The country music world woke up to devastating news this morning that Toby Keith had lost his battle with stomach cancer at the age of 62.  Tributes from his peers have been pouring in, so we’re doing our best to capture as many of them as possible below.

Toby Keith’s wide-ranging catalog is worthy of a deep dive.  While he may be best known to the casual fan for his brash hits like “How Do You Like Me Now?” or his witty tunes such as “Beer For My Horses” and “Red Solo Cup”, or his patriotic anthems such as “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” and “American Soldier”; there was a lot more meat on the bone with several deep heart-wrenching songs about lost love and heartache.

He launched his career in 1993 with the first of his twenty #1 hits, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”  He went on to have 41 top-10 hits in what will one day be a Hall of Fame career.  He made a stunning comeback for what would become his farewell with his poignant performance of “Don’t Let The Old Man In” on the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards.

• Aaron Lewis – Toby Keith wasn’t only an amazing singer-songwriter, a pioneer of truth-telling and a legend in his own right, but he was also a lover of God and Country. And above all, a Patriot. God bless Toby Keith and his family. Sending thoughts and prayers to his family and millions of fans around the world.
• Aaron Tippin – We’ve lost a great one. Toby was an amazing talent and man. Sending prayers to his family and friends.
• Academy of Country Music – We are heartbroken by the passing of Country Music superstar Toby Keith. A 15-time ACM Award recipient, including multiple wins for ACM Top Male Vocalist and ACM Album of the Year, he was named ACM Entertainer of the Year twice, in 2002 and 2003.  With worldwide sales of more than 40 million album, he built an exceptional career on well-sung ballads, barroom singalongs, and patriotic anthems, as well as heartfelt songwriting, for which he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as received the National Medal of Arts. Indeed, Keith wrote the vast majority of his no. 1 hits and had a chart-topping single every year for 20 consecutive years. He also dedicated himself tirelessly to countless charitable initiatives, including several USO tours and events. Most recently, he received the ACM Spirit Award, presented to a singer-songwriter who continues the legacy of Country legend Merle Haggard.  Please join the Academy in sending love, healing, and prayers to his family, friends, and millions of fans all over the globe.
• Alan Jackson – Denise and I are saddened to hear about our friend Toby Keith. Our prayers are with Tricia and the entire Keith family.
• Anita Cochran – Woke up to the sad news of the passing of @tobykeith. He was always so nice to me. We spent a lot of time together when we filmed the Dukes Of Hazzard Movie.  Such a strong man with all the money in the world but still cancer took him down. He fought so hard. Thank you for the music and the memories.  RIP friend.
• Ashley Cooke – man, @tobykeith was a real true icon. got to see him play at an award show recently. he walked on stage looking noticeably thin, as one does when battling cancer, and without skipping a beat he says “bet you never thought you’d see me in skinny jeans” the whole room was in the palm of his hands. you’ll be missed, TK.
• Big Kenny Alphin (Big & Rich) – Life is short. So sad to hear of the passing of our friend @tobykeith. He was a superstar performer, legendary songwriter and great American. Prayers and condolences to all his family. He will be missed by many.
• Bill Anderson – I never got the chance to know Toby Keith as well as I would have liked to, but I always enjoyed his company and certainly admired his talent. I wish I could have written a song or two with him…he was a great writer as well as performer. This picture was taken in the hallway backstage at the Grand Ole Opry when he made one of his rare appearances there. He gave us a lot of good music and left us with a lot of good memories. May he rest in peace.
• Bill Engvall – Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of my friend, Toby Keith. We shared a lot of laughs over the years that I will treasure. I guess “the old man got in”. RIP TK.
• Billy Dean – Remembering @tobykeith today. Our paths crossed while recording ABC In Concert, Then again backstage in a pick up game of basketball before his show..tough competitor and great American. RIP!!
• Billy Ray Cyrus – Stood me still with emotion and memories to see and hear of the loss of my friend…the legend…Toby Keith. Heart breaking with thoughts and prayers for his fans and family this morning. We toured together several times around the globe.  He was always the kindest…sweetest gentle giant of an outlaw one could ever hope to entertain and make music with. Raising a Red Cup this morning and saying a prayer. Heavens a honkytonk tonight.
• BlackHawk – The sad news today of Toby Keith’s passing is heartbreaking. He was a great singer and an incredible songwriter. A true self-styled artist of enormous proportions. Our sincere condolences to his family.
• Blake Shelton – Even though I knew about your battle these last few months I still never imagined this day. Anyone who knew you knows what I mean. You were the toughest man I ever met. Thank you brother for being a friend, a hero and an inspiration. There will never be another Toby Keith.
• Bobby Braddock – I WANNA TALK ABOUT TOBY: This morning when I turned my phone on, the first thing I saw was a message from my Kentucky friend Debbie Smith that read “Toby Keith went to Heaven.”  Just a little over four months ago Toby came to participate in my Kris Kristofferson Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to say a few nice things about me and to sing our big monster hit, “I Wanna Talk About Me.” He looked a little frail but his singing was as great as ever.  Toby was not only an amazing singer/entertainer, but he was an unforgettable bigger-than-life character, overflowing with good humor and brimming with self confidence. I was lucky to get a cut by this superstar because he was a great songwriter who wrote most of his own material. He took my song to #1 for five weeks in the country charts and high in the pop charts; and it was considered the first #1 country rap song. He once told me that when somebody would say that “I Wanna Talk About Me” wasn’t a country song, he would tell them: “Don’t tell ME that song’s not country; Bobby Braddock wrote it!”  I have fond memories of the night in 2015 that Toby and I were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York – we were the only country songwriters inducted that night, the others were pop and rock writers such as Cyndi Lauper. The night before induction night BMI was having a nice private dinner for that year’s inductees, and Toby was sitting across the table from Linda Perry who wrote Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” Pink’s “Let’s Get the Party Started” and was the writer and singer of 4 Non Blondes’s international hit “What’s Up.” Linda kind of playfully asked him, “Toby, do you have a problem with me being a lesbian?” Toby laughed that big infectuous laugh and said, “Honey, if you ain’t got no problem with me, I ain’t got no problem with you!” On induction night when I was on the stage at the piano singing our hit, there in the audience was this giant of a man in his trademark cowboy hat, standing up, clapping his hands to the music and singing along with me, the spotlight on both of us. I remember at the after-party my daughter, Lauren, was engaged in a long conversation with Toby, and afterwards she said to me, “Wow, what a nice guy!”  I say this for all the Toby Keith fans, of which I am one, “We’re gonna miss you Toby.” I wish the big man could have lived a lot longer, but I guess he was bigger than life.

