This one hurts. We have lost a National Treasure with the passing of Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry icon Dolly Parton. Here is the announcement video by her family, and here is the official statement from her social media accounts:

Global icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton, known to the world as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.

Dolly is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years Carl Thomas Dean (1942 – 2025), her mother Avie Lee Caroline Owens (1923 – 2003), and father, Robert Lee Parton, Sr. (1921 – 2000).

A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family. Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.

At Dolly’s request, a small, private service will be held for immediate family. Dolly’s fans and friends from around the world are encouraged to pay tribute to Dolly on social media by tagging @DollyParton or by leaving a message at dollyparton.com

Brandon Rhyder – I was in Nashville almost 20 years ago when I was invited to a small ceremony award for Dolly Parton. This is verbatim and the best I remember. Porter Wagner was to introduce Dolly and talked about having her become a part of the Porter Wagner Show way back when, and that there had always been this rumor that the only reason he ever hired her was for her rack, but that was untrue. He then talked about all of the reasons he hired her from her songwriting to stage presence. Dolly was then introduced to the podium where she talked about how blessed she was and how thankful she was to be there that day. She then, in true Dolly fashion, turned to Porter and proclaimed, but Porter, you know the only reason you really hired me was for my boobs! And then she let out one of her signature giggles. The whole place erupted in laughter!!! It’s a sad day not only in country music, but all musical genres. She was the Queen of it all in every way, shape and form. God rest your soul Dolly! She sent me a handwritten card with butterflies on it, and I know exactly where that card is in my house. I made a point to keep it forever, and I always will. She was so witty and could make you laugh, and then turn around and break your heart with a song. She was a songwriter and a country music woman through and through. Jimmy Wayne – post 1 – On June 4, 2014 I received a letter from Dolly. It was about my book Walk To Beautiful. Jenifer, the lady she mentions in the letter, is her backup singer. Jenifer attends Ken Abraham‘s Life notes class at Christ Church. That’s where she heard about the book and then shared a copy with Dolly. I was so incredibly excited when I received the letter. You can only imagine. I got a little laugh when I read the line about, “maybe one day we’ll meet.” I’m sure Dolly has met millions of people and I certainly do not expect her to remember the night. I opened the front door at the hibachi restaurant in Brentwood Tennessee and she was reaching for the door from the inside of the restaurant. We nearly ran into one another. I said, “Dolly!” she laughed and said something like, “Yep, that’s me.” I took her hand and kissed the back of it and said, “it’s so good seeing you again.” I had seen her once backstage at one of those musical award shows. Anyway, she sure was a nice lady and I was glad to meet her – a few times.
Jimmy Wayne – post 2 – Several years ago, a man who dealt in estate sales called me and said, “I have something you might be interested in.” A few days later, he showed up at my home carrying a vanilla-colored folder filled with papers. I remember looking at it and thinking, What in the world is this? He explained that Ira, Dolly Parton’s longtime personal assistant, had kept many of the Post-it notes, memos, and handwritten notes Dolly had written over the years. After Ira passed away, a family member sold her house. The instructions to the realtor were essentially, “Just sell everything.” That’s how this folder ended up with the man who eventually called me. As I began thumbing through the stack, I realized what I was holding. These are handwritten notes by #DollyParton. Some were simple reminders. Some were notes to other people. Nothing about them was intended for the public. They were simply pieces of everyday life – written in Dolly’s own handwriting. There were also photographs and negatives. Attached to some of them was a Post-it note in Dolly’s handwriting that read: “Don’t ever use these pics. Destroy neg.” That stopped me in my tracks. It made me realize just how personal some of what I was holding really was. And that’s what made these things so special to me. They offered a small, personal glimpse of Dolly away from the stage, the cameras, and the public eye. And what struck me most was how much the person on those little pieces of paper seemed to resemble the Dolly we’ve all come to know and love: warm, down-to-earth, thoughtful, and very real. People may wonder why I purchased them – and then ask, Why didn’t you return them to Dolly? The answer is simple. First, I reached out to someone close to Dolly in an effort to get them back to her, but I never received a return call. Second, I didn’t want them to end up in the hands of someone who might exploit something so personal. I honestly don’t know what the future holds for these pieces of Dolly’s life. For now, I feel a responsibility to keep them safe and protect them. Maybe someday I’ll pass them along to someone I trust to appreciate what they are and care for them in the same way. Dolly Parton gave so much of herself to the world through her music, her kindness, her generosity, and the way she treated people. Today, I’m simply grateful that, for a brief moment, I was able to hold a few quiet pieces of the person behind the legend. Rest peacefully, Dolly.

