Sad news to report, as we’ve gotten the below press release announcing the passing of Kris Kristofferson.  Scroll down to the bottom to see what his peers are saying in remembrance of his passing:

Artist, singer, songwriter, actor and activist Kris Kristofferson passed away peacefully in his home in Maui, Hawaii Saturday, September 28, surrounded by family. He was 88 years old.

Born Kristoffer Kristofferson in the border town of Brownsville, Texas on June 22, 1936, Kristofferson changed the language of country music, with extraordinary internal rhymes, Shakespearean iambic pentameter, and socially progressive subject matter that found the personal within the political.

He was a Rhodes Scholar in Oxford, a defensive back, a bartender, a Golden Gloves boxer, a gandy dancer, a forest firefighter, a road crew member, and an Army Ranger who flew helicopters. He was a peacenik, a revolutionary, an actor, a superstar, a sex symbol, and a family man. He was commissioned to teach English at West Point, though he gave that up to become a Nashville songwriting bum.

Sam Peckinpah cast him as Billy the Kid. Willie Nelson recorded an entire album of his songs, then joined him in supergroup The Highwaymen, with Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Muhammad Ali sat side-stage at his concerts. Mama Cass Elliot called him “No Eyes.” Atlantic Monthly published his short stories.

He believed that songwriting is a spiritual communion of mind, body, and soul, and he believed that William Blake was correct in asserting that anyone divinely ordered for spiritual communion but buries his talent will be pursued by sorrow and desperation through life and by shame and confusion for eternity.

“(Blake) is telling you that you’ll be miserable if you don’t do what you’re supposed to do,” Kristofferson said in the Ken Burns’ documentary Country Music.

Kristofferson’s devotion to spiritual communion brought much in the way of sorrow, desperation, and misery, but it led to triumph.

His work ethic was evident from an early age, celebrated by his parents and, when he was a teenager, a construction supervisor on Wake Island said he was the best worker on the construction crew.

“I took pride in being the best laborer, the guy that could dig the ditches the fastest,” he said. “Something inside me made me want to do the tough stuff . . . Part of it was that I wanted to be a writer, and I figured that I had to get out and live. I know that’s why I ran in front of the bulls in Pamplona.”

The son of a major general and a philanthropic mother, Kristofferson spent his childhood learning lessons in honor and civility, though he arrived at different notions of these things than did his parents. He graduated high school in San Mateo, California, in 1954, then attended Pomona College, where he played football (“I was pretty slow, but I was small,” he said) and studied writing under Dr. Frederick Sontag, who pushed him to apply for a Rhodes scholarship. At Oxford, he wrote stories and examined the works of William Blake.

Kristofferson earned his master’s from Oxford in 1960, then returned to California, married his high school sweetheart, joined the Army, and learned to fly helicopters. In the Army, he wrote funny songs inspired by Hank Williams, until he fell under the sway of folk maestro Bob Dylan.

“The direction Dylan was pointing in made it a respectable ambition, a respectable thing to do,” Kristofferson said.

The Army assigned Kristofferson to teach literature at West Point, a duty that frightened him once he found that he’d have to turn in lesson plans, explaining to superiors exactly what he’d be teaching in class. He said, “It sounded like hell to me.”

And so, in 1965, he came to Nashville to visit with Marijohn Wilkin, the songwriter of “Long Black Veil” and a relation of Kristofferson’s Army platoon leader. On Kristofferson’s first Nashville night, he met Cowboy Jack Clement, a renegade creative who would become a lifelong friend. Soon after that, Wilkin helped Kristofferson get a backstage pass to the Grand Ole Opry, where he met a pacing panther named Johnny Cash. In less than two Music City weeks, Kristofferson decided to resign his Army post and move to Nashville to write songs. Soon after, he met successful songwriter Tom T. Hall in a Nashville bar. Kristofferson introduced himself to Hall, who said “Good to see you . . . It’s a hairy-legged town.”

Kristofferson scuffled for more than four years in Nashville, entering his 30s as what his parents considered a ne’er do well who was dragging down the family name. He worked as a janitor at CBS’s Nashville studio, happy to empty trash cans and make coffee in exchange for access to recording sessions by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and others. He rode around on a well-bruised Honda motorcycle, and neglected family matters in ways that came to haunt him and that doomed his first marriage. He was heartened by praise from the people whom he hoped would become peers. When his “From the Bottle to the Bottom” was recorded by Grand Ole Opry star Billy Walker in 1969, Tom T. Hall said, “God, that’s a great song” and quoted lines back to the fledgling talent.

“That kind of thing was enough to keep me going back then,” Kristofferson said.

After more than four years in songwriting purgatory, things began to roll Kristofferson’s way. Ray Stevens recorded his “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” and Johnny Cash recorded the same song and took it to the top of the country charts. Cash performed “Sunday Mornin'” on his ABC television show, and, despite the cries of network censors, refused to change Kristofferson’s line “Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned” to “Wishing, Lord, that I was home.” That song was voted the Country Music Association’s song of the year in 1970.

Roger Miller, one of Kristofferson’s songwriting heroes, recorded “Me and Bobby McGee,” a song inspired by publisher and Monument Records boss Fred Foster’s suggestion that a song should be written about Foster’s secretary, Bobby McKee. And Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times” was recorded by the great Ray Price and became a No. 1 country hit.

