This one hurts.  We have lost a National Treasure with the passing of Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry icon Dolly Parton.  Here is the announcement video by her family, and here is the official statement from her social media accounts:

Global icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton, known to the world as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.

Dolly is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years Carl Thomas Dean (1942 – 2025), her mother Avie Lee Caroline Owens (1923 – 2003), and father, Robert Lee Parton, Sr. (1921 – 2000).

A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family. Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.

At Dolly’s request, a small, private service will be held for immediate family. Dolly’s fans and friends from around the world are encouraged to pay tribute to Dolly on social media by tagging @DollyParton or by leaving a message at http://dollyparton.com

  We never got to sing together, but I believe we will one day. I’m gonna sing her “favorite line on the whole CD” (from my song Hank’s Cadillac) just for Dolly at the Opry next week. I hope she swings by and helps me push out those high notes.

He then talked about all of the reasons he hired her from her songwriting to stage presence. Dolly was then introduced to the podium where she talked about how blessed she was and how thankful she was to be there that day. She then, in true Dolly fashion, turned to Porter and proclaimed, but Porter, you know the only reason you really hired me was for my boobs! And then she let out one of her signature giggles. Her Christmas album with Kenny Rogers really showed me what my voice was capable of,and shaped who I became,with the lyrics “I believe I am so therefore I should do all that I can,to be a better piece in the puzzle of Gods plan”. Her songs were life lines,and I could go on and on,like I’m sure so many of you can too. We crossed paths but never officially met,when I did my first CMA Fanfest signing,we were in the same hall, and by pure coincidence we have the same dentist and frequented the same neighborhood Mexican restaurant. I never bothered her though,rather I kept her on the pedestal I reserved for her. It wasn’t just her music though, it was her spirit,and her heart,and all the good she did. By example she taught me to work hard,stay humble,that family is everything,and never stop believing. To follow your heart and when things don’t work out,trust your path. The way she carried herself in the business actually inspired one of my lyrics “I say that you can look,but you better not touch”. No there will never be another. She sent me a handwritten card with butterflies on it, and I know exactly where that card is in my house. I made a point to keep it forever, and I always will.  And crazy enough, Baylah (my 5 year old) just recently asked me, “Mom, when am I gonna get to meet Dolly Parton?” I told her, “Hmmm I’m not sure.” There was just nobody like her. She was so witty and could make you laugh, and then turn around and break your heart with a song. She was a songwriter and a country music woman through and through. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen someone so dedicated to this music and to what it means. She gave so much to country music, but I’ll always be especially grateful for the little bit of kindness and encouragement she gave to me. A true treasure who will be missed.

I had the honor of singing with her a couple of years ago and later working with her on her children’s book. I will never forget watching her sit and read to my children, sharing that same warmth and magic with them. Knowing they had that moment with her is something I will cherish forever. • Jimmy Wayne – post 1 – On June 4, 2014 I received a letter from Dolly. It was about my book Walk To Beautiful.  Jenifer, the lady she mentions in the letter, is her backup singer. Jenifer attends Ken Abraham‘s Life notes class at Christ Church. That’s where she heard about the book and then shared a copy with Dolly.  I was so incredibly excited when I received the letter. You can only imagine.  I got a little laugh when I read the line about, “maybe one day we’ll meet.” I’m sure Dolly has met millions of people and I certainly do not expect her to remember the night. I opened the front door at the hibachi restaurant in Brentwood Tennessee and she was reaching for the door from the inside of the restaurant. We nearly ran into one another. I said, “Dolly!” she laughed and said something like, “Yep, that’s me.” I took her hand and kissed the back of it and said, “it’s so good seeing you again.” I had seen her once backstage at one of those musical award shows.  Anyway, she sure was a nice lady and I was glad to meet her – a few times.
• Jimmy Wayne – post 2 – Several years ago, a man who dealt in estate sales called me and said, “I have something you might be interested in.”  A few days later, he showed up at my home carrying a vanilla-colored folder filled with papers. I remember looking at it and thinking, What in the world is this?  He explained that Ira, Dolly Parton’s longtime personal assistant, had kept many of the Post-it notes, memos, and handwritten notes Dolly had written over the years.  After Ira passed away, a family member sold her house. The instructions to the realtor were essentially, “Just sell everything.”  That’s how this folder ended up with the man who eventually called me.  As I began thumbing through the stack, I realized what I was holding.  These are handwritten notes by #DollyParton.  Some were simple reminders. Some were notes to other people. Nothing about them was intended for the public. They were simply pieces of everyday life – written in Dolly’s own handwriting.  There were also photographs and negatives. Attached to some of them was a Post-it note in Dolly’s handwriting that read:  “Don’t ever use these pics. Destroy neg.”  That stopped me in my tracks.  It made me realize just how personal some of what I was holding really was.  And that’s what made these things so special to me. They offered a small, personal glimpse of Dolly away from the stage, the cameras, and the public eye. And what struck me most was how much the person on those little pieces of paper seemed to resemble the Dolly we’ve all come to know and love: warm, down-to-earth, thoughtful, and very real.  People may wonder why I purchased them – and then ask, Why didn’t you return them to Dolly?  The answer is simple.  First, I reached out to someone close to Dolly in an effort to get them back to her, but I never received a return call.  Second, I didn’t want them to end up in the hands of someone who might exploit something so personal.  I honestly don’t know what the future holds for these pieces of Dolly’s life. For now, I feel a responsibility to keep them safe and protect them. Maybe someday I’ll pass them along to someone I trust to appreciate what they are and care for them in the same way.  Dolly Parton gave so much of herself to the world through her music, her kindness, her generosity, and the way she treated people.  Today, I’m simply grateful that, for a brief moment, I was able to hold a few quiet pieces of the person behind the legend.  Rest peacefully, Dolly.