• Bryan White – (1st post) Many prayers for the Keith family this morning.. Such a loss. No words. Rest in peace brother. Boomer Sooner.  (2nd post)  It’s funny what we recall when we lose somebody. One of my favorite moments with Toby was rehearsal for this performance on the ACMs when it was still in LA. The story is too long to go into, but let’s just say we laughed quite a bit. Toby was a funny dude. This was a great memory paying tribute to our friend Glen Campbell. RIP Toby
• Carrie Underwood – Saddle up the horses, Jesus, ‘cause a true blue COWBOY just made his ride up to heaven!!! Introduce him to all the Okies and sign that boy up for the choir! We’re gonna miss you, Toby, but my heart has no doubt that you are standing in the presence of our King right now!!! See you again someday, friend.
• Carter’s Chord – TOBY KEITH. He had such an incredible impact on so many lives. He represents a huge chapter in ours. He signed us to our record deal, produced our albums, and brought us out on the road. He took 3 girls who were super green, believed in us, propped us up, and set the course for our career. We are forever grateful for the years we spent with him. He loved music so much. Our hearts to go out to his family, his band, and everyone who is grieving today. We are cherishing the core memories we have in our hearts.
• Chancey Williams – I woke up this morning to the news of Toby passing. I can’t hardly believe it. I’m so fortunate that I got to call Toby a friend. I moved to Nashville after college to do an internship and got to work for TK (his manager) as well as work for Toby’s label Showdog. He was such a great man who treated me like family. I have so many stories and memories of spending time with him that I will never forget. Not long ago Mica (Toby’s lifelong background singer) sent him a picture of her and I and he called me his oldest son. That meant the world to me. Rest in peace Toby.
• Chapel Hart – Toby was the embodiment of GOD, Family, & Country… and had a way of making you stand up a little taller when singing about (or honoring) our service men and women. We are better country music artists because of the life and legacy of Toby Keith. Rest well, brother, may your music and legacy live on forever!
• Charlie Daniels Jr. – It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Toby Keith after 1 1/2 years battling stomach cancer. Prayers to his friends, family and his many fans.
• Chase Bryant – I had the honor of doing some touring with Toby some years back. He was a larger than life character. When he walked in a room he could captivate it. It always blew my mind the amount of great songs he had written thru the years. He was prolific, and highly underrated in my mind. Regardless the CountryMusic and Music Industry as a whole took a massive hit with the loss of Toby. Rest easy Toby. You will be missed, but your words will live on forever!

• Chayce Beckham – My thoughts and prayers are with Toby’s family, Toby was someone I have truly looked up to and was always inspired by his music, his words, his passion for patriotism. An absolute legend who will never be forgotten. There will never be another one like Toby Keith.
• Chely Wright – I’ve been thinking about Toby’s passing all day long. It’s a devastating loss for Tricia and their kids and all the close friends who love this family. I was lucky to know Toby Keith. He and I were the flagship artists on Polydor Nashville / A&M Records back in the early 90’s. He’d had a couple of big hits over on Mercury Records and I was just starting out, so of course I hung on every word he said and I paid close attention to how he went about conducting business. The great Harold Shedd had signed us both to Mercury and sometime in 1993, he took us over to Polydor. We all sort felt like our fates were inextricably linked. The vibe at the label was that of a startup. The team was scrappy, smart, creative and we had something to prove. Harold gave me wise advice one day as Toby was walking out of a room. Harold did a little head tip in Toby’s direction and said, “Follow that guy. He knows what he’s doing.” So I did. Toby modeled some really important behaviors that I did my best to embed into how I handled myself and into my way of working. There’s a lot I can say about his talents as a songwriter and a performer (gifted, prolific and authentic), but I think the thing that has always stood out to me about Toby was that he was a good person. He was generous with his time, thoughtful with his words, purposeful in his actions and true to who he was. Always. Not sometimes, not most of the time, but always.  Rest in peace, Toby.“… Sleepin’ out all night beneath the desert stars…With a dream in my eye and a prayer in my heart…”
• Chris Janson – It’s a very sad day for all of music, especially Country music. Losing Toby, is like losing a pillar that is not replaceable. He took us on tour right after Boat became a hit. Won’t ever forget that, and will always be very grateful. RIP, Sir. Thank you for the memories.