After arguing with Foster about his validity as a recording artist (Kristofferson said, “I sing like a fucking frog,” to which Foster replied, “Yes, but like a frog that can communicate.”), Kristofferson’s first solo album came out in April of 1970. It contained now-classics including “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” “To Beat the Devil,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “Just the Other Side of Nowhere,” “Darby’s Castle,” and “Best of All Possible Worlds.” It began with “Blame It On the Stones,” a song that opened with the decidedly non-traditional line, “Mr. Marvin Middle Class is really in a stew/ Wonderin’ what the younger generation’s coming to.”

With that debut album, Kristofferson emerged as a luminous figure whose fame expanded far beyond country music. Janis Joplin recorded “Me and Bobby McGee,” which became her signature hit. And Kristofferson became a counter-culture darling, beloved by artists and listeners who had never before paid attention to country music.

“You can look at Nashville pre-Kris and post-Kris, because he changed everything,” said Bob Dylan.

Kristofferson’s second album, The Silver Tongued Devil and I, came out on Monument Records in 1971 and contained “The Pilgrim – Chapter 33,” a song he claimed to write about friends Cash, Chris Gantry, Funky Donnie Fritts, and others but later admitted was mostly about himself. “He’s a walkin’ contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,” he sang. “Taking every wrong direction on his lonely way back home.”

All those wrong directions led to some spectacular locales. In 1971, Kristofferson began a side career as an actor. He would go on to win a Golden Globe award for his role in A Star Is Born, and to act in numerous films including Semi-Tough, Songwriter, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, Lone Star, and Blade. He toured the world with his band and with Rita Coolidge, his wife from 1973 until 1980. He moved from Nashville to California. And he released seven solo albums between 1972 and 1979.

This flurry of activity and the accompanying celebrity did not ease Kristofferson’s mind, which was prone to depression, or his problematic drinking habit. The heady years of grand success proved to be some of the most difficult of his life.

“The darkness is driving me farther away from the shore/ Throw me a rhyme or a reason to try to go on,” he wrote and sang in “Shipwrecked in the 80s.” He found rhyme and reason in the graceful form of Lisa Meyers, who married Kristofferson in 1983 and helped him get his life under control. The couple would have five children together.

In 1985, Kristofferson joined Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson to form the supergroup now called The Highwaymen. The group returned Kristofferson’s voice to radio, provided a larger audience for him to relay his critical and sometimes controversial views on American foreign policy, and offered him great joy.

“Every time I look at a picture of Willie and me and John and Waylon, I find it amazing that they let the janitor in there,” he told journalist Mikal Gilmore.

After two roundly ignored solo albums for Mercury Records, Repossessed and Third World Warrior, Kristofferson began working with producer Don Was in 1995. Their creative partnership proved fruitful, with Was’ restrained production allowing the gristly character in Kristofferson’s voice to be heard to full effect, and with Kristofferson writing pensive, eloquent songs that rank with his finest works. “It’s about making sense of life at this end of the game,” Kristofferson said about his 2009 Closer to the Bone album, and that comment also applies to Was-produced works A Moment of Forever (2006), This Old Road (2009), and Feeling Mortal (2013). On his 80^th birthday in 2016, Kris released The Cedar Creek Sessions, which was nominated for a Grammy for best Americana Album six months later.

Until the pandemic in 2020, Kristofferson toured incessantly in the 21st century, a quiet man in worn brown boots, commanding stages with only his guitar and harmonica for accompaniment. His Gibson acoustic might go out of tune . . . no matter. In his final years he performed with Merle Haggard’s band, The Strangers.

In 2003, Kristofferson received the Free Speech Award from the Americana Music Association and in 2004 he became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Since then, he received lifetime achievement honors from BMI, The Recording Academy, the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, among many others.

“When I got started, I was one of the people hoping to bring respect to country music,” he said. “Some of the songs I had that got to be hits did that. I imagine that’s why somebody might vote me into a Hall of Fame. I know it’s not because of my golden throat.”

On the back cover of The Silver Tongued Devil and I, Kristofferson advised that his songs were “Echoes of the going ups and coming downs, walking pneumonia and run-of-the-mill madness, colored with guilt, pride, and a vague sense of despair.”

Sometimes divine communion, then, is holy hell. Kristofferson brought some of that hell on himself, and he lived through times when guilt and despair were anything but vague, and when pride was hard to conjure. Asked about regrets, he said, “Listen, I have those. But my life has turned out so well for me that I would be afraid to change anything.”

Kristofferson’s survived by his wife, Lisa; eight children, Tracy, Kris Jr., Casey, Jesse, Jody, John, Kelly, and Blake; and seven grandchildren, who offer the following consolatory statement:

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28 at home. • Jimmy Wayne – I’ve shared the stage with many acts, artist and lots of legends. September 11, 2004 was a very special evening. #KrisKristofferson met me backstage at a venue and introduced himself. We talked for a few minutes and then he asked me if I would tune his guitar. I was so nervous. I took my time and made sure his guitar was perfectly in tune. Shortly before Kris went on stage I handed him his guitar. He walked out to the microphone and stood in front of thousands of people and performed his hits with the guitar I’d just tuned. I watched his show from the side of the stage and thought to myself, “ I just tuned Kris Kristofferson‘s guitar. I think I’m gonna be telling this story for the rest of my life.” That was one very cool and unforgettable experience.  RIP, Mr. Kristofferson.
• John Ford Coley – This is another one that just really hurts. We are losing the cream of the crop. I so admired Kris Kristofferson. I remember the first time that I heard “Me and Bobby McGee” and I thought who in the world wrote this one. I learned that thing backwards and forwards. Just the one line of “pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna” to this day still has to be one of the best visuals lyrics I’ve ever heard. I was in love with his music ever since. What a remarkable writer.
• John McEuen – Kris Kristofferson made great music for us that was brought to life by Elvis, Cash, Joplin, and Kris himself (and many others). What a sad day to lose him. I recorded with him at John Carter Cash’s cabin studio on a Carter Family song (Gold Watch and Chain), and met up with him several times over the years before and after that. While watching his solo show in St. Petersburg, Florida I was amazed at the calm control and love he got from his audience.
• John Rich – So sad to hear Kris Kristofferson has passed. He and I became friends over the years, and it was a distinct honor every time I got to work or hang out with him. He was one of the greatest lyricists to ever live, and a true class act. He set the bar so very high. Miss ya brother