My parents had your records, and I would listen to them endlessly.  You’ve made a way for so many of us. Thank you for that! You were always the brightest light in the room. She had a way of making everyone feel good about themselves, while in the presence of her true greatness. I grew up not only hearing her songs on the radio and seeing her on TV, but hearing stories about her rise to fame from my own family members in Pigeon Forge, TN. My grandmother was Grace Parton raised in Sevier County, TN. My side of the Parton family were raised as hard working God fearing people, just like Dolly’s side of the Partons. And they still are today. Thankful for all of them. Many of my best memories were spent in the great smoky mountains visiting my grandmother Grace, uncle Jim in Pigeon Forge, and my cousin’s deli (Parton’s Deli) in Gatlinburg. As a kid, it was always a bit of magic to know that I was a distant cousin to the beautiful big star that sang and starred in “9 to 5”. I never got the chance to meet her, but I always felt like I knew her. God speed Dolly Parton.

• Kaitlin Butts – When I heard the news, I was on a pontoon on Lake Morey before my show in VT. I blurted out the headline without control to my band and it just got quiet. Then, my fiddle player said “well, that just ruined my pontoon ride.” Our boat driver then informed us that Dolly had previously ridden in the exact pontoon that we were currently on. I gotta say, that might have been the only correct way to have been delivered that news, on the Previously Ridden Dolly Parton Pontoon. Dolly means so much to me as a girl, learning how to be bold and shine without fear. As a performer, she was the example of what it looks like to be unapologetically, authentically yourself. She could guide a crowd through laughs, tears, and her art of storytelling. As a businesswoman, she claimed her leadership with grace, stood up for herself when it mattered, and used her privilege for good. As a believer, I believe she walked the way that I believe Jesus told us to, being an advocate for compassion, loving for your neighbor, and consistently investing in people and communities around her. As a woman, she was boldly feminine and gentle but with a smoking gun on her hip of quick-witted, jaw-dropping, one-liners that would send an audience into a roar of laughter. I’ve studied her my entire life in every aspect and phase of growing up as a performer myself. I have, in many big business decisions, asked myself what Dolly would do. I have loved her depth, lightness, deep sense of self, and purpose. I have always aimed to treat the position that I have been put in with care, the same way she did, and hope to be more and more like her every day. But then she’d probably say something like “you should be like you”. And maybe that’s true, but I’ve already booked a boob job appointment just in case. I will always love you, Dolly.
• KC of KC and the Sunshine Band – I am in shock. I met Dolly back in the late ’70s. We had the same manager, and I was lucky enough to meet her and know her throughout the years, and then we ended up with the same management team again years later. She was one of the sweetest and kindest people I had ever met. I have many fond memories that I will cherish and hold close to my heart. Such a talent and a tremendous loss to pop and country music and to those who knew and loved her. She will truly be missed.

