he surrounded himself with incredible people that I love, especially his wife Hazel. We did a duet of a song Charlie wrote called ‘Willie Jones’ and it was one of the most fun studio sessions I’ve been in. I’ve always loved playing Volunteer Jams through the years – I will miss my dear friend
Brad Paisley – I wrote these words for Charlie’s biography. They ring even more true now.I’m so sad he’s gone. But I know he had no doubt about where he was going when this life was over. We have so many memories together, and I am so blessed to have known him. He beat the devil with his fiddle, and I’m sure he’s opening up his case and rosining up his bow now to play for the Lord. Rest In Peace my friend. We love you.
Brandon Rhyder – I had the pleasure of opening up for Charlie Daniels a few years back at a festival in Texas. We sat down in the green room and talked for the better part of an hour. He signed some pics for me and took pictures too. I sat on the edge of the stage that night and watched Charlie and his band absolutely kill it like it was 1973. He was a kind man to say the least. A pioneer, artist, instrumentalist & outspoken voice for many great causes. I will never forget him or that night. RIP sir. We’re going to miss you.

I feel very honored to have re-recorded “Long Haired Country Boy” with my band The Rockin CJB before Mr. Daniels passing; I was able to hear that he had listened to the track, and gave it his stamp of approval. “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” from the 1980 Full Moon album was quite possibly one of the first Rock sounds I heard aside from Elvis and Ronnie Van Zandt, and, it shaped me forever. Rest Peacefully Mr. Daniels; thank you for what you gave to us all while you were here.
Collin Raye – Deeply saddened by the news today of Charlie Daniels’ passing. Charlie Daniels was a true patriot, a man of God and a great American. To call him a musical icon is a gross understatement. A pioneer in the southern rock movement of the 70s, leading the Charlie Daniels Band, his bold and musically impressive songwriting, spawning legendary hits like ‘The South’s Gonna Do it Again,’ ‘Long Haired Country Boy,’ ‘In America,’ and, of course, ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia,’ and many, many others that have already stood the test of time as some of the greatest, most iconic records in the history of rock-n-roll AND country music. Our industry has a huge void in it today. A great man of principal, honor, integrity and faith, who always told it like it is. There will never ever be another Charlie Daniels. Confederate Railroad – Confederate Railroad sends our deepest condolences to Hazel, Charlie Jr, all the members of the Charlie Daniels Band and his many fans. Charlie Daniels was not only a star, member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and American Patriot, he was and will always be a legend. Being that he is somebody we look up to, from Wilmington NC and my brother and I have lived there for 20yrs, we of course said yes and walked over to his bus. Charlie, his wife, Tom and I sat just the 4 of us laughing and having a great convo about life/tour and Wilmington NC for a good while. He was one of the nicest/down to Earth guys I’ve ever met and I’ll never forget that day. Right before we were about to get back on our bus say goodbyes, and head out to our next show he said “well we better take a picture, it’s not often I run into brothers from Wilmington out here on the road!” This photo is that moment on his bus. Jeremy Westby – I had the pleasure of representing Charlie Daniels and his charity The Journey Home Project for many years. He headlined a concert at the Air Force Academy back in 1998 when I was road managing the opening act – the Clark Family Experience – who were managed by Jim and Sherman Halsey. I’ll never forget how Charlie could shred that bow and keep the audience at the edge of their seats. I didn’t have the pleasure of talking to him then but as the years passed and my career came full-circle, I did – and then some. Charlie was much more than a client. He welcomed me and my family into his home on holidays, we had media junkets to New York and more wonderful experiences than I can count. To say he leaves an indelible mark on our community is an absolute understatement. I will forever cherish the moments we had, and being part of the team to help guide his induction to the Country Music Hall of Fame will never be forgotten! My heart goes out to Hazel, David, Bebe, Paula, Angela, Charlie Jr. and the rest of The CDB. Love to you all.