• Kyle Young (Country Music Hall of Fame CEO) – Kris Kristofferson believed creativity is God-given, and those who ignore such a gift are doomed to unhappiness. He preached that a life of the mind gives voice to the soul, and his work gave voice not only to his soul but to ours. He leaves a resounding legacy.
• Lacy J. Dalton – In my opinion, Kris was one of the greatest songwriters ever – an incredible role model for me with my own writing – a hero, and a great, great man.  I will miss him terribly.
• Larry Gatlin – It would take a wordsmith as good as Kris Kristofferson himself to express the feelings going through me right now, but since Kris is not here I’ll just say, I’m sad that he’s not still here with us on earth, but I’m happy he’s in Heaven with Johnny and Waylon and Roger. • Lee Greenwood – Hard to believe my friend Kris Kristofferson has left us. He was successful in all areas of his life. A champion boxer, a world-class actor, a spectacular songwriter and singer, and a hero to everyone fortunate enough to know him. I will never forget his support for me when I received my first CMA Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year Award – his friendship and encouragement helped validate my career in country music and my place in Nashville. My family and I send our deepest sympathy to Kris’ family. We lost a giant in our industry today!

• Travis Tritt – Sad to hear of @Kris Kristofferson‘s passing. He was an inspiration to me and I was fortunate to get to know him on the set of “Outlaw Justice” that we filmed in Spain in 1998. My heartfelt condolences go out to Kris’s wife, Lisa and all of his family, friends and fans.
• Trent Tomlinson – This was truly one of the greatest nights of my life. I got to hang out on the bus with Kris and he even asked me to play him a song and as reluctant as I was, I knew it was an opportunity of a lifetime. He listened to every word I had to say, and then said , “Son that’s pretty damn good” that was all I needed to hear to let me know that I made the right decision to move to Nashville to pursue my dream. If it wasn’t for this night, I’m not sure I’d still be here doing what I’m doing. Rest in Peace my friend!
• Trisha Yearwood – This one hurts. The word legend gets tossed around a lot but with Kristofferson the shoe fits. These are shoes that won’t be filled. Rest easy.
• Ward Davis – It’s weird to think that one of the coolest things I ever got to do was change a guitar string with my buddy for the frustrated old man standing in that doorway right there. But it was Kris’ string, and we had no business anywhere near it. Yet, there we were. He was as we all are. A human being. Kris Kristofferson was an exceptional example.  I met a man once, in Marble, Colorado who had gone to college with Kris at Oxford. He told me “Kris…..turned his back on academia.” My response was, “Well, Thank God!” And I meant it. And God blessed us, yall. Giving us that man and his beautiful art. And God bless him for sharing it with us.

The country music world woke up to devastating news this morning that Toby Keith had lost his battle with stomach cancer at the age of 62.  Tributes from his peers have been pouring in, so we’re doing our best to capture as many of them as possible below.

Toby Keith’s wide-ranging catalog is worthy of a deep dive.  While he may be best known to the casual fan for his brash hits like “How Do You Like Me Now?” or his witty tunes such as “Beer For My Horses” and “Red Solo Cup”, or his patriotic anthems such as “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” and “American Soldier”; there was a lot more meat on the bone with several deep heart-wrenching songs about lost love and heartache.

He launched his career in 1993 with the first of his twenty #1 hits, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”  He went on to have 41 top-10 hits in what will one day be a Hall of Fame career.  He made a stunning comeback for what would become his farewell with his poignant performance of “Don’t Let The Old Man In” on the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards.

• Aaron Lewis – Toby Keith wasn’t only an amazing singer-songwriter, a pioneer of truth-telling and a legend in his own right, but he was also a lover of God and Country. And above all, a Patriot. • Ashley Cooke – man, @tobykeith was a real true icon. got to see him play at an award show recently. he walked on stage looking noticeably thin, as one does when battling cancer, and without skipping a beat he says “bet you never thought you’d see me in skinny jeans” the whole room was in the palm of his hands. you’ll be missed, TK.
• Big Kenny Alphin (Big & Rich) – Life is short. So sad to hear of the passing of our friend @tobykeith. He was a superstar performer, legendary songwriter and great American. Prayers and condolences to all his family. He will be missed by many.
• Bill Anderson – I never got the chance to know Toby Keith as well as I would have liked to, but I always enjoyed his company and certainly admired his talent. I wish I could have written a song or two with him…he was a great writer as well as performer. This picture was taken in the hallway backstage at the Grand Ole Opry when he made one of his rare appearances there. He gave us a lot of good music and left us with a lot of good memories. May he rest in peace.
• Bill Engvall – Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of my friend, Toby Keith. We shared a lot of laughs over the years that I will treasure. I guess “the old man got in”. RIP TK.