• Kristian Bush – Dolly.. She mattered more than maps. Every time that I would answer the question, “Where are you from?” I would answer shyly “Sevierville, Tennessee”. The looks I would get back were confused and sometimes concerned, until I tried again for them saying, “Dollywood?”. At that point almost everyone would know exactly where I was from.  Growing up in that town, it became clear that most people never really left. It always felt like opportunity wasn’t as accessible to most folks who lived there the way it was just a few towns over. That, combined with the idyllic setting of the oldest mountains in America, and families that were already 4 or 5 generations deep into their homesteads, made for a weird reality. It seemed that the only way to leave that town was to be a football player that might play for UT or be Dolly Parton. Funny enough, I picked her dream.  As a right of passage in my hometown, we would dare each other to steal a road sign. I finally did it one day. I am sure I still carry my guilt about the county official that had to begrudgingly put the replacement sign back up near the high school ever time some dumbass over hormoned teenager like me would take the one before.  It sits in my studio in Atlanta on my wall now where I can see it when I make things. When I am dreaming of impossible ambitions, trying to shake off the weight of the music business, or wondering if my career is over or just beginning, I see that sign. I think to myself she knows, she knew, she had the information and the answers. Someone from the square mile I am from, saw those mountains and climbed them and never gave up on herself, her music, or her hometown.  Dolly, I’m sorry we never got to sit down and talk about this. I always thought there was plenty of time up ahead for us to do that. I was wrong. So, as a first prayer, feel free to come see me in my dreams while I sleep. At the CMA Awards a few years ago when so many of us women in country music got to sing together to open the show, I remember thinking “I get to stand next to Dolly!”. And this 3rd picture is when my daughter Emma asked me if she could have a picture with Dolly. She was actually in her car leaving the building and I waved the car down (seems kinda crazy now but you know how you will do most anything for your kid). Not only did she stop but she got out of the car and took a picture with us and she could not have been more gracious. She was a lesson for all of us in how to be kind, loving, accepting, adventurous, professional, and to always have faith. And a sense of humor! I’ve seen so many clips today and how blessed are we to have them? We all loved her…the whole world loved her. And we will all always love her.

• Randy Owen – My admiration for Dolly is as high as it can go. She was a one-of-a-kind entertainer. She did it all and did it great! I thank God for Dolly Parton.

You had a way of making everyone around you feel most important. • Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel) – I just learned of the passing of my dear friend Dolly Parton.

Besides her incredible voice and songwriting, her philanthropic work providing education literacy and access to books for children, supporting her community in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, she has been a beacon of hope for so many!  I was lucky enough to work with her in a movie we did called “Wild Texas Wind” as well as write some songs and got to do numerous recordings. She helped me and the band at a time when we really needed it. I’ll never forget the phone call while we were doing the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and on the other end was Dolly herself asking us to do this movie with her. Working with Dolly was one of the high points of my life and career. She taught me so much and was there for me anytime I needed her and I made sure I did the same.  We should all strive to be Dolly in our lives, her kindness, generosity, humor and music made the world a better place.  It’s hard to imagine life without her. I will always love you Dolly!!
• Ray Scott – Not Dolly.. . rip..  I’ve been fortunate enough to meet Dolly and be around her on a few occasions over my 33 years in Nashville.. The first time I ever saw her, I was working as a furniture delivery guy (my first job in town) in Brentwood… A little lady walked in and was browsing a little.. I didn’t recognize her right away. She wasn’t wearing a wig.. Her makeup was minimal.. She wasn’t her usual larger than life self, but she was extremely sweet, and the smile was unmistakable… I shared a few pleasantries with her and tried not to look as goofily excited as I truly was.. It was the first time i got to meet one of my heroes, and it’ll always be my fondest memory of that.. May that angel rest in peace… The world lost one of it’s most beloved and wonderful humans.
• Ray Stevens – I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of the one and only Dolly. She was a one of a kind and I’ve known her since she first came to town in 1965 and Fred Foster had me produce her first records. What talent!!!
• Reba McEntire – Well, I just got the news that my buddy Dolly passed onto the higher and greater side. Dolly, thank you for all the wonderful things you did for us here on earth. Your love, your music and you gave so much with your huge huge heart. There will never ever be another you. We will remember and cherish every memory and every note you ever played and sang. Dolly was born to shine her light in the darkness, and today she woke up in that magnificent light that she was given to shine in this world. There has never been any one like her in our lifetime, but good seed brings forth good fruit. • Ronnie McDowell – When I heard the news today, Dolly had passed It hit me hard, sad sad day. I remember when she called me and asked me to be on a new song she had written called I dreamed about Elvis. I was honored as you can imagine. She told me one day that she was gonna do something special with that song , her and her husband were Elvis fans. She said she had dreamed about Elvis for two years and he was lying under a street light bathed in blue and he kept looking at her saying indigo blue, indigo blue. I told her that was a color, but it also had a deep meaning , she was the sweetest , funniest , kindest and generous persons I have ever known .I dreamed about Elvis wound up on her biggest selling album of all time , her rockstar album. I got my gold album not long ago. I’m more than proud than you can imagine to be a part of her legacy . Dolly me and the world will miss you. Love you.
• Ronnie Milsap – I first met Dolly backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. I was a big admirer of her and her work, we both were recording for RCA at the time. She had a great (or wicked) sense of humor and asked me if I wanted to touch her chest to see if they were real! I knew better! That broke the ice and I have enjoyed all our times together ever since. Her amazing writing and choice of music have always captivated me, and I have loved and appreciated her many roles in the music business, but mostly her entrepreneurship! We’ve lost the biggest heart and the biggest real star in the entertainment world.  She always called me her blind date.  I love and miss Dolly!
• Rory Feek – Near the end of 2015, just before Joey passed away, Dolly Parton sent a beautiful video to Joey, encouraging her and telling her that she loved her. Gathered around Joey’s bed with her family that night, with tears in all of our eyes, we watched it with Joey for the first time.  Dolly didn’t have to take the time out of your busy schedule to make the video, or to go through the lengths it took to get it to Joey,… but she did. And our family will be forever grateful.  We are remembering her and thinking of her family tonight and during this difficult time for them.
• Sammy Kershaw – Heartbroken, and I love her. I am absolutely going to miss her. She was always so sweet to me. God bless her. Heaven has added a great one today.