• Clay Walker – Toby was a man’s man. Honest, hardworking, a fearless truth teller in life and song. I will miss him.
• Clint Black – Very sorry to hear Toby lost his battle. I know he and his family fought hard and you’ll all be in our thoughts & prayers, for strength and peace of mind.
• Cody Alan (CMT) – I love Toby Keith. I will never forget the times we spent. He had the highest respect for country music and songwriting. And what a hit maker! He was always good to me. We had an authentic connection, and appreciated each other’s honesty. For whatever reason, we also had great energy together on camera. He always put me at ease in those CMT interviews, like an old friend would. Or maybe it was the mezcal tequila shot he insisted I drink before every interview?!! Everytime I stepped on his bus, a heavy pour in a red solo cup was indeed ready. When I came out as gay in 2017, Toby wasn’t afraid to show his support, writing “Cody, I admire your courage” proving to me he was fearless in speaking up for what he knew. Yes he was multi-platinum, multi-talented and won all the awards. But mostly the Toby I knew and loved was an honest guy, a real friend and as fun as anyone you’ll ever meet. Rest in peace Big Dawg Daddy. You’re missed.
• Cole Swindell – RIP Toby Keith- Tell folks you love them while you can. Life is short..the older I get, the more I realize how true it is.
• Collin Raye – My heart is deeply saddened today, at the new of my friend, Toby Keith’s passing. Toby was a good man… a kind man, and a wonderful Artist and Songwriter. Toby stood for good things. He has now left his physical suffering behind, and has passed on to The Heavenly Realm. He will be very missed, here. May God be with you, Brother.

• Crystal Hoyt Bray (formerly of Trailer Choir) – Woke up to the very sad news that a former “boss” of mine has passed… to say this man changed my life would be an understatement. He walked into a bar one night in Nashville (approx ‘07) when I had jumped onstage to sing with a couple of friends, and a few months later those friends and I were signed to a record deal on his label and he put us on a tour bus to open up for him all over the country that summer. We recorded albums with him, were in a movie with him, and went on countless tours for many years. And because of him I was able to make so many friends that I still treasure today. Because of him, I have had some of the greatest experiences and made some of the greatest memories of my life. Thank you for taking that chance and making that impact. Truly rest in peace Toby Keith.
• Dallas Wayne – Toby Keith was as tough as the oilfields of Oklahoma with the soul of a poet. He fought his battle with cancer with the same toughness, grace, and resolve the same way he approached his craft of songwriting. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

• Darryl Worley – Toby Keith was his own man. He set a great example for all of us in life and in death. He had one shot at this just like we all do and he did it his way. I paid attention to his life and his career. He had a swagger that was a little different than most because he knew who he was. In life we have a chance to leave a mark that will not fade and he knocked it out of the park. In death we have a chance to exit this awful, beautiful life with grace and dignity. Toby just hit another grand slam and we could learn from this example. Sometimes it’s not about the elaborate production because sometimes the production is simply the actions of the man. God bless you and your family and thank you for showing us all how it’s done.
• David Adam Byrnes – I took my first trip to Nashville alone just days after my high school graduation and the first place I went was the Fiddle And Steel Guitar Bar. Toby Keith walked into the bar and I can honestly say I remember it being the first time I was ever star struck. I walked up to introduce myself and he offered me a shot of whiskey and since I was underage he had a shot for the both of us. I was blown away how he took the time to just chat and give advice to this 19 year old kid he didn’t know. It’s a moment I have never forgotten. He was a huge part of my childhood and teenage years musically but I’m even more proud to be part of the “fiddle fam” with him and the rest of the Easy Money band and my condolences to the crew and his family. Fly high TK, I know you and Joey are having a heck of a time being reunited upstairs.