Little Texas – Today we mourn the passing of our dear friend and mentor, Charles Edward Daniels. Few have made Little Texas such a part of their family, and we will miss him terribly. Our prayers go out to Hazel, Charlie Jr. and the Charlie Daniels Band members and crew during this sad, sad time.
Loretta Lynn – Country music will never be the same. Charlie was a heck of an artist. I can’t even begin to count the number of times we worked together. He was so much fun! He was always such a good friend to me and I loved him. We’re all going to miss him so much.

Paige King Johnson – It truly breaks my heart to hear of the passing of Mr. Charlie Daniels. As a fellow NC native, he was included in the soundtrack of nearly every road trip, bonfire night, and any other occasion! He was an extraordinary musician and such a joy to watch onstage – his spirit for music and performing was truly incredible! His family are in my thoughts and prayers during this hard time. Ray Benson – We lost our pal Charlie Daniels. I met Charlie in 1972 in San Fran at The Keystone Corner we played a double bill with his new band tickets were $1 and Freddies mom made free Spaghetti! I’ll cherish the time we had together. My Love to Hazel family band crew RIP friend!
Ray Scott – Charlie Daniels was a big influence to me… a huge hero… I was a young artist writer in town in the late 90’s trying to find my voice.. I wrote a recitational song called Plowboy that ended up getting me a record deal.. I owe that to this man… He inspired me to do something different that stood out.. I’ve always credited him for that…I was lucky enough to do a few shows as his opener as well.. cherished memories.. Charlie was a true American patriot and an Icon who cared deeply about this country… and he was a badass… May God bless Charlie Daniels… and may he rest in peace…

Rodney Atkins – When I was 5 years old my parents asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up….I said “how do you be Charlie Daniels”….no one could be Charlie but Charlie. He’s one of the best humans I had the honor of knowing. Love and prayers to the Daniels family.
Ronnie Milsap – Charlie Daniels embodied the fire of the South. He blurred lines between rock and country, when rock didn’t think country was cool, and his Volunteer Jams weren’t just legendary, they brought people from both of those worlds together. He was a patriot, a proud American, a world class musician, an incredible showman, as well as a wonderful father, husband, grandpa and friend. We’re all so sad to lose him, but if I know Charlie, he’s up in heaven, rosining up his bow and getting ready to let those fingers fly! Godspeed, my friend, you’re home.
Sam Moore – One of the best friends, not only a peer, but a true friend. He was one of the most spiritual men. When we got together for a show in Oklahoma, we performed ‘Will The Circle be Unbroken.’ I never will forget that night.
Sammy Kershaw – The music community has lost one of its greatest American icons today. Charlie Daniels is one of those artists whose music will never die. He was also one of the nicest people I have ever met in my life and also a great Patriot. God bless him. Charlie Daniels was statue material.