• Sawyer Brown – It would be impossible to express just how heartbroken we are to hear that Dolly Parton passed away. She was, and always will be, an absolute treasure. She sent so much love and so much joy into the world—and the world is a better place because of it. Our tears are tempered by the joy of knowing that she has heard her Savior say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Welcome home.” We love you, Dolly!
• Scotty McCreery – Meeting Dolly on the Red Carpet at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas in 2016 was a bucket-list moment for me. No one had ever made me speechless until I met her. She was so gracious, and in the middle of all the craziness that happens on the carpet with her people moving her around and my team moving me around, I’ll still never forget how she made me feel at that moment…like I was the only person she wanted to talk with. I even posted our photo on social media saying “I guarantee my night is better than yours because tonight I met Dolly.”  She was one of the greatest to ever do it, with a gift for making everyone around her feel special. Her music, her heart, her faith, her generosity, and the light she brought into this world will live on forever.  Praying for her family and everyone who loved her.
• Shaboozey – Rest in peace Dolly Parton, I wish I had the honor of meeting you. You were everyone’s favorite artist. Thank you for giving us some of the greatest music we’ll ever know.
• Shania Twain – Dolly was pure light sent from heaven. My mentor is gone. My songwriting teacher and hero of grace and humility. There is a hole in my heart but the joy of just the thought of her smile will continue to fill me with inspiration for as long as I live. I will cherish this moment performing Coat Of Many Colors with Dolly forever. Goodbye Dolly. Rest in peace, beautiful angel.
• Shawna Thompson (Thompson Square) – We never had the chance to actually meet Dolly Parton, but we did stand about 10 feet away from her at an event in Nashville very early on in our Thompson Square career. I was so shy, and I wish now that I would have said something to her, but what do you say to such an ICON?  Just being in her presence in that room was electric. What a beacon of light she was.  Several years later, when it came time for me to design my honky tonk album cover, I wanted it to exude my upbringing and my love of real country music. Dolly’s style and Manuel’s clothing designs were the first things that popped into my head.  She was the greatest guide for everything in this business. She truly had it all: talent, looks, business smarts, and loads of personality.  We are so lucky to have had her as a beacon and to have been on this planet, breathing the same air as Dolly Parton.  Shawna xoxo

She was an incredible story teller musically and in real life. But she was also a loving and compassionate human being, led by goodness in all she did. My mother loves her, and as a child, remember listening to her angelic voice come through the speakers of my mom’s Oldsmobile Delta 88. Her song “9 to 5” was the first song I sung publicly at age 17 for my high school talent show. I don’t really have all the words yet, but I know a world without Dolly is gonna take some getting used to. I’m crushed to put it lightly…no one will ever even come close. We will always love you, Miss Dolly. Thank you. For everything.