• Blake Shelton – Even though I knew about your battle these last few months I still never imagined this day. Anyone who knew you knows what I mean. You were the toughest man I ever met. Thank you brother for being a friend, a hero and an inspiration. There will never be another Toby Keith.
• Bobby Braddock – I WANNA TALK ABOUT TOBY: This morning when I turned my phone on, the first thing I saw was a message from my Kentucky friend Debbie Smith that read “Toby Keith went to Heaven.”  Just a little over four months ago Toby came to participate in my Kris Kristofferson Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to say a few nice things about me and to sing our big monster hit, “I Wanna Talk About Me.” He looked a little frail but his singing was as great as ever.  Toby was not only an amazing singer/entertainer, but he was an unforgettable bigger-than-life character, overflowing with good humor and brimming with self confidence. I was lucky to get a cut by this superstar because he was a great songwriter who wrote most of his own material. He took my song to #1 for five weeks in the country charts and high in the pop charts; and it was considered the first #1 country rap song. He once told me that when somebody would say that “I Wanna Talk About Me” wasn’t a country song, he would tell them: “Don’t tell ME that song’s not country; Bobby Braddock wrote it!”  I have fond memories of the night in 2015 that Toby and I were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York – we were the only country songwriters inducted that night, the others were pop and rock writers such as Cyndi Lauper. The night before induction night BMI was having a nice private dinner for that year’s inductees, and Toby was sitting across the table from Linda Perry who wrote Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” Pink’s “Let’s Get the Party Started” and was the writer and singer of 4 Non Blondes’s international hit “What’s Up.” Linda kind of playfully asked him, “Toby, do you have a problem with me being a lesbian?” Toby laughed that big infectuous laugh and said, “Honey, if you ain’t got no problem with me, I ain’t got no problem with you!” On induction night when I was on the stage at the piano singing our hit, there in the audience was this giant of a man in his trademark cowboy hat, standing up, clapping his hands to the music and singing along with me, the spotlight on both of us. I remember at the after-party my daughter, Lauren, was engaged in a long conversation with Toby, and afterwards she said to me, “Wow, what a nice guy!”  I say this for all the Toby Keith fans, of which I am one, “We’re gonna miss you Toby.” I wish the big man could have lived a lot longer, but I guess he was bigger than life.

• Carter’s Chord – TOBY KEITH. He had such an incredible impact on so many lives. He represents a huge chapter in ours. He signed us to our record deal, produced our albums, and brought us out on the road. He took 3 girls who were super green, believed in us, propped us up, and set the course for our career. We are forever grateful for the years we spent with him. He loved music so much. Our hearts to go out to his family, his band, and everyone who is grieving today. We are cherishing the core memories we have in our hearts.
• Chancey Williams – I woke up this morning to the news of Toby passing. I can’t hardly believe it. I’m so fortunate that I got to call Toby a friend. I moved to Nashville after college to do an internship and got to work for TK (his manager) as well as work for Toby’s label Showdog. He was such a great man who treated me like family. I have so many stories and memories of spending time with him that I will never forget. Not long ago Mica (Toby’s lifelong background singer) sent him a picture of her and I and he called me his oldest son. That meant the world to me. Rest in peace Toby.
• Chapel Hart – Toby was the embodiment of GOD, Family, & Country… and had a way of making you stand up a little taller when singing about (or honoring) our service men and women. We are better country music artists because of the life and legacy of Toby Keith. Rest well, brother, may your music and legacy live on forever!
• Charlie Daniels Jr. – It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Toby Keith after 1 1/2 years battling stomach cancer. Prayers to his friends, family and his many fans.

• Chely Wright – I’ve been thinking about Toby’s passing all day long. It’s a devastating loss for Tricia and their kids and all the close friends who love this family. I was lucky to know Toby Keith. He and I were the flagship artists on Polydor Nashville / A&M Records back in the early 90’s. He’d had a couple of big hits over on Mercury Records and I was just starting out, so of course I hung on every word he said and I paid close attention to how he went about conducting business. The great Harold Shedd had signed us both to Mercury and sometime in 1993, he took us over to Polydor. We all sort felt like our fates were inextricably linked. The vibe at the label was that of a startup. The team was scrappy, smart, creative and we had something to prove. Harold gave me wise advice one day as Toby was walking out of a room. Harold did a little head tip in Toby’s direction and said, “Follow that guy. He knows what he’s doing.” So I did. Toby modeled some really important behaviors that I did my best to embed into how I handled myself and into my way of working. There’s a lot I can say about his talents as a songwriter and a performer (gifted, prolific and authentic), but I think the thing that has always stood out to me about Toby was that he was a good person. He was generous with his time, thoughtful with his words, purposeful in his actions and true to who he was. Always. Not sometimes, not most of the time, but always.  Rest in peace, Toby.“… Sleepin’ out all night beneath the desert stars…With a dream in my eye and a prayer in my heart…”
• Chris Janson – It’s a very sad day for all of music, especially Country music. Losing Toby, is like losing a pillar that is not replaceable. He took us on tour right after Boat became a hit. Won’t ever forget that, and will always be very grateful. RIP, Sir. Thank you for the memories.

When I came out as gay in 2017, Toby wasn’t afraid to show his support, writing “Cody, I admire your courage” proving to me he was fearless in speaking up for what he knew. Yes he was multi-platinum, multi-talented and won all the awards. But mostly the Toby I knew and loved was an honest guy, a real friend and as fun as anyone you’ll ever meet. Rest in peace Big Dawg Daddy. You’re missed.