• Gord Bamford – Woke up to the heartbreaking news of Toby Keith’s passing. I met Toby many times but, my favourite moments were just hanging out with Toby and my best buddy Brian back stage at Cook County Saloon in Edmonton. What a time that was!  Toby’s music and songwriting stands on its own but in my opinion, it was his business mind, just doing what he did best and sticking to his roots and what he believed in, throughout his career, that really set him apart from anyone else in the business.  Gone way too soon, Toby is a legend and he’s #Dreamwalking with the big man in the sky now. • Grand Ole Opry – We loved the times Toby Keith played this stage, including most recently when he visited the Opry House to accept the first-ever People’s Choice Country Icon Award.  Toby’s music will live on forever, and we’re remembering alongside his many friends and family. Thank you, Toby.
• Granger Smith – Heavy morning with the announcement of losing a pillar in the country music community. I wasn’t expecting that news the same day I announce this news. But the Lord is sovereign and death is a reality we cannot avoid. In fact, it’s not helpful to avoid the conversation about death altogether but instead it’s good to process through death—and what comes afterwards. That’s what my new book is about called ‘Up Toward the Light’. It comes out April 2nd (pre-order now) and I hope it’s an encouragement to you and your children!  I’m so grateful for the joy TK’s music brought so many of us for so many years. • Heath Wright (Ricochet) – I knew Toby from back in our Oklahoma nightclub days. He was the leader of the “Easy Money” band, and I remember looking up to him as a band leader even back then. I think the thing I admired most about him is that he did things his own way and made no apologies for it! I’m told that he came out to the last show we performed in Grove, Oklahoma, but had to leave before we came off stage. I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye or tell him how much I’ve looked up to him over the years. I hope he knew. Rest in peace, my Oklahoma brother!
• Jack Ingram – Toby Keith was a loyal, faithful and good friend of mine. He stood with his people and his people stood by him. He was controversial at times, hard headed sometimes but always thoughtful and vulnerable. I ALWAYS believed in him even if I didn’t always agree with him. I will always miss him. He took me in. I want to send him wings on his way out. RIP Big Dawg Daddy
• Jackson Dean – It was an honor to have known Toby the little that I did. It was an honor to touch the same stage. I will never forget his wild stories and the kindness he gave to me. Journey well, Legend.
• James Otto – Completely heartbroken waking up to the news of Toby Keith passing. I thought he was on the mend. I was blessed to do the entire American Ride tour with Toby and Trace and will never forget the experience.  It’s hard to see any life cut short but there’s something incredibly startling about seeing someone like Toby taken so young. • James Robert Webb – 90s country superstar and fellow Oklahoman Toby Keith passed away last night. So much more than an artist he was—hard to say “was”—a GOAT songwriter who will always be a songwriting hero of mine.  A great melody writer. Steely Dan like modulations in songs like Whiskey Girl and what I’ve had co-writers say are “too many key changes” were part of that left of center trademark style that we share with another Okie, Roger Miller.  @tobykeith and @brooksanddunn single handedly got me back into country with their great country-roots rock & blues music. As an artist, I’ve opened most of my shows over the last decade with Should Have Been A Cowboy. I remember who’s Your Daddy coming out around the time our first daughter was born. When I Love This Bar was a song everyone wished they had written. When Angry American united a country against our enemy. I’ve even played at his venues. So for me, a true hero has fallen.  Guess I’ll sit back and watch the Zs discover him on streaming.  Ride that pony high, brother!
• Jamie O’Neal – Toby Keith was so kind to me when I was his opening act on the Unleashed tour…He was a force of nature on stage and his songs spoke the truth! He was so real and a patriot through and through. He was a big prankster and got me quite a few times…He was a friend and an inspiration to so many, especially as he fought the big fight in these last few years with his usual grit and grace and humor. Thank you Toby for everything

• Jason Michael Carroll – Toby was always kind to me and my family.  He shaped a lot of what I learned as country music. I wasn’t allowed to listen to anything but gospel, growing up. I bought the “Blue Moon” album when I bought my first stereo in the Marine Corps. This one definitely hurts. #CancerSucks  I needed to pay tribute to this man who has always been there in my country music journey.  Thank you sir. @tobykeith
• Jay DeMarcus (Rascal Flatts) – This is a heart breaker.. Toby Keith was one of the first to believe in us Flatts boys… He took us on the road and took a chance on us. We were fast friends and it still remains as one of the best tour experiences of my career. However, I got something even better out of it in the end, a lifelong friend… Rest in peace Toby, I’m sure gonna miss you…
• Jesse Raub Jr. – RIP Toby Keith !! What a legend !! Touched many lives , great songwriter , and a huge inspiration to those of us chasing the dream !! Condolences to his family , keep them in your prayers !!
• Jimmy Wayne – I am thankful for #TobyKeith. His hard work and resources paid the light bill at DreamWorks Records Nashville, which provided me an opportunity to have a record deal, a few hit songs, and a career. RIP, cowboy.
• Joe Bonsall (Oak Ridge Boys) – I am incredibly saddened at the loss of Toby Keith … He battled hard and I thought he was doing better and even hitting the road again. I guess God had other plans for him. Rest Easy Toby … You were a great talent who in my opinion never received the accolades you deserved!

• John Anderson – Toby did as much good off-stage as he did on it. I got to be a part of his OK Kids Korral a few years back, and we sang a few together to benefit those kids. A good man with a huge legacy that stands as tall as him.