I got to meet Dolly a few times throughout my career but most memorably was Dolly “oohed and ahhhed” over the ring and just complimented Jennifer and me on it and made Jennifer feel so special that night. Kaitlin Butts – When I heard the news, I was on a pontoon on Lake Morey before my show in VT. I blurted out the headline without control to my band and it just got quiet. Then, my fiddle player said “well, that just ruined my pontoon ride.” Our boat driver then informed us that Dolly had previously ridden in the exact pontoon that we were currently on. I gotta say, that might have been the only correct way to have been delivered that news, on the Previously Ridden Dolly Parton Pontoon. Dolly means so much to me as a girl, learning how to be bold and shine without fear. As a performer, she was the example of what it looks like to be unapologetically, authentically yourself. She could guide a crowd through laughs, tears, and her art of storytelling. As a businesswoman, she claimed her leadership with grace, stood up for herself when it mattered, and used her privilege for good. As a believer, I believe she walked the way that I believe Jesus told us to, being an advocate for compassion, loving for your neighbor, and consistently investing in people and communities around her. As a woman, she was boldly feminine and gentle but with a smoking gun on her hip of quick-witted, jaw-dropping, one-liners that would send an audience into a roar of laughter. I’ve studied her my entire life in every aspect and phase of growing up as a performer myself. I have, in many big business decisions, asked myself what Dolly would do. I have loved her depth, lightness, deep sense of self, and purpose. I have always aimed to treat the position that I have been put in with care, the same way she did, and hope to be more and more like her every day. But then she’d probably say something like “you should be like you”. And maybe that’s true, but I’ve already booked a boob job appointment just in case. I will always love you, Dolly.
KC of KC and the Sunshine Band – I am in shock. I met Dolly back in the late ’70s. We had the same manager, and I was lucky enough to meet her and know her throughout the years, and then we ended up with the same management team again years later. She was one of the sweetest and kindest people I had ever met. I have many fond memories that I will cherish and hold close to my heart. Such a talent and a tremendous loss to pop and country music and to those who knew and loved her. She will truly be missed.
Kelly Clarkson – Dolly Parton had a way of making everyone feel special, and seen, and welcomed, and as if you were old friends. I will miss her heart and her voice as I am sure millions will. What an incredible gift and talent she was and still is with an amazing catalogue of art she has left behind for all of us.
Kid Rock – Quite simply The G.O.A.T Thanks for the songs, the laughs, the humility and grace. Without a doubt a woman who God truly has his hands on. Rock on Dolly, baby rock on.
Kimberly Schlapman – Oh, how the world is a better place because of her! I am feeling all sorts of emotions about the news of Dolly. Like so many others, she was such an inspiration to me. Yes, musically, but also in the way she lived and loved. Dolly, we will always love you!
Kristen Chenoweth – Like the rest of the world, I’m immediately heartbroken. I met Dolly on several occasions and she always made me feel like one of her own. She even agreed to sing with me on one of my records. My ultimate inspiration. The world has lost one of the best but I know we will never forget her because she is impossible to forget. I love you Dolly and I will ALWAYS love you.
Kristian Bush – Dolly.. She mattered more than maps. Every time that I would answer the question, “Where are you from?” I would answer shyly “Sevierville, Tennessee”. The looks I would get back were confused and sometimes concerned, until I tried again for them saying, “Dollywood?”. At that point almost everyone would know exactly where I was from. Growing up in that town, it became clear that most people never really left. It always felt like opportunity wasn’t as accessible to most folks who lived there the way it was just a few towns over. That, combined with the idyllic setting of the oldest mountains in America, and families that were already 4 or 5 generations deep into their homesteads, made for a weird reality. It seemed that the only way to leave that town was to be a football player that might play for UT or be Dolly Parton. Funny enough, I picked her dream. As a right of passage in my hometown, we would dare each other to steal a road sign. I finally did it one day. I am sure I still carry my guilt about the county official that had to begrudgingly put the replacement sign back up near the high school ever time some dumbass over hormoned teenager like me would take the one before. It sits in my studio in Atlanta on my wall now where I can see it when I make things. When I am dreaming of impossible ambitions, trying to shake off the weight of the music business, or wondering if my career is over or just beginning, I see that sign. I think to myself she knows, she knew, she had the information and the answers. Someone from the square mile I am from, saw those mountains and climbed them and never gave up on herself, her music, or her hometown. Dolly, I’m sorry we never got to sit down and talk about this. I always thought there was plenty of time up ahead for us to do that. I was wrong. So, as a first prayer, feel free to come see me in my dreams while I sleep. When she came in to sing with me on Timeless she raised the bar so high with her vocal that I had to go back in the vocal booth and re-sing my part. Just so I could try and match her emotion and the little signature Dolly licks she did. I will never forget spending that day with her. At the CMA Awards a few years ago when so many of us women in country music got to sing together to open the show, I remember thinking “I get to stand next to Dolly!”. And this 3rd picture is when my daughter Emma asked me if she could have a picture with Dolly. She was actually in her car leaving the building and I waved the car down (seems kinda crazy now but you know how you will do most anything for your kid). Not only did she stop but she got out of the car and took a picture with us and she could not have been more gracious. She was a lesson for all of us in how to be kind, loving, accepting, adventurous, professional, and to always have faith. And a sense of humor! I’ve seen so many clips today and how blessed are we to have them? We all loved her…the whole world loved her. And we will all always love her.
Marty Stuart – I called her SIS…..and, I’m going to miss her. She was just one big ole heart full of love. A beacon of pure light. A well of goodness. A once in a lifetime character the likes this world will never see again. That’s Dolly Rebecca…..