Sawyer Brown – It’s hard to know where to begin talking about Charlie. Maybe it should be the first time we met him, when he walked over to the bus, introduced himself (as if we weren’t already in awe of him) and told us he enjoyed our show—leaving us speechless—and when we called him Mr. Daniels, he told us, “Boys, just call me Charlie. We’re friends now.” Or the second time we ever worked with him, and he hopped up on the bus at about 7:00 AM and said, “Mark Miller, get up, son—we’re going golfing.” Or the time we were scheduled to do a weekend of shows with Reba McEntire but her band was tragically lost in the plane crash a few days before and Charlie called us and said, “Boys, I’ll fly in and do the show with y’all, if you don’t mind backing me up.” Mind?! We told him that when we started out playing clubs, half of our set was CDB music—so we’d already been in training. It was such a thrill to get to share the stage with him that night—and every night we ever got to do a show with Charlie. And there were a lot of shows over the years. There was never a show we played with Charlie that we didn’t say, “We need to more of these!” And while I loved every minute of those shows, I really treasure all those times we got to visit and talk about books and music and life on the road. I was like a kid getting to go his favorite relative’s house every time we worked with Charlie. I’d make a beeline for his bus, give him and Mrs. Hazel a hug, and the visiting would commence. When we first started out, people would ask what kind of career we wanted to have, and we’d point to the Charlie Daniels Band, and say, “That. That kind of timeless music. That kind of no-holds-barred stage show. That kind of longevity.” But as much as Charlie exemplified all of that, he was also a good man. A true gentleman. (Who was one of the first people Mark heard from when Madison was born? Yep, it was Charlie.) A true friend. At the end of every visit, Charlie would give me a hug and say, “Love you, son.” I have no doubt where you are right now, Charlie—so I know we will see you again. And since we already know the songs, save us a place on the bandstand. We love you, Charlie. Mrs. Hazel, Charlie Jr. and the whole CDB family—we are keeping you in our prayers.
Scooter Brown – I grew up listening to Charlie Daniels. I never thought back then that he would become a friend and a mentor. He is the definition of ‘Salt of the Earth.’ His music touched millions, his kindness was always felt and his patriotism was second to none. Swon Brothers – Heard the news about Charlie this morning. This is a sad day. He was one of the sweetest coolest guys we’ve met in this business. We have played quite a few shows with The Charlie Daniels Band
and it was always the most memorable and enjoyable times. One time in particular the show was on hold due to storms so Charlie invited us on his bus to chat. His stories about the road and this business are unmatchable. The storm turned into a tornado and our bands and crews were told to gather in a bathroom of a gymnasium. Although a bit scary, that is one of the nights on the road that I’ll never forget. We all sang songs together with the natural reverb of the gym and the bathroom. Then sat in folding chairs talking until the storm passed. Not only was he a legend for country music, but a legend of a man. He told us about his mistakes, corrections, and his love for God. Rest In Peace CD… we will all miss ya and will see you again.
T.G. Sheppard – Charlie was one of the most talented, kindest, patriotic and spiritual people I’ve ever had the pleasure of calling a friend. Whether I was doing shows with him from the Opry stage or on a stage in far away Japan, he always remained the consummate performer. Tanya Tucker – Charlie Daniels was someone you could lean on at any time or ask his advice. Teddy Gentry (Alabama) – From the eighties until last year, I’ve had the pleasure of not only touring with but getting to know Charlie Daniels. He was everything on stage a great artist should be. But it was the off stage Charlie I grew to love over the years. Many times Charlie would answer the call to do charity work and never charge a cent. He set a humble example of what a man, a friend, and Christian should be by the way he treated others. I’m gonna miss you my friend.
Terri Clark – One of the kindest men I’ve ever met. I’ll never forget this first time I met him in person many years ago, and he asked me what size hat I wore… magically a Charlie Daniels signature cowboy hat showed up with my name inside it. A legend, man of faith and proud American. I don’t think it’s purely a coincidence that he went to heaven right around “Independence Day”. The Cadillac Three – Charlie was the coolest of the cool. A genuine talent and the nicest guy you ever met. He was so positive and encouraging, always told us to just keep on doin’ what we we’re doin’. We’ll miss ya Charlie.
The Henningsons – I just heard that Charlie passed away. He was a great American and a wonderful Human being. We played at the Grand Ol Opry with him and he came and visited us in our dressing room. Had a great conversation with one of my heroes.

Tim Atwood – Charlie Daniels was a music icon, yet every time I played piano for Charlie he made me feel like I was part of the Charlie Daniels’ family. He loved our country and devoted much of his time to encouraging and performing for our men and women in uniform. When my son Torre was in the Army, and he was about to ship out for his first tour in Iraq, Charlie met with Torre before he left, and he prayed with him. You have no idea what that meant to me. The devil can stay down in Georgia for all I care, because Charlie Daniels is heaven bound!
Tim McGraw – Oh man, sad to hear about Charlie Daniels passing…I grew up on his music… brilliant songs and smokin’ records. And always, without fail, every time I had the pleasure of being around him, he was one of most genuine, kind and thoughtful folks I’ve ever run across. The word “legend” gets tossed around so easily these days, but not in this case… he was #BeyondLegendary.
Toby Keith – Charlie Daniels was part of my very first music collection. And a great guy. He showed us how it’s done. RIP superstar.