• Jon Wolfe – Growin’ up in Oklahoma and growin’ up on Country music there was really no one bigger than @tobykeith in my world. Toby’s music helped start a fire in me for country songs and the desire to want to be a country singer. Years later I had the privilege to open a few shows for him and sit across from him at the @usualsuspectscabo bar and share a few beers (and maybe a shot or two of tequila). He was bigger than life to me…super man. Hard to think of a world without the big dawg daddy. RIP amigo. We’ll save you a seat down at Usual Suspects. God Speed. #shouldabeenacowboy
• Josh Abbott – October 2018, I was at Rodney Carrington’s bday celebration in Oklahoma. His good friend Toby Keith showed up. When we met, the only thing he wanted to talk about was: why the disconnect between Texas country and him? He felt it was unfair and we had a great conversation about it. And you know, he was right. Our genre, myself included, labeled him as “cheesy.” But he was right. He was Willie Nelson’s guy. He played Floores & Gruene. He played Willie’s picnic. He loved the Texas side of things. He wrote his own songs and damn did he have some great ones. And he was tough as hell. I apologized to him for anything I might’ve said that was unfair and immature. Honestly I had wanted to anyway. But having that conversation was a real honest moment I won’t forget. Pretty sure a hug was involved and he genuinely appreciated the convo. I did too.  I never knew him other than that moment but I’ll never forget it. Thank you Toby for the songs, your patriotism, and your toughness. Rest in peace TK.
• Josh Gracin – Rest In Peace Big Guy! “Should Have Been A Cowboy” every man’s theme song in the 90s and beyond. Another legend that will be missed.
• Josh Turner – Toby Keith was a force to be reckoned with. 32 #1 hits, 30 years in the music business, a proficient songwriter, an unforgettable voice, and a staunch supporter of the US military. Not many people know what it takes to have a 30 year career, but you have to be incredibly tough. Add cancer to that and you have to be tougher. Toby Keith was that tough. Thank you Toby for all the great music you’ve given us throughout the years. May you rest in peace and your legacy live on.
• Kid Rock – Toby Keith was a tried and true, red, white, and blue, AMERICAN BADASS! RIP TK, sure gonna miss ya Big Dog. Thanks for the music and all the great memories.
• Kix Brooks – Waking up to losing Toby wakes up a lot of memories and realities – I remember the first time we actually met and talked – he was wearing a blue leather suit – we all wore horrible clothes back then – we got along from the beginning – he called “a spade a spade” plain and simple – always – we asked him to come on tour with us somewhere in the late ‘90s, along with Keith Urban, and I’ll never forget after our first show together, he said “We’ve got to find a place to play” …after that we would go find a house band after every show and burn ‘til the flame was gone – he was a relentless participant in every aspect of his life – performing, writing, golf, hanging with his friends, along with his dedication to the military and the Red White and Blue. But he always put his loyalty and love of God and family first – He was one of those guys I just assumed would always be there – HOF Cowboy Heart – RIP Big Man.
• Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame:  Toby Keith was big, brash, and never bowed down or slowed down for anyone. His story is a distinctly American one—a former roughneck oil worker who carved out his own space in country music with a sinewy voice and an unbending will to succeed. He wrote his breakthrough songs and later formed his own record label when he felt underserved by Nashville. He relished being an outsider and doing things his way. Proudly patriotic, he didn’t mind if his clear-cut convictions ruffled your feathers. For three decades, he reflected the defiant strength of the country music audience. His memory will continue to stand tall.
• Lacy J. Dalton – I didn’t know Toby, but he had so many people who loved him, and I’m very sorry to hear of his passing.
• Larry Gatlin – Sometimes we use the word ‘friend’ when we really mean acquaintance. Toby Keith was my friend, and all I know is this. My friend Toby does not have cancer in Heaven this morning.  As we’d say in OKLAHOMA and TEXAS, he was a good sumbich. That’s about the highest praise a TEXAN can give to someone. • Lee Greenwood – Toby Keith did things his way – amazing artist, songwriter, patriot and man of faith. I admired him and how he rolled. He and I shared a deep love for our military and I’m proud that he took his music to dangerous places in order to give American spirit to those protecting freedom. I was pleased that he called me the OG and was honored to work with him a few times through the years. Please join our family in praying for the Covel family. I am confident that Toby was met at the pearly gates by patriots who have gone before and is resting in the arms of Jesus.
• Little Texas – In 1991, we met Toby Keith just before we played a bar in Oklahoma City called Cowdaddies. We played a great round of golf with him that day and that started a friendship that lasted 33 years. We are so sad to learn of his passing, but he gave cancer a fight it’ll never forget, just as he fought through his whole career. He was a great performer, writer, American and patriot, and we’ll miss him terribly.  RIP – Toby Keith Covel. 1961-2024

• Matt Kennon – I grew up singing his songs and he just had a way of writing hit after hit throughout his career, we had the same record producer in James Stroud which was really cool to me as a new artist!  TK did things his way and thats just the way it was!  I watched this terrible disease take his life over the last few years and always hoped he’d pull on thru and get back out there in a Big Way!!  His music will live on forever Such a huge loss for Country Music and the World.  Job well done Sir! The weight on him for his last performance of “Don’t Let The Old Man In” on the American Music Awards was unthinkable and he nailed it. Most of us sing about losing others close to us, our dads, our friends, etc…To perform that song the way he did, literally fighting the old man, will go down as his best performance in my mind. • Richard Young (Kentucky Headhunters) – I met Toby for the first time when Mercury Records president Harold Shedd asked me to attend a showcase for Toby and two other acts he had just signed to the label. Toby had a great sense of humor and through the years would show up at our shows out of the blue and jump on-stage with us to sing ‘Dumas Walker!’ He just loved to surprise people and have fun. I especially remember one time in New York City, which was about as far from Oklahoma and Kentucky as you can get, we were playing the Lone Star Roadhouse. And out nowhere, here comes Toby out of the audience and jumped on-stage! I always loved the fact that he was a country act but was not afraid to add a horn section to his songs and live show. He broke a few rules but made certain things were OK for those who came after him.
• Rick Trevino – Toby Keith and I were support acts for several Sawyer Brown tours back in the day. Toby and his crew (and SB) were class acts and always treated me and my crew with kindness and respect. My prayers go out to all of Toby’s family and friends as we celebrate his life and career.
• Ricky Skaggs – I was saddened to hear of Toby Keith’s passing. He really was one of the good guys. He helped a lot of people get started in the business. He loved God, he loved his family, and he was a true Patriot–he loved America. A friend to so many, including myself! Rest dear brother, you’re home at last

• Sean Patrick McGraw – We’d stopped for fuel in one of those small towns in Montana that the railroad and the interstate have forgotten. Word had already spread that somebody famous was on one of the motorcycles. The Big Dog and a few of us went into the general store to see if they might sell us a sandwich. A little girl walked up to the man and asked him for his autograph. I pointed at him and looked at the kid, asking “Did that fella try and tell you he was Toby Keith?”  There was about a half second of terror on the precious li’l girls face before we all burst out laughing.  Toby, I hope Kirby was waiting for you at the gates of heaven making them second guess your credentials.