Because of him, I have had some of the greatest experiences and made some of the greatest memories of my life. Thank you for taking that chance and making that impact. Truly rest in peace Toby Keith.

Toby just hit another grand slam and we could learn from this example. Sometimes it’s not about the elaborate production because sometimes the production is simply the actions of the man. • David Adam Byrnes – I took my first trip to Nashville alone just days after my high school graduation and the first place I went was the Fiddle And Steel Guitar Bar. Toby Keith walked into the bar and I can honestly say I remember it being the first time I was ever star struck. I walked up to introduce myself and he offered me a shot of whiskey and since I was underage he had a shot for the both of us. I was blown away how he took the time to just chat and give advice to this 19 year old kid he didn’t know. It’s a moment I have never forgotten. He was a huge part of my childhood and teenage years musically but I’m even more proud to be part of the “fiddle fam” with him and the rest of the Easy Money band and my condolences to the crew and his family. Fly high TK, I know you and Joey are having a heck of a time being reunited upstairs.

I met Toby many times but, my favourite moments were just hanging out with Toby and my best buddy Brian back stage at Cook County Saloon in Edmonton. What a time that was!  Toby’s music and songwriting stands on its own but in my opinion, it was his business mind, just doing what he did best and sticking to his roots and what he believed in, throughout his career, that really set him apart from anyone else in the business.  Gone way too soon, Toby is a legend and he’s #Dreamwalking with the big man in the sky now. • Grand Ole Opry – We loved the times Toby Keith played this stage, including most recently when he visited the Opry House to accept the first-ever People’s Choice Country Icon Award.  Toby’s music will live on forever, and we’re remembering alongside his many friends and family. Thank you, Toby.
• Granger Smith – Heavy morning with the announcement of losing a pillar in the country music community. I wasn’t expecting that news the same day I announce this news. But the Lord is sovereign and death is a reality we cannot avoid. In fact, it’s not helpful to avoid the conversation about death altogether but instead it’s good to process through death—and what comes afterwards. That’s what my new book is about called ‘Up Toward the Light’. It comes out April 2nd (pre-order now) and I hope it’s an encouragement to you and your children!  I’m so grateful for the joy TK’s music brought so many of us for so many years. • Heath Wright (Ricochet) – I knew Toby from back in our Oklahoma nightclub days. He was the leader of the “Easy Money” band, and I remember looking up to him as a band leader even back then. I think the thing I admired most about him is that he did things his own way and made no apologies for it! I’m told that he came out to the last show we performed in Grove, Oklahoma, but had to leave before we came off stage. I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye or tell him how much I’ve looked up to him over the years. I hope he knew. Rest in peace, my Oklahoma brother!
• Jack Ingram – Toby Keith was a loyal, faithful and good friend of mine. He stood with his people and his people stood by him. He was controversial at times, hard headed sometimes but always thoughtful and vulnerable. I ALWAYS believed in him even if I didn’t always agree with him. I will always miss him. He took me in. I want to send him wings on his way out. RIP Big Dawg Daddy
• Jackson Dean – It was an honor to have known Toby the little that I did. It was an honor to touch the same stage. I will never forget his wild stories and the kindness he gave to me. Journey well, Legend.
• James Otto – Completely heartbroken waking up to the news of Toby Keith passing. I thought he was on the mend. I was blessed to do the entire American Ride tour with Toby and Trace and will never forget the experience.  It’s hard to see any life cut short but there’s something incredibly startling about seeing someone like Toby taken so young. • James Robert Webb – 90s country superstar and fellow Oklahoman Toby Keith passed away last night. So much more than an artist he was—hard to say “was”—a GOAT songwriter who will always be a songwriting hero of mine.  A great melody writer. Steely Dan like modulations in songs like Whiskey Girl and what I’ve had co-writers say are “too many key changes” were part of that left of center trademark style that we share with another Okie, Roger Miller.  @tobykeith and @brooksanddunn single handedly got me back into country with their great country-roots rock & blues music. As an artist, I’ve opened most of my shows over the last decade with Should Have Been A Cowboy. I remember who’s Your Daddy coming out around the time our first daughter was born. When I Love This Bar was a song everyone wished they had written. When Angry American united a country against our enemy. I’ve even played at his venues. So for me, a true hero has fallen.  Guess I’ll sit back and watch the Zs discover him on streaming.  Ride that pony high, brother!
• Jamie O’Neal – Toby Keith was so kind to me when I was his opening act on the Unleashed tour…He was a force of nature on stage and his songs spoke the truth! He was so real and a patriot through and through. He was a big prankster and got me quite a few times…He was a friend and an inspiration to so many, especially as he fought the big fight in these last few years with his usual grit and grace and humor. Thank you Toby for everything
• Janie Fricke – Toby has been a great talent and image in the music business and will be respected and remembered forever.

• Josh Abbott – October 2018, I was at Rodney Carrington’s bday celebration in Oklahoma. His good friend Toby Keith showed up. When we met, the only thing he wanted to talk about was: why the disconnect between Texas country and him? He felt it was unfair and we had a great conversation about it. And you know, he was right. Our genre, myself included, labeled him as “cheesy.” But he was right. He was Willie Nelson’s guy. He played Floores & Gruene. He played Willie’s picnic. He loved the Texas side of things. He wrote his own songs and damn did he have some great ones. And he was tough as hell. I apologized to him for anything I might’ve said that was unfair and immature. Honestly I had wanted to anyway. But having that conversation was a real honest moment I won’t forget. Pretty sure a hug was involved and he genuinely appreciated the convo. I did too.  I never knew him other than that moment but I’ll never forget it. Thank you Toby for the songs, your patriotism, and your toughness. Rest in peace TK.