Vince Gill – I first met Charlie Daniels in 1976, and then when I was touring as part of Pure Prairie League, we opened a bunch of shows for him. I made a great friend in Charlie, and we’ve remained friends for over 40 years — that’s hard to do. He was a great example of loyalty and I’ll miss him.
Vonn Kiss – A pioneer that stood for so many great things outside of music, a true patriot. He taught us all what a fiddle truly was while never being afraid to voice his opinion. He’s going to be deeply missed but his legacy will no doubt live on. Prayers and thoughts are with his family, friends and fans.
Wade Bowen – Charlie Daniels played @BowenMusicfest years ago and my exact words to him were “Mr. Daniels you are the nicest artist we’ve ever had!” We had a good long visit & it could not have been a better experience or a better show. He was fantastic on every level. I will never forget that. He even gave us some love on his socials the next day about all the good we are trying to do around Waco with @BowenFoundation. Thank you Charlie for being the bad ass you are. We will all miss you dearly! Godspeed.
Wynonna Judd – Getting to open for Mr. Charlie was one of my very first memorable moments in country music. He’s an important part of my story. When Mom & I opened for Mr. Charlie in the 80’s, I was so young, so naive, and in awe of my heroes and sheroes in country music. I spent most of my time trying to talk to, hang out with and learn everything I could from the artists we played shows with. Mr. Charlie was always so kind to me. He always made me feel so important. His heart. Oh my. His passion for God and his country, it really was what made him such a gifted soul. I adore him!! He’d come over to me in a crowded room to hug me. He always made time for me and I respect him so much for the way he treated me and so many others in the room. During one of our moments backstage before a show, I was talking to Mr. Charlie about how nervous I was being onstage. He told me to “Never look at the empty seats.” I have not forgotten his words to me. Charlie Daniels is a maverick. His heart is bigger than most. He lived and he loved large!!!!! Thank you for your service to our great country sir. I love you so

Country star and Grand Ole Opry member Joe Diffie has passed away at the age of 61. This news comes two days after it was announced that he was diagnosed with COVID-19, which ultimately led to his passing.

Diffie came onto the scene in 1990, scoring a #1 hit with his debut single “Home” after first coming to Nashville as a demo singer in the 1980’s. His first six singles reached the top 5, and he went on to have seventeen top-10 hits. His #1 hits also included “If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets),” “Third Rock From The Sun,” “Pickup Man,” and “Bigger Than The Beatles.” His last top-40 single, “Tougher Than Nails,” peaked at #19 on the charts in 2004. He won an ACM Award along with George Jones for “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair” and a GRAMMY for his collaboration with Marty Stuart, “Same Old Train.”

Diffie was still actively recording and touring up until the time the country was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic and his following diagnosis, and had just recently cancelled his March 21st show in Tifton, GA. He leaves behind a wife and five children. His family has asked for privacy during this time.

We had the chance to meet up with Diffie in Nashville in 2013 during CMA Fest for this interview, and photographed his shows in Florida in 2009 and 2013. He was one of the nicest artists we’ve had the pleasure of meeting and was always a must-see anytime he came into town for a gig.

Diffie’s passing is the third blow in nine days to the country music world, having lost Kenny Rogers last Friday night and Jan Howard yesterday.

Bill Anderson – What a sad weekend for our country music and Grand Ole Opry families with the passing of Jan Howard and now Joe Diffie. Joe was a great singer…his record of “Ships That Don’t Come In” is one of my all-time favorite performances. I always knew when I introduced him at the Opry that the fans were about to be well entertained. Joe will certainly be missed.