Joe Diffie

Country star and Grand Ole Opry member Joe Diffie has passed away at the age of 61.  This news comes two days after it was announced that he was diagnosed with COVID-19, which ultimately led to his passing.

Diffie came onto the scene in 1990, scoring a #1 hit with his debut single “Home” after first coming to Nashville as a demo singer in the 1980’s.  His first six singles reached the top 5, and he went on to have seventeen top-10 hits.  His #1 hits also included “If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets),” “Third Rock From The Sun,” “Pickup Man,” and “Bigger Than The Beatles.”  His last top-40 single, “Tougher Than Nails,” peaked at #19 on the charts in 2004.  He won an ACM Award along with George Jones for “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair” and a GRAMMY for his collaboration with Marty Stuart, “Same Old Train.”

Diffie was still actively recording and touring up until the time the country was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic and his following diagnosis, and had just recently cancelled his March 21st show in Tifton, GA.  He leaves behind a wife and five children.  His family has asked for privacy during this time.

We had the chance to meet up with Diffie in Nashville in 2013 during CMA Fest for this interview, and photographed his shows in Florida in 2009 and 2013.  He was one of the nicest artists we’ve had the pleasure of meeting and was always a must-see anytime he came into town for a gig.

Diffie’s passing is the third blow in nine days to the country music world, having lost Kenny Rogers last Friday night and Jan Howard yesterday.

The country music community is reacting to the news of Diffie’s passing with a tremendous amount of love and admiration, here is what they are saying:

• Aaron Tippin – I am in total shock and disbelief at the passing of my friend, tourmate and Country legend, Joe Diffie. My heart is broken and I’m praying for his family and for our country as we deal with this horrible pandemic. You will be missed, Joe. Rest in Peace.
• Adam Sanders – When you think of 90’s country, you think Joe Diffie. It was such an honor to have Joe included in the lineup of my 2nd annual “90’s Night” in Nashville back in March of 2018. His music will continue to impact generations to come in ways that only a few can.
• Anita Cochran – I’m so very sad to know that a friend and one of the best country singers we’ve ever had @JoeDiffieOnline has passed away from this damn corona virus. My prayers to all his friends and family. We lost a real deal today/(. RIP Joe. You will be missed!
• Anthony Smith – As many of you know the great #JoeDiffie has passed away. He was my all-time favorite country singer and I believe the best country singer to ever to set foot in Nashville. • Bill Anderson – What a sad weekend for our country music and Grand Ole Opry families with the passing of Jan Howard and now Joe Diffie. Joe was a great singer…his record of “Ships That Don’t Come In” is one of my all-time favorite performances. I always knew when I introduced him at the Opry that the fans were about to be well entertained. Joe will certainly be missed.
• Bill Engvall – Friends I am so sad to tell you my Joe Diffie has passed away. My heart is breaking, we toured together and became life long friend. I am at a loss. Please say a prayer for his family. Hopefully he is painting a water tower in heaven John Deere Green. RIP BUDDY
• Bill Engvall part 2:  Tonite I sit here with tears in my eyes as I listen to my friend Joe Diffie. I am toasting him with a Crown Royal. Why you might ask, I first met Joe on the Crown Royal Country tour. We toured together and had a lot of laughs. We also had the occasion to have some real heart to heart talks. The kind of talks where you really get to know the person. One night we were on his bus going through New York City it was just Joe and I, we talked til 4 in the morning. Joe was the kind of friend that it didn’t matter how much time had passed since the last time you saw them, the conversation picked up as if you saw them yesterday. I am so sad for his family and everyone that ever knew him. Joe always made you feel as you were the most important person in the room. While we lost a great man,the choir in heaven has gained one of the best voices around and the angels song just got a lot sweeter. I will miss you my friend but we will see each other again. RIP Joe.
• Billy Dean – I don’t really know if people realize how great a singer Joe Diffie was. We were buddies before we ever had our record deals. He had a great sense humor. He proved that to me when he recorded a funny tune I wrote called ‘Good Brown Gravy’ and invited me to sing on the record with him. Joe Diffie set the standard for our Country sound back in the 90’s. He was just a regular Joe, as he would put it, but he also will go down in history as one of the greats, I do believe.
• Billy Ray Cyrus – Beyond sadness. Beyond a loss for words. My thoughts and prayers for Joe Diffie’s family and fans.
• Brad Paisley – I’m devastated by the loss of my friend Joe Diffie. I can’t find adequate words. But the records he made, that voice, the twinkle in his eye, and our memories cannot be taken away by this disease.  Please celebrate his music today everyone, go listen again to his records.  And do EVERYTHING we need to do to defeat this virus.