• Josh Turner – Toby Keith was a force to be reckoned with. 32 #1 hits, 30 years in the music business, a proficient songwriter, an unforgettable voice, and a staunch supporter of the US military. Not many people know what it takes to have a 30 year career, but you have to be incredibly tough. Add cancer to that and you have to be tougher. Toby Keith was that tough. Thank you Toby for all the great music you’ve given us throughout the years. May you rest in peace and your legacy live on.

• Kix Brooks – Waking up to losing Toby wakes up a lot of memories and realities – I remember the first time we actually met and talked – he was wearing a blue leather suit – we all wore horrible clothes back then – we got along from the beginning – he called “a spade a spade” plain and simple – always – we asked him to come on tour with us somewhere in the late ‘90s, along with Keith Urban, and I’ll never forget after our first show together, he said “We’ve got to find a place to play” …after that we would go find a house band after every show and burn ‘til the flame was gone – he was a relentless participant in every aspect of his life – performing, writing, golf, hanging with his friends, along with his dedication to the military and the Red White and Blue. Proudly patriotic, he didn’t mind if his clear-cut convictions ruffled your feathers. For three decades, he reflected the defiant strength of the country music audience. • Little Texas – In 1991, we met Toby Keith just before we played a bar in Oklahoma City called Cowdaddies. We played a great round of golf with him that day and that started a friendship that lasted 33 years. We are so sad to learn of his passing, but he gave cancer a fight it’ll never forget, just as he fought through his whole career. • Richard Young (Kentucky Headhunters) – I met Toby for the first time when Mercury Records president Harold Shedd asked me to attend a showcase for Toby and two other acts he had just signed to the label. Toby had a great sense of humor and through the years would show up at our shows out of the blue and jump on-stage with us to sing ‘Dumas Walker!’ He just loved to surprise people and have fun. I especially remember one time in New York City, which was about as far from Oklahoma and Kentucky as you can get, we were playing the Lone Star Roadhouse. And out nowhere, here comes Toby out of the audience and jumped on-stage! I always loved the fact that he was a country act but was not afraid to add a horn section to his songs and live show. He broke a few rules but made certain things were OK for those who came after him.
• Rick Trevino – Toby Keith and I were support acts for several Sawyer Brown tours back in the day. Toby and his crew (and SB) were class acts and always treated me and my crew with kindness and respect. My prayers go out to all of Toby’s family and friends as we celebrate his life and career.

The competition was tough. I would often go and check out Toby Keith’s show. He was amazing to me and others who were battling it out for the big stages. We have received one of the most dreaded press releases a country music outlet such as ourselves could receive.  Loretta Lynn has passed away.

Country superstar Loretta Lynn passed peacefully in her sleep early this morning, Tuesday, October 4, at her home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Lynn was 90.
 
Over the course of her 60-year career, the famous native of Butcher Hollow, Ky. amassed a staggering 51 Top 10 hits, garnered every accolade available in music from GRAMMY awards to induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and broke down barriers for women everywhere with songs like “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind),” “Fist City” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
 
Thanks to the Oscar-winning 1980 film Coal Miner’s Daughter starring Sissy Spacek, Lynn’s story and songs were brought to an even wider audience, amplifying her impact on several generations of songwriters and artists in various genres including Jack White, with whom Lynn made the GRAMMY-winning 2004 album Van Lear Rose.
 
Throughout her 80s, Loretta continued to write new songs and, in 2016, returned to the charts with the GRAMMY-nominated Full Circle, the first in a series of critically acclaimed albums produced by her daughter, Patsy Lynn Russell, and John Carter Cash at Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tenn. She followed up with the seasonal classic White Christmas Blue (2016) and 2018’s GRAMMY-nominated Wouldn’t It Be Great, a combination of newly written songs and fresh interpretations of her catalog. In 2021, the American music icon released Still Woman Enough, a celebration of women in country music; her 50th studio album (not including her ten studio duet collaborations with Conway Twitty), Still Woman Enough featured a title track co-written with Patsy Lynn Russell and a deeply emotional “Coal Miner’s Daughter Recitation,” commemorating the 50th anniversary of the release of Lynn’s signature song (October 5, 1970) and album (January 4, 1971).
 
Lynn’s music and achievements were repeatedly recognized by all of the major awards bodies. She joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1962, won four GRAMMY awards, seven American Music Awards and eight Country Music Association awards. She was the first woman to win the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music awards for Entertainer of the Year. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008, and was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 2003 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. She sold over 45 million albums worldwide.
 