Bill Engvall part 2: Tonite I sit here with tears in my eyes as I listen to my friend Joe Diffie. I am toasting him with a Crown Royal. Why you might ask, I first met Joe on the Crown Royal Country tour. We toured together and had a lot of laughs. We also had the occasion to have some real heart to heart talks. The kind of talks where you really get to know the person. One night we were on his bus going through New York City it was just Joe and I, we talked til 4 in the morning. Joe was the kind of friend that it didn’t matter how much time had passed since the last time you saw them, the conversation picked up as if you saw them yesterday. I am so sad for his family and everyone that ever knew him. Joe always made you feel as you were the most important person in the room. While we lost a great man,the choir in heaven has gained one of the best voices around and the angels song just got a lot sweeter. I will miss you my friend but we will see each other again. RIP Joe.
Billy Dean – I don’t really know if people realize how great a singer Joe Diffie was. We were buddies before we ever had our record deals. He had a great sense humor. He proved that to me when he recorded a funny tune I wrote called ‘Good Brown Gravy’ and invited me to sing on the record with him. Joe Diffie set the standard for our Country sound back in the 90’s. He was just a regular Joe, as he would put it, but he also will go down in history as one of the greats, I do believe.

Heidi Newfield – There are voices that come along and catch our attention…and then there are VOICES that come along and capture our hearts forever more. We lost one of the greatest Country voices of ALL time today!! Joe Diffie was special in every way! His vocal range was absolutely massive…. like those lungs were unreal. His tone was as rich as the OK dirt he was raised in. His heart was as warm as the comfy front lounge of his bus where he’d proudly serve up his homemade craft brews and shared stories of life, love, and the road. Joe was real, and that resonated with all of us from his peers, to family, to friends, to his millions of fans alike. Joe made me want to be a better singer without a doubt. I’d sit on the side of the stage and wait for Ships That Don’t Come In or White Lightenin’. Anything that came out of his mouth was stylistic AND mechanically perfect. You usually don’t get to have both qualities, but Joe did.
I’m humbled and honored to have called him my buddy and my heart breaks for his wife Tara, his beautiful kids, and big extended family as well. “One take Joe” came on in here and made us all feel special for awhile…now, he’s leading the choir of heavenly honky tonk angels! He made one hell of a mark….

Terry McBride – I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Joe Diffie’s passing. I was fortunate to get to know Joe and tour with him in the 90’s. I always enjoyed hearing him hit the big notes on those classic ballads. He was such a strong singer. I recently came across some old footage of us cutting up during a TV taping. His pronunciation and country vibes were amazing, but he backed that up with a voice that could belt out a song like a tenor doing a duet with Pavarotti, that’s what made him truly one of the best singers I’ve ever heard. Joe was so fun and a blast to hang with at all times and he made me laugh. I will miss my friend and salute him by cranking “Ships That Don’t Come In” till I go to sleep tonight. Rest in Heaven brother and sing one when you’re ready, they’re gonna love you!