• T. Graham Brown – The sweet, kind, and incomparable Dolly has passed on to rest in the arms of her Jesus. It would take volumes to list her many accomplishments. Some of my favorite memories are being on the road with her and Kenny Rogers. She always lit up the stage, and everyone in attendance was thrilled and delighted by her performance. She will forever live on in our hearts. We will always love you. Rest in peace, sister.
• Terri Clark – We just lost our matriarch. She was so much more than an entertainer. She swung the pendulum toward the light in times of darkness. She gave back so much more than she ever took and used her name and influence for the greater good. THAT’S WHY the song “What Would Dolly Do” was written and loved.
  The world almost feels off its axis right now, and how we exist in it without her remains to be seen.

  She taught us so much through her heart and her actions and left behind a legacy of love and light. Now she is in that light with her loved ones and her God.

  Thank you, Dolly, for inspiration beyond music. Humanity is better because of you.
• TG Sheppard – There are no words to describe the sadness that I am feeling hearing that Dolly has died today. We were dear friends from the Pigeon Forge days to touring together and at every instance she was a total pro and a class act.

Dolly showed us the difference.  She gave country music generations of memories, but what she did off the stage may have said even more about who she was. She was the blueprint, head and shoulders above anyone that came before her and all those of us that have come after. • Tim Rushlow – Dolly was one-of-a-kind from every direction. A treasure that will be sorely missed. She was always so gracious and kind to me every time I was around her. She was always a giver and gave her time, money, and all her resources to all walks of life. Being a part of her telethon for her hometown area in the Smoky Mountains after the fires will always be a highlight! Perfect example of how she always showed up when it mattered. Rest high, Ms. Parton.
• Trace Adkins – It is indeed rare for the world, collectively, to express sorrow for someone’s passing. I knew her to be the angel that they think she was, and I’ll miss her. Dolly, I’ll always love you.
• Trisha Yearwood – There aren’t words to describe what you mean to the world, Dolly. What I do know is that you have always been a light, and now you are shining brighter than we can imagine. Our job now is to keep that light alive. WWDD? Love one another. You walked the walk. To say your energy in this life will be missed is an understatement. We will always love you.
• Ty Herndon – Thanks to the team at NewsNation for inviting me on tonight to pay tribute to the irreplaceable Dolly Parton — an angel who walked among us. Our hearts are broken, but She’s An Eagle When She Flies! We’ll see you on the other side, sweet Dolly.

• Wade Bowen – I recorded this for my Christmas album. Dolly was an amazing songwriter obviously and she wrote one of my favorite Christmas songs ever. She sent me this after listening to the mix. I was beyond blown away. A true class act and no way there will ever be another. She did it all. Even the little things. Even for some artist she had never heard of or knew anything about. She took the time for everyone and everything. She was a bad ass. Rest easy
• Ward Davis – I don’t say much when celebrities die. For the most part “they’re people just like me,” as the saying goes, and I figure it’s for the folks who knew them to speak on their passing.  But Dolly? My Lord, she wasn’t “people just like me.” Or like any of us. We won’t ever know all the good that woman brought to this earth. Only what she wanted us to know, or what couldn’t be hidden. I think we can all safely assume that Dolly’s fortune will bestow upon the world generations of good deeds, and help children and families and communities for years to come, all the while leaving us with the sound of her precious voice, and all those wonderful songs, and lessons she gave us throughout the time we shared this world with her. And what an honor it should be for us all, that we got to live in the time of Dolly.  And her boobs. Can you name a more famous pair?. Exactly. And that’s the way she wanted it. She turned our heads to where they couldn’t turn away, and while we were looking, she showed us ALL how to be good humans. What a gift she was.  God, bless and rest her soul. Amen
• William Lee Golden (Oak Ridge Boys) – The Oak Ridge Boys were guests on The Porter Wagoner Show in Nashville when we first met Dolly Parton. With a voice like an angel and that special light about her, she captured our hearts from the very beginning. We treasured the many times we were blessed to share stages with her through the years. Today, I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of her passing. The last time I remember feeling this stunned was when Elvis Presley passed away. Rest in peace, Dolly, until we sing with you in harmony again. Your songs, your voice, and your light of love will live and shine in our hearts forever.