Lynn was pre-deceased by her husband of 48 years Oliver Vanetta “Doolittle” Lynn, her daughter Betty Sue Lynn and son Jack Benny Lynn. She is survived by her daughters Patsy Lynn Russell, Peggy Lynn, Clara (Cissie) Marie Lynn and her son Ernest Ray Lynn as well as grandchildren Lori Lynn Smith, Ethan Lyell, Elizabeth Braun, Tayla Lynn, Jack Lynn, Ernest Ray Lynn Jr., Katherine Condya, Alexandria Lynn, Jasyntha Connelly, Megan Horkins, Anthony Brutto, Jason Lynn, Wesley Lynn, Levi Lynn, Emmy Rose Russell, David Russell, Lucca Marchetti and step grandchildren David Greer, Jennafer Russell, Melody Russell and Natalie Rapp, and her great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to the Loretta Lynn Foundation. Information about a memorial service/celebration of life will be made available at a later date. I’ll never forget the energy she brought and the excitement that filled that place. The building literally erupted. It had a profound impact on my life. It changed my life. I’ve always told people it was the show that set me on fire. Loretta will always be one of my heroes. She was a pioneer. An original. A real artist in every sense of the word. Her music was about real life and real issues. And she made her music on her terms. “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” biopic is the greatest autobiographical movie ever done. I’ve seen it a million times. I can recite the whole thing. Loretta always told me “I love you” everytime I got to be around her. And I was so blessed to know her. Never thought in a million years I’d get to meet her and be around her. One of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever met. Fly high sweet Loretta. I love you too…

All of that came back to her because of the truth and powerful lyrics Mrs. Loretta Lynn wrote into her songs. Mrs. Loretta taught me the power of music, and through her music, she taught me to stay true to myself, and showed me the woman I want to be. I’ve always said my best friends growing up were Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, because they were there for me when it felt like no one else was. I’m so heartbroken to hear of Mrs. Loretta’s passing, but I know she is with Patsy and Doo. My heart goes out to all of her family, friends and everyone who loved her. She will forever be one of the best and greatest women who ever lived. Thank you for the songs Mrs. Loretta, and thank you for being the reason I love music. She was the Matriarch of our Opry Family the past several years and even though she could not be there in person, she was very much in that building, in our hearts, and on our minds. She was very welcoming to me when I came, asking me to sit down beside her and tell her about me. I was thrilled then and it still thrills me to think she was interested. In the end she just patted my knee and said “Don’t ever change”. Her impact on our industry through her songs was huge. She made everyone aware, starkly at times, of the plight of some women’s lives, and that awareness brought about changes. Of course, I will always remember her sense of humor!  She would ask me to tell her a joke and then say “Tell Doo so he can explain it to me”! She will always be one of Country Music’s greatest gifts to the world.
• Jenny Tolman – Loretta Lynn will always be remembered as a legendary country music artist who blazed so many trails for women in country music. She said things that so many were afraid to say, that had never been spoken about before. I have been profoundly impacted by her songwriting and boldness, and inspired by her courage to share the female perspective of life in country music. Especially, being pregnant myself now, I am in awe of how she managed such a long-lasting and iconic career, all while being a loving mother. I share in the mourning with our country music community, as we say goodbye to an extraordinary woman.
• Jerry Lee Lewis – I’ve known Loretta Lynn for many, many years. Watched her hit the scene in Nashville in 1960 and have always been a fan of her non-apologetic attitude and country sound. I was hoping to see her and visit at the Country Music Hall of Fame inductions coming up… God Bless her family and while we will miss her here on Earth, there’s no doubt in my mind she’s joined that heavenly choir.

• Pam Tillis – Isn’t it funny when you’re SO famous you only need one name for people to know who you’re talking about? Loretta. One of the incomparable archangels of country music, her name evoked deep truths with simplicity, genius distilled. Her voice was big enough to ring down any holler and carried around the world. She inspired generations of artists, was loved by the world and honored by her children. She lives on in her music and our memories.
• Parker McCollum – Listening to nothing but Loretta Lynn for the rest of the week. RIP to an absolute icon in country music. Damn.

• Randy Owen (Alabama) – Loretta was a true original. Loved her voice, especially on her gospel records. On behalf of ALABAMA, I’d like to say the world has lost a treasure. She will be missed.
• Randy Travis – My roots in country music run deep because of may love an admiration for ‘Ms Loretta.’ She was there in the ’80s, when I arrived in Nashville, to encourage me and allow me to open for her on tour… and, she was there to open for me, in Aurora, IL, in 2013, which unknowingly was my last public concert before my stroke. The years in between are each gifts wrapped in respect, admiration, awe and love — and we shopped for lots of dresses through those years!  Whenever I heard ‘my Randy,’ I knew Loretta was near and her kind, sweet kisses left lipstick memories on my forehead and both cheeks.  I wish I could have bottled those kisses and saved them for a day like today, when I learned of her passing. An emptiness came over me as I reflected on the magnitude of Ms Loretta’s presence—in the heart and soul of country music, and the entire world–and the void now created. If your path ever crossed with hers, you immediately felt her magic. Loretta and Doolittle ‘Doo’ represented a legacy marriage with six beautiful children as proof… and, a lot of us that Ms. Loretta took under her wing. I thank God that my career overlapped with The Queen’s—it’s an honor and a privilege.  After 90 years of teaching us how to live and love here on earth, we sing her home to heaven, with grateful hearts. Our thoughts and prayers follow the precious Lynn family down this road of loss and transition—thank you for sharing Ms Loretta with us. We will never have another Loretta Lynn…t his world isn’t good enough for two of her.
• Ray Scott – One of my most recent Grand Ole Opry appearances is also one of the most memorable ones.. it was 6 years ago during the winter when they were doing the Opry shows at the Ryman Auditorium . As always, I was stoked to be there, but this one was an asterisk moment, so the anticipation was great. Loretta Lynn was to be on the show that night, and having never had the chance to meet her, well, you can imagine I was pretty excited… The week of the show, as luck would have it, I got sick… turned out to be a pretty rough sinus infection… My voice was completely shot, but there was no way I was gonna miss that performance, so I went to the doc and got a pretty powerful steroid shot… It helped quite a bit, but I still sounded like Froggy from the Little Rascals… not proud of that, but I was so blessed to have had the opportunity to meet her and share that stage with the Queen that evening.. I pray she rests well.
• Ray Stevens – What a sweet lady and an authentic country singer. She gave a voice to millions of women who would have not otherwise had one. Loretta, we miss you already.
• Reba McEntire – Mama and Loretta Lynn were four years apart, Mama being the oldest. They always reminded me a lot of each other. Strong women, who loved their children and were fiercely loyal. Now they’re both in Heaven getting to visit and talk about how they were raised, how different country music is now from what it was when they were young. Sure makes me feel good that Mama went first so she could welcome Loretta into the hollers of heaven!  I always did and I always will love Loretta. She was always so nice to me. I sure appreciate her paving the rough and rocky road for all us girl singers.
• Rebecca Lynn Howard – Saddened by the passing of the beautiful and oh so talented @LorettaLynn. She was one of my favorites and I even grew up right down the road from her hometown. Rest in peace, Loretta