Trisha Yearwood -I met Joe Diffie when I moved to Nashville in the mid-80’s. I started getting called to do a lot of session work, demos for publishers and writers who were pitching songs, trying to get them recorded by the A-list artists like Reba McEntire and George Strait. It’s how I ended up meeting so many great writers, and it’s how I met other up and coming artists that were doing the same thing. It’s how I met Joe. We’d pass each other in the halls of Sony Publishing, or run into each other at Studio 19 or County Q. More than likely if we saw each other, it was because we were singing a duet together for one of the publishers in town. I loved those sessions. Joe’s voice was always so pure and just…on. He never missed a note. Ever. Fast forward to both of us getting recording contracts and touring the world. We ran into each other on the road too, and even did a few shows together along the way. I was always a fan, and wasn’t surprised to see him succeed in country music. His voice was always undeniable. I saw Joe last year at an event at the Grand Ole Opry. We talked for a brief time and exchanged all the pleasantries about life, kids, and the road. We said what so many of us say… ”We should get together one of these days” and both meant it. You never think the last time you see someone is going to be the last time you see them. My heart is broken today for Joe’s family and friends, and for all the fans who love his music. Bobby Bare – Kenny Rogers was one of the greatest, I’ve been thinking about him all day since I heard the sad news. When we went into Hall of Fame together, truth is, I thought he was already in! To be inducted alongside him made it that much more of an honor. ‘The Gamber’ is a great story song, so well written, and Kenny had an ear for really great songs. He had a magic voice, instantly recognizable. I will miss my friend.
Mickey Gilley – Kenny Rogers was a dear friend of mine. I worked with him back in 1959 in a recording studio in Houston, Texas. He was working with a jazz group known as the Bobby Doyle Trio at the time. A lot of folks didn’t know this, but Kenny played the upright bass on my first song that charted in Houston. And I loved that voice! Many years later as a fledgling entertainer, I got to open for him and watch a true master at work. A dream come true was getting to sing with him. Totally unreal. Another special moment was having Kenny Rogers, the photographer, take one of my favorite portraits of dad and I. Ever. A true renaissance man. Kenny, thank you for a lifetime of music and memories. Bill Anderson – The world has lost a great artist and interpreter of songs. I had the honor of announcing his election to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and was thrilled when I realized how much it meant to him. Even after all the other honors he had won, he was truly excited about this one. His accomplishments will live forever.
Billy Ray Cyrus – No one bridged the gap between country and pop more often and better than K R. He will be missed but his music and diverse style of story-telling will live on forever.
David Bellamy (Bellamy Brothers) – Going back to the late 70s and early 80s, we played a lot of dates together. He was one of the first artists to have a stage in the round, in the middle of the arena. He was also an accomplished photographer, and he shot some portraits of Howard and me. We really got to know Kenny through the years and are thankful for the memories. Love and prayers to his family.
Gene Watson – I had so much respect for Kenny Rogers – he was from Houston, Texas too. He was a truly unique vocalist and artist who easily transitioned from a group (First Edition), a duo, solo artist and actor. If he did it, it was the best.
Naomi Judd – Kenny Rogers was a dear family friend and he was one of the kindest, nicest guys. A true gentleman. I had the privilege sharing the stage with him as well as on screen, in the film Rio Diablo. The Judds were honored to celebrate him a few years ago during his tribute concert. Rest In Peace, Kenny. We love you.
Phil Vassar – Not just my hero, but my friend. Thank you for your guidance my brother. The world has lost the greatest storyteller.

Tim McGraw – l loved Kenny Rogers. My mom really loved Kenny…she took me outta school (7th grade or so) and dropped me at Monroe Civic Center to stand in line for tickets to his concert. I stood in line all day and got to the window just as last 2 tickets were sold. Years later in college, I was working at the Civic Center selling popcorn up and down the aisles and got to see him. Still one of my favorites of all time….my mom still loves him. Love ya Kenny, my man. Sending love to Kenny’s family.
Suzy Bogguss – Before I knew I’d have the chance to live my dream I would watch Kenny Rogers with Johnny Carson and he’d pull a guitar from behind the couch and delight the audience with a perfect acoustic performance. Lee Greenwood – I have known Kenny Rogers for as long as I can remember. I first saw him when I arrived in Las Vegas at 17 years old. He was playing standup bass and singing behind the Kirby Stone Four at the Thunderbird Hotel. The second time was at the Flamingo when he returned with his own band, “the First Edition”. I had no idea at the time that he would become such an important person in my life. After many years in Nevada, my career finally took off in Nashville. I began writing at MCA music and recording at MCA records. My first assignment was to write a song for Kenny. “A Love Song” was scheduled to be on my first album, but MCA Music sent it to Kenny. He recorded it, and it went number one all around the world at the same time – it was my first hit as a writer and it changed my life in many ways! A few years later I would have the honor of touring with Kenny and opening for him across America and Canada. I found him to be the most caring, artistic, and genuine person I had ever known. He was always kind, encouraging, and fun to be with. His voice was magic and his performance on stage was powerful and dynamic. Thank you Kenny Rogers for being a friend to me. I’m a fan like the millions who loved you. I am blessed to have known and created music for you, my friend who I admired so much! He was an icon that thrilled millions around the world, and our hearts are broken by the news of his passing.