• Confederate Railroad – Shocked and saddened to hear that our friend, and country music legend, Joe Diffie passed away today, Sunday, March 29 from complications of Coronavirus (COVID-19). We’ve played many shows with Joe and will miss him. Our prayers to his family, friends and fans.
• Crystal Gayle – I am so shocked and saddened that Joe has passed. So tragic. Joe was a great singer and a great songwriter and I loved his records. I always loved the shows we played together and running into Joe at the Opry. I will miss my friend.
• Darryl Worley – I knew this was bound to hit close to home. Today it did. I just heard the news of Joe Diffie’s passing. I am sick in my spirit because I can’t bear the thought of not hearing that voice for a while. He was a dear friend and he understood me and my convictions. Most of all, he accepted me for who I am and I felt the same about him. There’s no filling his shoes and he will be missed by many. I loved him like a brother and I’m thankful that I know where he is. My brother, I look forward to seeing your sweet face again. • Dave Innis (Restless Heart) – First we lose the legendary Jan Howard, and now we’ve lost Joe Diffie. It’s a heartbreaking time for Nashville and Country Music fans worldwide. Restless Heart started out in the business around the same time as Joe, and our paths crossed many times over the years. A beloved member of the Grand Ole Opry, he was also one of the sweetest people on earth! Joe’s sudden departure is a huge loss and has left all of us broken-hearted and stunned. • Heidi Newfield – There are voices that come along and catch our attention…and then there are VOICES that come along and capture our hearts forever more. We lost one of the greatest Country voices of ALL time today!!  Joe Diffie was special in every way! His vocal range was absolutely massive…. like those lungs were unreal. His tone was as rich as the OK dirt he was raised in. His heart was as warm as the comfy front lounge of his bus where he’d proudly serve up his homemade craft brews and shared stories of life, love, and the road. Joe was real, and that resonated with all of us from his peers, to family, to friends, to his millions of fans alike.  Joe made me want to be a better singer without a doubt. I’d sit on the side of the stage and wait for Ships That Don’t Come In or White Lightenin’. Anything that came out of his mouth was stylistic AND mechanically perfect. You usually don’t get to have both qualities, but Joe did.
  I’m humbled and honored to have called him my buddy and my heart breaks for his wife Tara, his beautiful kids, and big extended family as well. “One take Joe” came on in here and made us all feel special for awhile…now, he’s leading the choir of heavenly honky tonk angels! He made one hell of a mark….
• Henry Paul (BlackHawk) – Joe was a simple man with a very kind heart. His aptitude and soulful command of a Country song was unparalleled. The memories of sharing the stage with him are indelible. We all love you Joe, and our heart breaks for you and your loved ones.
• Jaida Dreyer – My heart is broken over the passing of my funny friend and champion, Joe Diffie. Just last week he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and today he is gone due to complications of the virus. I’m gutted. What is this life?
• James Robert Webb – Oklahoma lost a favorite son and the country music world lost an incredible voice yesterday. Joe Diffie and his music were the soundtrack to so many good times, it’s hard to believe he’s gone. He was a real neotraditionalist and his influence is still heard in new artists today. Everything about Joe Diffie will be missed and my heart goes out to his family, our Opry family and his many fans around the world.
• Jerry Lee Lewis – Rest in peace, Joe Diffie. Country music’s huge loss of my friend, a great singer and songwriter. May God Bless his family and friends.

I told someone a little while ago that this loss is a kick in the gut! The virus may seem like a mystery and even far away to most of us, BUT to Joe’s family it is a very real thief that has stolen their husband and father and brother or sister. But we know “the Light has shown into the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1 Its hard to be down to just words and prayers. My words and stories don’t mean much, but prayer still means everything. Let’s continue to pray for God’s mercy as we fight against this virus together. • Naomi Judd – The minute I heard “Pickup Man,” I thought, what a perfect song for him! He was a good ole boy’, all around kinda guy. He was like tv’s Tim Allen from ‘Home Improvement.’ Relatable and kind. Country music lost one of the good guys today.

• Randy Travis – Joe Diffie was the ‘pickup man’ — always had a smile and a story, to cure and encourage. It was my fortunate blessing to come along the same time JD did, in music —so many great memories, and so many times he ‘propped me up.’ The trailer that Bud Hunter hauled all across the country on our tour for years was the one we got from Joe — it had 71 on it, because that was Joe’s golf score, so Bud left it there. • Rhonda Vincent – The voices in Heaven just keep getting sweeter. So saddened to hear of the passing of Grand Ole Opry Star Joe Diffie. One of Country Music’s greatest voices. The last time I saw Joe was in a Nashville restaurant. I am honored to have sang harmony on his #bluegrass CD. A song titled “Route 5 Box 109”. Our deepest sympathy for Joe’s family. Rest In Peace Joe, you’ve made it “Home.”
• Richard Young (Kentucky Headhunters) – His album, Average Joe, was not a made up record company marketing idea. Joe was common as dirt and he never changed. He always loved it when he and the Kentucky Headhunters got to play together, he always said we made the day fun for him. Here’s to a real Country guy who could sing with the best of them. Peace, Joe.
• Ricky Skaggs – I was saddened to hear that my friend & fellow Grand Ole Opry member Joe Diffie passed away today. Joe was a great singer, songwriter, & entertainer that left his mark in Country Music. His clear voice and unique singing style made him immediately recognizable.