• Richard Young (Kentucky Headhunters) – Loretta always sent me notes of encouragement. She was proud of our Kentucky heritage. She once told me, ‘We were common and that’s what made us special.’ Loretta understood. The real deal! She understood the grass roots of all musical styles. She was not only the ‘Queen of Country Music’ but also the ‘Queen of Down to Earth.’
• Ricky Skaggs – England just recently lost their Queen, and today we have lost ours. It’s a very sad day for the music industry. Loretta Lynn has gone on to her heavenly home. She did more for women in Country Music than anyone. She opened up all the doors. Her songwriting was cutting edge and she was never afraid to tell the truth. She loved her family and wrote songs about her eastern Kentucky upbringing, but her unforgettable voice and beautiful smile is what I’ll remember most about Loretta. She was an original, one of a kind.
• Rodney Atkins – I’ve always said Loretta Lynn is the GOAT female artist of ALL music.. She lived it, wrote it and sang about it. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with her family…I know heaven will be celebrating Miss Loretta’s homecoming.

• Sara Evans – I am so sad today. I grew up on stage singing Loretta Lynn songs and all I wanted was to be her! This WOMAN gave country music SO much of herself and her life. Where would we be without Loretta Lynn music in our lives? I know that she’s in Heaven right now singing with the angels. Her life was a country song. I am so grateful to have gotten to meet her and even sing for her once. Rest In Peace Loretta! We love you and you’ll be greatly missed!
• Sarah Trahern (CMA CEO) – It is not enough to say today that Country Music has lost Loretta Lynn, but rather the world has lost a true music legend. Loretta was a woman whose contributions and impact inspired countless artists and transformed the Country genre into a universal art form. She was a Country Music Hall of Fame member and the first woman to receive a CMA Award for Entertainer of the Year. As a trailblazing songwriter, she bravely wrote about socially and culturally relevant topics that came to define a generation. I’ll personally remember Loretta for her spirit, artistry and genius that rivaled contemporaries like Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
• Shania Twain – I’m always so flattered to be called a “trailblazer”, it’s the word that puts me in the company of such incredible female artists like Dolly, like Tammy and just like Loretta… I know that when Loretta got to Nashville in the 60’s there were hardly any women in Country music, it’s in the 70’s, because of women like Loretta, that the marketplace changed – that’s when women started to really sell records, that’s when women started to be played on the radio – that’s why I even stood a chance!  Loretta was an honest and authentic songwriter, proud of her working class background, proud of her native American heritage, proud to be a woman and she had a wicked sense of humour about it all! Her musical legacy is more important than she will ever be credited for.  There is no Shania Twain without Loretta Lynn (and those that came before her) – constantly kicking the door down and finding humour along the way! R.I.P Loretta 
• Sheryl Crow – The news of @LorettaLynn’s passing just came across my news feed and time stopped. There will never be another like her. May she forever sing with the angels!!

Many memories, so much gratitude and thanking my God above for blessing me first with her music and her guidance through the perils of the music world way before we ever met. I looked up to Loretta always. Then when we became friends, she brought me flowers always, and I brought flowers to her. Time has let me share many special moments with her, but now time has taken her from me forever! But she’s left me with so much to remember and cling on to. I thank God above that I got to sing with her on her latest record. I’ve been waiting a long time for that to come to pass. I was busy planning a much-needed trip to Mexico when I got the news, but for now, Mexico will have to wait because my childhood hero Loretta Lynn has caught the train and she’s ‘On Her Way to Heaven.’ Mexico will always be there, but my friend has gone on to glory. I will see her there someday! I miss you so Retti! I think you know how I feel! Your girl always.

• Wynonna – When people ask me what my favorite movie is, “Coal Miner’s Daughter” is my number one. Loretta has always been my favorite, from the time I can remember. As a young girl, I learned about Loretta from listening to the Grand Ole Opry. I met her when I was just 20 years old. As I walked into the CMA’s for the first time in 1984, she was the first person who came over and hugged me. Loretta was like an aunt to me. I would call her and she would tell me stories. Some of my fondest memories of Loretta come from her telling me all about her life in Butcher Holler. During one of my recent visits to Hurricane Mills, she gave me a Bible and a crocheted doily that her Mama made. I will cherish those gifts forever. It’s really hard for me to comprehend life without her. I will miss our chats on the phone, the sound of her voice telling me she loves me, and hearing her beautiful laughter {at my jokes}… We mustn’t ever forget how important this woman was…IS…to country music.  Rest In Peace my beloved “Retty.” I will always love you.