And since songwriting has always been where my heart was I had an intense respect for her for that. So I guess I’ll join the world today in shedding a tear. Go rest high Dolly. Miley Cyrus – The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share. Our most sacred moments were private and they’ll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts. What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong. I have an angel by my side. I always have. Pam Tillis – Since I was a little girl, Dolly set the bar. Always the smartest, most talented, glamorous, generous, luminous person in the room. I’m sure she’d laugh that off… she never seemed to take herself or things too seriously, except when it came to her art, her charity and philanthropy, and letting people know in no uncertain terms who she gave thanks to for her gifts. God infused, God inspired, God propelled. To hear her sing live in a room without a microphone was to have the hair stand up on the back of your neck. I had the thrill of that at my home, and well, I’ll say it again: God’s E.Q. She never forgot where she came from; she just was an endless well of creativity. I sat in a parking lot a couple of years back and played my sister “Down from Dover,” which she had somehow missed growing up. We sat there in the car and bawled. I just could go on and on. There’s a Dolly-shaped hole in so many hearts today, mine included. Her work here was done. She’s gone home.

Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel) – I just learned of the passing of my dear friend Dolly Parton.  Besides her incredible voice and songwriting, her philanthropic work providing education literacy and access to books for children, supporting her community in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, she has been a beacon of hope for so many! I was lucky enough to work with her in a movie we did called “Wild Texas Wind” as well as write some songs and got to do numerous recordings. She helped me and the band at a time when we really needed it. I’ll never forget the phone call while we were doing the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and on the other end was Dolly herself asking us to do this movie with her. Working with Dolly was one of the high points of my life and career. She taught me so much and was there for me anytime I needed her and I made sure I did the same. We should all strive to be Dolly in our lives, her kindness, generosity, humor and music made the world a better place. It’s hard to imagine life without her. I will always love you Dolly!!

Rory Feek – Near the end of 2015, just before Joey passed away, Dolly Parton sent a beautiful video to Joey, encouraging her and telling her that she loved her. Gathered around Joey’s bed with her family that night, with tears in all of our eyes, we watched it with Joey for the first time. Dolly didn’t have to take the time out of your busy schedule to make the video, or to go through the lengths it took to get it to Joey,… but she did. And our family will be forever grateful. We are remembering her and thinking of her family tonight and during this difficult time for them.

Scotty McCreery – Meeting Dolly on the Red Carpet at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas in 2016 was a bucket-list moment for me. No one had ever made me speechless until I met her. She was so gracious, and in the middle of all the craziness that happens on the carpet with her people moving her around and my team moving me around, I’ll still never forget how she made me feel at that moment…like I was the only person she wanted to talk with. I even posted our photo on social media saying “I guarantee my night is better than yours because tonight I met Dolly.”

She was one of the greatest to ever do it, with a gift for making everyone around her feel special. Her music, her heart, her faith, her generosity, and the light she brought into this world will live on forever.

Shawna Thompson (Thompson Square) – We never had the chance to actually meet Dolly Parton, but we did stand about 10 feet away from her at an event in Nashville very early on in our Thompson Square career. I was so shy, and I wish now that I would have said something to her, but what do you say to such an ICON? Just being in her presence in that room was electric. What a beacon of light she was. Several years later, when it came time for me to design my honky tonk album cover, I wanted it to exude my upbringing and my love of real country music. Dolly’s style and Manuel’s clothing designs were the first things that popped into my head. She was the greatest guide for everything in this business. She truly had it all: talent, looks, business smarts, and loads of personality. We are so lucky to have had her as a beacon and to have been on this planet, breathing the same air as Dolly Parton. Ward Davis – I don’t say much when celebrities die. For the most part “they’re people just like me,” as the saying goes, and I figure it’s for the folks who knew them to speak on their passing. But Dolly? My Lord, she wasn’t “people just like me.” Or like any of us. We won’t ever know all the good that woman brought to this earth. Only what she wanted us to know, or what couldn’t be hidden. I think we can all safely assume that Dolly’s fortune will bestow upon the world generations of good deeds, and help children and families and communities for years to come, all the while leaving us with the sound of her precious voice, and all those wonderful songs, and lessons she gave us throughout the time we shared this world with her. And what an honor it should be for us all, that we got to live in the time of Dolly. And her boobs. Can you name a more famous pair?. Exactly. And that’s the way she wanted it. She turned our heads to where they couldn’t turn away, and while we were looking, she showed us ALL how to be good humans. What a gift she was. God, bless and rest her soul. Amen