• Sammy Kershaw – As far as I’m concerned we lost the best voice in country music today. I have said it for years and years and years. • Suzy Bogguss – Beyond sad that our gentle talented Joe has passed on. I had a helpful cry this afternoon when I played our duet of Merle’s beautiful song “ Sing Me Back Home” . Joe and I came up at the same time singing demos in Nashville and playing out as much as possible. We both lucked out and I remember jumping for joy when he got his record deal. Lucky for all of us because he gave us so many real heartfelt country songs to keep us going even after he’s gone. RIP my dear loving friend.

• T.G. Sheppard – So tragic to hear that another great legends voice has gone silent. He was and will remain one of Country music’s great vocalist. It’s truly a sad day for our industry. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Tara and their family.
• Tanya Tucker – Sometimes I hear bad news, and over and over again in that cold empty space, I think if I wait a minute or two, the news will change, but it’s final. Joe Diffie, one of our best singers and my buddy, is gone. We are the same age, so it’s very scary. I will miss his voice, his laughter, his songs. My thoughts go out to his entire family. I’ll love you always Joe and am so grateful you were in my life.
• Taylor Hicks – Joe Diffie was a classic country artist and songwriter. His voice oozed American country tones and he will truly be missed not just in our country, but around the world too.
• Teddy Gentry (Alabama) – Joe was much more than a great country singer. He was a great song guy as well. He also knew how to put on a show. I will miss you, my friend.
• Terri Clark – The angels must have been missing some true country music, because God just brought another legend home.   That it was Covid-19 that claimed the life of Joe Diffie seems surreal, all I know is that our tremendous loss is now heaven’s gain.  Grammy winner, Opry member, one of the best singers to ever hit Nashville ,family man, good old boy and great guy. Losing Joe is heartbreaking for his family and for all of us who had the good fortune to call him friend. To say he will be missed doesn’t seem adequate, but words are starting to fail.  I hope Joe, Kenny Rogers, and Jan Howard are playing a standing cloud only show tonight. • Terry McBride – I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Joe Diffie’s passing. I was fortunate to get to know Joe and tour with him in the 90’s. I always enjoyed hearing him hit the big notes on those classic ballads. He was such a strong singer. I recently came across some old footage of us cutting up during a TV taping. He had a wicked sense of humor. This is a big loss for all of us. My condolences go out to his family and friends and all of his fans.

• Tim Rushlow – I am in shock and so sad over the passing of my long time friend, Joe Diffie. Joe and I go way back to when we both started out in this business. He IS without a doubt one of the finest country singers that has ever sung into a microphone. His pronunciation and country vibes were amazing, but he backed that up with a voice that could belt out a song like a tenor doing a duet with Pavarotti, that’s what made him truly one of the best singers I’ve ever heard.  Joe was so fun and a blast to hang with at all times and he made me laugh. I will miss my friend and salute him by cranking “Ships That Don’t Come In” till I go to sleep tonight. Rest in Heaven brother and sing one when you’re ready, they’re gonna love you!
• Toby Keith – We are feeling it now. Oklahoma boy Joe Diffie has passed away from this virus. My kids grew up around his parents. My prayers will be with his family. A great traditional voice will live on cuz I’m putting his music on now. Here’s a beer to ya, Joe. Go get your reward. -T

• Travis Tritt – I’m so sad that Joe Diffie has passed away due to complications from the Coronavirus. Joe was a good friend and touring partner with me in the 90’s. We had a lot of good times together, both onstage and offstage. This comes as a huge shock to all of us in the country music community who loved Joe and his talent. • Trisha Yearwood -I met Joe Diffie when I moved to Nashville in the mid-80’s. I started getting called to do a lot of session work, demos for publishers and writers who were pitching songs, trying to get them recorded by the A-list artists like Reba McEntire and George Strait.  It’s how I ended up meeting so many great writers, and it’s how I met other up and coming artists that were doing the same thing. It’s how I met Joe.  We’d pass each other in the halls of Sony Publishing, or run into each other at Studio 19 or County Q. More than likely if we saw each other, it was because we were singing a duet together for one of the publishers in town. I loved those sessions. Joe’s voice was always so pure and just…on. He never missed a note. Ever.  Fast forward to both of us getting recording contracts and touring the world. We ran into each other on the road too, and even did a few shows together along the way. I was always a fan, and wasn’t surprised to see him succeed in country music. His voice was always undeniable.  I saw Joe last year at an event at the Grand Ole Opry. We talked for a brief time and exchanged all the pleasantries about life, kids, and the road. We said what so many of us say… ”We should get together one of these days” and both meant it.  You never think the last time you see someone is going to be the last time you see them.  My heart is broken today for Joe’s family and friends, and for all the fans who love his music.  I will miss my friend.  Godspeed.  xoxo

• Wade Hayes – I’ve been here thinking about this since I heard the news. I cannot digest it yet. I am in disbelief and so sad I don’t even know what to say, but feel I should say something. Joe was a friend and a musical hero of mine. One of the first tours I ever went on. He was one of the best singers that ever drew a breath and always so nice to me. He will be sorely missed. This is inadequate I know but I’m sincerely stunned.
